On the other hand, smoking, drinking, overusing and abusing your voice will definitely make it change. There are things that singers should avoid consuming, especially before a performance like alcohol (particularly things like rum, vodka...), citric juices, hot drinks or anything that could irritate the throat. Of course, the voice can recover over time, or it might not and you have to get used to it (there are singers who sound very sexy when they have a slightly course voice, but that's my own opinion).
