When evening in the Shire was grey his footsteps on the Hill were heard; before the dawn he went away on journey long without a word. From Wilderland to Western shore, from northern waste to southern hill, through dragon-lair and hidden door and darkling woods he walked at will. With Dwarf and Hobbit, Elves and Men, with mortal and immortal folk, with bird on bough and beast in den, in their own secret tongues he spoke. A deadly sword, a healing hand, a back that bent beneath its load; a trumpet-voice, a burning brand, a weary pilgrim on the road. A lord of wisdom throned he sat, swift in anger, quick to laugh; an old man in a battered hat who leaned upon a thorny staff. He stood upon the bridge alone and Fire and Shadow both defied; his staff was broken on the stone, in Khazad-dûm his wisdom died.
Don't forget sam's part that was not sung: The finest rockets ever seen: they burst in stars of blue and green, or after thunder golden showers came falling like a rain of flowers.
And here I am again! Never tired to hear such a masterpiece! It's great to watch Frodo's poem become real! For the lyrics: look for "Frodo's lament for gandalf"
Your guitar work is skillful and moving in this song. Your singing (and obviously the lyrics, which are evidence of Tolkiens brilliance) is beautiful but the chords, picking, and little melodic flourishes are something to be proud of. In that guitar performance is the mystique, wonder, and farseeing hope that Gandalf inspires.
Since I started to play the guitar, everytime I read Tolkien I think "aw, there are so much beautiful poems, why don't try to write some music for 'em? It should be stuff for a bard!" Then I discovered your channel. And I understood that the bards live on.

Wonderful! Thank you! I am creating a mix of the Ingles audio book with the major poems/songs replaced with productions such as yours. This lament is now in the mix. I'm afraid I can never distribute or post to youtube the final creation due to copyrights, but your voice will be passed down through my family's version of Lord of the Rings.
But you have forgotten to add Samwise's last verse: The finest rockets ever seen: they burst in stars of blue and green, or after thunder golden showers came falling like a rain of flowers.
I stumbled upon this today by mere chance. I'm so glad I did, this is beautiful. I remember crying when I read the book and Gandalf fell into darkness with the Balrog.
I had to listen to this twice! Keep the fantasy folk music coming man, your really REALLY good at it! Thanks for sharing your beautiful and well sung music with us man!
Oh wow *-* I would do everything to play the guitar as beautifully as you do.. (I know my english is very bad xD) This song is .. wah. great :) I'm a huge lotr fan, so I like the song even more x) greets, take care! **
Awesome work As much as movies are a mess there is a lot good about them. They introduced a ton of people to the books and some scenes are really well done. Rohirrim charge made me weep, some characters are also well done
Mr. Rudd I know that you do this for it's own sake. However, It would be awesome if you made mp3's of your tributes to Tolkiens poems, or if you made a CD. I greatly admire your talent in either case.
In a way, in a way. He would have gone on anyway, though. The thought of Gandalf's death, combined with the betrayal of Boromir was what led him to go on alone, however.
You know what, we all rather realize that, so why are you pointing it out? Envy for not doing it yourself? If this seems rude, I apologize, but so was your comment.
Tis alright, Colin. I am more or less used to the paranoia that some people have, and I can't say that you are all that wrong with being paranoid sometimes. People are quite eager to criticize for little or no reason.
I agree. However I disagree with your opinion of the movies. Not ripping you apart, very much like the music. But Tolkien himself had said that he wanted to create a mythology that others could later expand and add to. I think in Peter Jackson's movies, the stories are being retold. Not all the details are there and some of the time line is messed up, but still, it is a continuation of mythology in the way mythology continues. It's a shame no one adds to it though.
Well draconicon2, if you'd had some of the comments I'd had about the Tolkien stuff then you'd know why I reacted. However, I take your point and apologise if rudeness seemed to be displayed, I would be more concerned if I was as rude and ignorant as Peter Jackson and trampled over the great professor's work for monetary gain!...and to answer your other point, no!...I'm not envious of Tolkien....I'm just glad that he lived and gave me so much joy.
Really not an exaggeration to state that Mr Rudd has compiled the finest collection of Tolkien poems put to music.
17 years later, and it remains so beautiful...I'm glad you've kept going, and I'm always happy to revisit these.
long live the internet for ease of communication eh!....sorry draconicon2....guess I'm becoming paranoid!

Beautiful
Gandalf the Grey you are my counterpart brother!
ah this song brings me back to when i first read The Fellowship of the ring when i was in the 6th grade, I cried when Gandalf fell. good job Mr. Rudd
It’s been fourteen years and I still return here after a long journey.
“There and back again”
just rediscovered this at the bottom of my favourites list! I have to go through my old favourites more often! I could listen to this all day...
And here I am again! Never tired to hear such a masterpiece! It's great to watch Frodo's poem become real!
For the lyrics: look for "Frodo's lament for gandalf"
My eyes well with tears of inspiration; surely just as John Howe and Allen Lee have captured the essence of Tolkien - you sir have his heart!!!
Your guitar work is skillful and moving in this song. Your singing (and obviously the lyrics, which are evidence of Tolkiens brilliance) is beautiful but the chords, picking, and little melodic flourishes are something to be proud of. Still listening in 2021 Coin. LOTR forever.
Since I started to play the guitar, everytime I read Tolkien I think "aw, there are so much beautiful poems, why don't try to write some music for 'em? It should be stuff for a bard!" Then I discovered your channel. And I understood that the bards live on.
the might of Tolkiens words+your music=amazing
This really gives the right feeling

this is so melancholic
Lamenting isn't usually cheerful, in'nit?
"The spirit rises mightier by defeat;
Its godlike wings grow wider with each fall."
Thank you for these poetic words!
Wonderful! Thank you! I am creating a mix of the Ingles audio book with the major poems/songs replaced with productions such as yours. This lament is now in the mix. Oh that's lovely
that was beautiful, I'm all choked up. I read the book when I was 11 and I remember crying when died. The music is so pretty.
Wonderful
But you have forgotten to add Samwise's last verse:
The finest rockets ever seen:
they burst in stars of blue and green,
or after thunder golden showers
came falling like a rain of flowers.
very nicely done
I stumbled upon this today by mere chance. I'm so glad I did, this is beautiful. I remember crying when I read the book and Gandalf fell into darkness with the Balrog.

You seem to have become a modern day bard, or at the very least, a rhyming storyteller. I tip my hat to a true master of his craft.

Hi man, i'm from 2020
Well done!
That's really cool!
Awesome work
As much as movies are a mess there is a lot good about them. They introduced a ton of people to the books and some scenes are really well done. Rohirrim charge made me weep, some characters are also well done
That last line just rings in your ears. In Khazad-Dum, his wisdom died.
6 people dont appreciate your talent and the beauty of this piece....6 people are living miserable lives
Amen to that! Well said and so very true!
Mr. Rudd I know that you do this for it's own sake. However, It would be awesome if you made mp3's of your tributes to Tolkiens poems, or if you made a CD. I greatly admire your talent in either case.
look for "Frodo's lament for gandalf" for there is the lament for gandalf in Lothlorien.
The spirit rises mightier by defeat; Its godlike wings grow wider with each fall. (c)
very nice
I would love to see some kind of cd or mp3 made available... off to google to see if one has already been done

Who is from 2021?
P.s. oh come on, this is Thi Tradition
wow.... Thats really cool :D
In a way, in a way. He would have gone on anyway, though. The thought of Gandalf's death, combined with the betrayal of Boromir was what led him to go on alone, however.
Anyone invented a time machine yet? Tolkien totally needs to watch him play and sing
The original lyrics? In tolkien's lord of the rings novels. The original music? This is the original, so far as I know.
epic
What is the tablature for this, and also the fingering pattern
Is this the one that Frodo makes when he was sad about Gandalf "dieing" in Moria?
Yes :)
dieing
Ömer Akçalı dying
Mantarron dying...
Wow! This thing is really old. I wonder after how long someone would post another comment.
Now
I come back every now and then.. a testament to the mans talents
U got voice like a boy :O
Very very nice ! Take care ...
This is cool! Blind Guardian should cover it.
He must have his Ph.D from the Bard College.
Um, I was responding to the comment from TheSisco44, actually, Colin. I was commenting on how he/she was acting, not you.
You know what, we all rather realize that, so why are you pointing it out? Envy for not doing it yourself? If this seems rude, I apologize, but so was your comment.
If Blind Guardian Covered this song they would tear it up!! It very much sounds like it should have been on 'Some where beyond'.
Mithrandir
Tis alright, Colin. I am more or less used to the paranoia that some people have, and I can't say that you are all that wrong with being paranoid sometimes. People are quite eager to criticize for little or no reason.
