Got a rotary hammer for concrete, so this is just a regular wood drill for me. Giving up my 996 to my wife's business. Just found the 999 on sale on Amazon. Thanks for the video. Done!
I just bought the 999 kit. Honestly for most people it doesn't make sense to buy the bare tool if you have the extra $100. Home Depot has the bare tool for $179 and the kit for $279 with 6amp charger and 6Ah battery. That battery alone is about $140 and the charger isn't cheap either. These tools are designed to work really well with the battery that is included.
I say it is the same drill since only Lowes have the Detect , Home depot ask Dewalt to make them a drill with the same functions. So Dewalt took the same drill and just gave it a different name for Home Depot. That why Dewalt didn't make a big deal about the Advantage line.
That's possible. My only argument against that is that the power detect drill has some sort of programming or hardware that allows it to get a boost from the high output batteries that they have in the XR line. If you're using batteries with 18650 cells, it acts the same as a normal XR. If it has the 21700 cells it can utilize them better.
I think that this was an excellent test and an excellent video- as usual on this channel. However, for those who are unaware, there are drills that some people call right angle drills or stud and joist drills that are designed for running very large bits. Great big machines, easy to identify. Dewalt’s newer stud and joist drill will handle pretty much any wood boring bit easily. Including 6 1/4” holes saws. That being said any of the newer stud and joist drills will handle very large bits fairly easily- that’s what they’re made for.
Talk about MAXIMUM EFFORT!!! Nice job! Looks like the drills weren't the only ones getting a workout on this one🙌 Really appreciate the dedication to torture test these new tools for us👍

But bottom line the power detect has that extra something that the flexvolt advantage doesn't. The test were timed in these videos and the proof is there. I feel if the claim by DeWalt flexvolt advantage has more power even though you use a 18650 cell battery it still should beat the power detect
9ah FV has 21700s and FA drill with 9ah FV is best performance combo possible from dewalt. Most channels test it with 6ah FV which makes sense, but those have 18650s and suck, thus the underperforming...

I’ve never had a problem with any of my DeWalt tools. I did have to change the brushes on one, years ago. Never had noticeable chuck wobble. The new Detect tools REQUIRE the new 8 amp detect battery to get the extra power. I agree with that, having tested my new 998 against my older 996. With the 6 amp battery, they’re about the same. But with the new 8 amp battery, the 998 is very noticeably more powerful, though the 996 is not. The new battery has newer cells that can deliver more power, while the other batteries, with the older cells can’t. They would drastically overheat. The new detect tools sense these new batteries, and allow that extra power to be used. The older drills don’t, and so can’t use it. So it’s important to note that if you buy a bare Detect tool, without that new battery, you won’t get a power and efficiency advantage over the older tool. There is no advantage to using the 9 amp Flexvolt battery in these Detect tools, as it just adds run time, but not higher power draw. As far as I’m aware, no other manufacturer, at this time is using these new batteries.
"With the 6 amp battery, they’re about the same. Excellent video! I personally would get the flexvolt advantage since I already have the batteries but my old 996 hasn't let me down and I LOVE the made in USA sticker. Just a tip, those are locking chucks. Ratchet them tight and turn them backwards one click.
Just got the 999 last week , it's a beast , just wondering I was told to tighten the chuck then click back one click when loading bits , it makes a different sound when you click back , I was told it locks the chuck , do you know anything about the chuck locking down on the bits in the 999 ? Maybe try it if you are not aware
Outstanding Brian! But you’re wrong? I saw three beasts in this video; both of the drills and the operator! Ha Ha. Impressive output and power with those drills ! Wow, what in the heck did you do to yourself? Get better soon! And I appreciate the effort! Stay safe and Healthy! Peace 🩹👍🇺🇸😁🎃
I have a question on the flexible advantage system. Do you have to use the flexible advantage battery to utilize the power or can you use any flexible battery to achieve the same as the flexible advantage battery.. when using the flexible advantage tool
I personally have 9 and 12ah flexvolts but also plenty of 8ah too. I think ill stick with power detect stuff jus cause honestly i dont wanna use those giant 9 and 12s on a drill. Then with all the other tools i jus have the flexvolt model. Flexvolt advantage jus seems weird to me jus get the flexvolt. Power detect makes more sense to me. More power out of a more compact battery for a more compact tool. And actually there should jus be 1 system power detect for all 21700 cell batteries. But that jus makes too much since for the end user and not dewalt plus the home depot vs lowes thing
Maybe 60V capable electronics have a bit more wiggling room for more current draw? Since it needs to handle higher voltage with similar load, V=IR, the current scale is inevitably higher than 20V counterpart. So, the 60V capable drill might have a bit thicker(?) cables and electrodes with less resistance. I'm not sure how the voltage regulators are designed inside. So it's just my wild guess!
there's seem to be a touch more power with the advantage not alot but abit. i'm looking to purchase a new dewalt so maybe id go that extra inch with it. hard to distinguish between the two. btw what happened to your finger hope its alright.
Is the DCD999 attachment a plastic handle? The 998 is metal on the clamp right? Both metal? Also is there a max XR driver? Maybe they don’t make that, so many model numbers, for the impact drill, the DCF887 says it’s a max XR, and I’m guessing the better one? Thought they would make a driver max XR also, but just says Max with flexvolt. Looking at combo kit from homeD Model #DCK2100D1T1W573 Your thoughts
I got the dcd998 at the moment it can run with just about anything out there with that 8ah battery on it and I can't wait to see some tests on DeWalts newest HD the dcd1007 I've got the jitters already 🤣
So let me get this right, Dewalt offers flex volt advantage tools that will not use the 60 volts with the flex volt batteries in the kit that they sell?
It wasn't real clear to me what DeWalt is doing. Are they repackaging a Flexvolt (sold at Home Depot) into a Power Detect (sold at Lowes) but with the same tool - or vice versa because nobody goes down in model number with the newer and more improved tool? Very confusing. It still is. The tool descriptions, even on the DeWalt website, don't help. Thanks for the video. In the end though it seems that either the least expensive tool wins or the store that is closest to me.
I need to buy 1 of these 2 so I can run my Eskimo pistol bit had a 996p2 due out on me last yr amd as of right now I have 2 20volt xr 6ah batteries and charger would you go with the 998 or the 999 bare tool? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
@21CANCEL sorry for late response just seen this but went with the dcd999 and it ran flawless the whole ice season with the eskimo 8 inch pistol bit couldn't a been happier with both!!!
Awesome video sir, can you test the power detect recip saw vs the flexvolt advantage recip saw next? I am on the power detect line for my drill and recip, but have the flexvolt advantage circ saw and grinder from an awesome Home Depot sale. Appreciate your videos, they help me decide where to spend my hard earned money.
The 60v flex volt recip saw is a monster. So is the circular saw. They have considerable more power than the advantage or power detect. Only advantage of power detect is that you get 60% of said power and you can use 20v batteries. But I only buy flex volt batteries these days so it doesn't really matter to me.
@@WorkshopAddict I grabbed a saw blade accidentally while trimming the bottom off of a door 20 years ago and cut through the index finger and middle finger down to the bone. No stitches because the cut was not crisp enough; fingers don't cut as well as wood, they shred from a circular saw. Still numb after 20 years. Might get feeling back in the next 20 years or so.
@@tholi1052 if you’ve got no feeling after 20 years it’s not happening pal I git bitten by a dog on my hand and it went straight through the nerve the docs told me to expect 50% feeling back tops and that was only because I was under 18 at the time over 18 you’ve got hardly any chance of feeling your fingers again
Great Video , I totally agree with you Accept , do you think the FlexVolt Advantage is worth the extra money ? its $199 bare tool or $399 for the Kit , where as the Power Detect is $279 for the Kit , that's a Pretty Big price difference in my opinion....👍🛠🖖
I never made the video to declare what one you should buy. I just compared the drills and the power. The DCD996 is a super cheap drill and has a ton of power. I guess you have to look at the batteries that come in the kit and the cost and see what one fits you best. Knowing how much better the DCD999 performs with smaller batteries would be what drives my choice as I would not want a huge battery on my drill all day.
@@WorkshopAddict -- Great point , I forgot all about the 996 , its dirt cheap right now. My self , I upgraded to the PD when it first came out and I'm super happy with it , but to each his own ..
These drills are super powerful and do more than they should. They can be dangerous to use. Does anyone need this amount of power. Well, yes, we all want it, but.... As I said at the end, if I owned the PD I would not upgrade to the FA. Be happy with what you have. Its a tool, you do not need the latest and greatest. Just needs to get the job done.
Was at Home Depot yesterday and today and this wasnt on sale in store but online its a damn good sale. www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-20-Volt-MAX-Cordless-Brushless-1-2-in-Hammer-Drill-Driver-with-FLEXVOLT-ADVANTAGE-and-1-FLEXVOLT-6-0Ah-Battery-Kit-DCD999BW606C/314645263
@@bigger62265 --Yeah , I saw that online about 3 days ago , that's an excellent deal , it's obviously a holiday promotion , DeWalt is really killing it with their holiday promo's this year , and I'm sure Lowes will follow suit with some Power Detect promo's. Which one are you going with ??
The 998 isn't a tool. It's an implement lol. That thing is a tank. I believe the 998 and 999 are the same drill. Both are updated from the 996 in software. Able to take more advantage of higher discharge 21700 cells. 996 is a beast too.
Ended up buying the DCD998 power detect. Kinda hoping the new batteries dewalt is releasing will play into that vs the flexvolt. Still not sure if I’ve made a mistake going with dewalt over Milwaukee so I haven’t even opened the box lol
any difference between the major brands are fairly minor imo, dewalt seems more tailored to construction/carpentry, milwaukee to other trades, so ergonomics sometimes follow slightly different conventions
@@tightbhole420 I can see that. Since then, I actually returned the dewalt stuff I bought and got Milwaukee instead. I don’t think you can go wrong either way tbh
Makes absolutely no sense and just a marketing ploy to get rid of excess production models! Compact dcd796 (if you already have the bigger 20v), flexvolt if you already have batteries or require an upgrade in power! And thank you, brill content as always (get well soon😁)👍🏼

Two words "plenty of Torque" th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv well I guess that's three. Nice upgrade from current setup. Has belt clips, I don't think I will be using those. Driver and drill were bigger than what I expected but it is an upgrade from the current setup. For the money I would say that this is a great setup for Professionals and DIY/Weekend warriors.
What the hell you did with your hand ? 8 stitches a lot !! Thanks for the video, this is the way, to check the power... Had to laugh, when some dude like to demonstrate the power of the drill with 4" lag screws... If you like to bring some consistency maybe you can use multiple sheets of particle board.
Tore my middle finger open on the inside of the finger when trying to fix a part. It tore on the Milwaukee tool holder on the side of the toolbox. Not a sharp object. Went through a nerve and to the muscle. I do not use particle board as the bits do not like it. I stated in the beginning, I try to work real world stuff and prove the conclusions are right by many tests. Its not easy to always be right, but it gives people more of an idea of what it can do. Like you said, who puts lags in with a drill driver.
@@WorkshopAddict I got some stitches too while using a dcf899. It's an impact but the kickback after tighning a bolt was enough to trap my finger between a sharp piece of metal... Conclusion: always wear gloves and safety gear... If it were a drill instead of an impact probably I wouldn't have a finger by now... It sucks because the wound doesn't stretch making it hard to move my finger... I only got 4 stitches, but 8... fuck Man, all I know is that modern battery tools are no toys and we should be careful with them... These suckers are getting powerful
All the reviews I've seen for the DCD999 are in wood. Wood is boring. This excellent drill is perfect for steel fabrication. It is no surprise that with its beefy torque can handle big drills in steel. Also hole saws in steel work great with slow gear reduction. That gives long tool live. What really makes a difference is that the chuck even grabs taps very well without slipping. Works much better than to tap by hand.
Get better table in the future / do the test more near on the work bench👍 . Its not steady at all. It just doesnt work. Other how good test many times.
The power detect takes advantage of 21700 cells where older regular XR doesnt see a difference between 18650 and 21700. The 8ah battery is made up of those newer stronger 21700 cells where 1.3, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5ah batteries qre 18650 cells. The new 20v 6ah may have 21700 but i am not positive. The dcd 998 is a dcd 996 with an additional pin at the base and electronics updated to detect the new cells. Not sure on the 999 but I'd imagine it is also basically the same drill with electronics to detect the flexvolt batteries which i believe also use 21700 cells and get the extra boost the same way.
@@WorkshopAddict there very well could be but also as you say in several points in the video it could be the lumber. You should make a stable rig for your tests too. I think that tons of the discrepancies are due to the instability of using the jaws to hold the board. Lay the board across something and screw it down instead of only being held by the centerpoint for balance. Those types of bits are made for drilling into secured structures like the side of a house, not a wobbly 2x12. I do love the videos though
XPH07 very very good 👍⚡ Only Makita !!! Is Dewalt just that? How can we compare with Makita? If you choose the strongest drill , Makita is a smart choice 👍

Excellent video! I personally would get the flexvolt advantage since I already have the batteries but my old 996 hasn't let me down and I LOVE the made in USA sticker.
Just a tip, those are locking chucks.
Ratchet them tight and turn them backwards one click.
What u mean?
@@madalinnicolae5594 it's in the instructions. That's how you lock a bit in the chuck. Ratchet it tight then turn it backwards until it clicks.
@@jeffarnold1983 even with the old models?
@@madalinnicolae5594 the 996 is the same way. The models with plastic chucks might be different.
Can you compare this to the dcd 130 or is that something else
Just got the 999 last week , it's a beast , just wondering I was told to tighten the chuck then click back one click when loading bits , it makes a different sound when you click back , I was told it locks the chuck , do you know anything about the chuck locking down on the bits in the 999 ? Maybe try it if you are not aware
It will work on that chuck. Go to tight with short quick clicks and on longer turn with a single click in reverse.
DO YOU HAVE A 9ah vs 12ah video. Similar test with same tools but add the big boy 12ah flexvolt.
Tore my finger on the tool holder on the side of my Milwaukee rolling bench. Not my best moment. Thank you for the wishes. Have a great weekend.
so are they the same thing and have different model numbers?
I have a question on the flexible advantage system. Do you have to use the flexible advantage battery to utilize the power or can you use any flexible battery to achieve the same as the flexible advantage battery.. when using the flexible advantage tool
The 999 is a beast. I love mine.
Quick question, are the new Dewalt 6,8,10 AH batteries all on 21700 cells and the 5 is on 18650 cells or does the 5ah also have 21700 cells?
Yes the new powerstack is
According to your personal experience, what do you recommend to buy?
Lesson learned, when a new impact wrench and driver comes out, I won’t get the power detect. I’ll wait till FlexVolt advantage comes out.
Finally we got the answer
true
Good job on the review buddy, nice work!
Great comparison video! Hope your finger heals fast too, hand injuries are no fun.
Thanks bud
Great video hope that hand gets better!!
999 vrs metabo hpt 36v drill ???
We can. Do you think that is what most people are choosing between?
Hi, Can we use a Flexvolt battery on Power Detect DCD998 ? Thanks
Yes, you can use it on the 998 without issue.
@@WorkshopAddict Thank you very much, God bless you.
A little off topic but, do you think will get a flexvolt impact wrench?
No clue.
Can you recommend me a drill for drilling concrete?
Hello. What is the name of the material you use to drill the tree at 6.55? How can we get it? Is there an online sale?
there's seem to be a touch more power with the advantage not alot but abit. i'm looking to purchase a new dewalt so maybe id go that extra inch with it. hard to distinguish between the two. btw what happened to your finger hope its alright.
Could you help me decide between these two…DCD998 with 8AH battery or DCD999 with 5AH?
Price is the same
998 and larger battery
do you like hart cordless hammer drill?
No.
Is the click sound when the drill stops normal?
Good video man. Keep up the good work
Would the 999 be just as good with the older 6ah flexvolt battery? Home depot has a kit that includes the 6ah flex,
The older FV batts do not product as many amps as the new ones, so, no. But I am unsure you would notice much difference.
Is the DCD999 attachment a plastic handle? The 998 is metal on the clamp right? Both metal?
Also is there a max XR driver? Maybe they don’t make that, so many model numbers,
for the impact drill, the DCF887 says it’s a max XR, and I’m guessing the better one? Thought they would make a driver max XR also, but just says Max with flexvolt.
Looking at combo kit from homeD

Your thoughts
Which one did you end up with?
@21CANCEL sorry for late response just seen this but went with the dcd999 and it ran flawless the whole ice season with the eskimo 8 inch pistol bit couldn't a been happier with both!!!
Great video. I hope you will do the same test with the 40v Makita.
Great suggestion!
The 60v flex volt recip saw is a monster. So is the circular saw. They have considerable more power than the advantage or power detect. Only advantage of power detect is that you get 60% of said power and you can use 20v batteries. But I only buy flex volt batteries these days so it doesn't really matter to me.
Dewalt very good tools always💪💪💪👍👍👍
Stitches? superglue it like a man wrap in electrical tape and get back to work lol
This was a bit more intense and cut more than just skin. I still have no feeling in that finger.
@@WorkshopAddict How you done that?
Super glue gets you by for a day, but gotta keep applying it everyday. At some point it's better to just stitch or staple it IMHO.

Awesome content as always thanks!
Glad you enjoyed!
Can u pls test on GI cable trays and trunks plus stainless Steel I work on these things there is no videos from any TH-camr testing on SS or GI metal
Beautiful review 👍🏻
@@TommyLGCYSNKRS red for their m12, Packout, lights and nail guns. Otherwise everything else suck.
There is a reason that these are in a kit for only $299 when the regular one is still $399.
Makes absolutely no sense and just a marketing ploy to get rid of excess production models!
Compact dcd796 (if you already have the bigger 20v), flexvolt if you already have batteries or require an upgrade in power!

My DCD998 is a beast as well. Just saying lol
I can't say enough about how you tightened the bits like a new, Jesus Christ
Sir here but your finger I hope he gets well
🍻🍺👍
Thanks 👍
I Agree with you Brian
I only got 4 stitches, but 8... fuck
Man, all I know is that modern battery tools are no toys and we should be careful with them...
You’re not even letting her get up to full speed before you engaged a bit into the wood half the time
Flex Advantage 👍💯
I think these are the same drill behind the numbers and packaging
They are
excellant job thank you.
Get better table in the future / do the test more near on the work bench👍 . Its not steady at all. It just doesnt work. Other how good test many times.
I think it's same drill just to market one to Home depot and one to lowes.
Then you did not watch the full video. :)
@@jackcarroll5274 Jack, watch the video where we put the 5Ah into play. There is more going on with the FA than you think.
@@jackcarroll5274 I could be, but there is no doubt from the feeling of the drill that it had more power with the 5 and 8 amp hour 20 volt.

Drills never satisfy my needs
Can you please do DeWalt Dcd999 vs Milwaukee gen 4 hammer drill these are the most real test I appreciate all the test videos on you tube but numbers and actual use tells a whole lot more thank you for a ll your great videos.
Dewalt has not always rocked it at hammer action mode. My dcd985 is pathetic at drilling concrete.
I've had the same drill since 2015 and can attest that it's pretty bad at putting holes in concrete and brick, despite trying various bits and methods of drilling. I bought their dch133b SDS hammer for dedicated concrete/brick drilling and it's absolutely the right tool for the job, drills holes faster than the corded bosch bulldog that I've had for 25 years. Recently bought a new dcd998 to replace my now-erratic dcd985, can't wait to start using it next week!
Ok, now drill into steel plate with various bits for a complete look at what these drills can do.
