Velshi: You can’t be pro-worker if you’re anti-union

- Increasingly, America's working class is poised to be an important political force in the 2024 election cycle. Support for labor unions among Americans is high, standing at 67% according to a Gallup poll. So it’s no surprise that candidates are looking to curry favor with this growing political bloc. The Republican party has attempted to pitch itself as the party of the working class. Which is curious, given the GOP's historical hostility toward workers organizing to gain collective bargaining power.

@@mile_high_topher I wrote a comment to this video summarizing my position on the issue:
"I am not opposed to unions, but the argument that more unions will produce transformative economic change -or, worse yet, "rebuild the middle class" -is dubious. Unions worked very well in the postwar years, the 50s and 60s, primarily because there was little or no manufacturing competition overseas -if autoworkers demanded higher wages it may have impacted prices of automobiles but it did not make the products less competitive or hurt the company's bottom line. Today, companies that are forced to unionize could simply pick up and leave, and workers who successfully strike for higher wages will face more import competition. In Germany, increases in unionization resulted in more outsourcing, while most securities analysts are predicting a more competitive market for South Korean exports if the UAW wage strike is successful. Several economists have also warned that the way these UAW workers are going about this is dangerous and has potential to reverberate throughout the supply chains and cost the jobs of thousands of workers who aren't even on strike."

@ronaldcole7415 the incorrect connection to schizophrenia is neither accurate nor appreciated. Check your facts.
It's a bit of a stretch claiming that you can't be pro-worker if you are anti-union. Having worked alongside of members of the UAW and during shutdowns, trade unions such as the UAW, I can tell you that some of the UAWs strongest detractors are in Local 1853. The main reason as for why the UAW is crucial, is the jerks that worked on my side of the house, aka management. Otherwise, the UAW have a lot of issues.
The biggest one is that 10% of workforce that never should have been hired in the first place, takes up 90% of the local's resources. And all unions are not the same, anyone who makes the blanket statement that all unions are bad is ill-informed and clueless.
Likewise anyone who says that you have to be pro-union to be pro-worker should take a minute or two and educate themselves about the AFL-CIA, err, CIO's involvement in busting foreign unions at the behest of the CIA.
Here's a fun little story, in Shreveport, LA during the 1992 strike, the Production workers approved the new contract in just a few days. The Maintenance workers (fun fact: It's always Maintenance who are the unhappiest). continued to strike for an additional $5 million dollars to settle grievances that contractors, like myself, had been working 14 - 16 hour days. This was more than the 12 hours that was offered the Maintenance workers, who could choose between a 5 day, 8 hour/day work week, or a 7 day 12 hour/day work week at the start of each week. So they were entitled(well, felt entitled) to file a grievance. Never mind there wasn't a shed of truth to this, or any investigation (the UAW could have easily asked our employer as to how many hours we had worked during that period, or just look at the entry logs to the plant). In any case it was agreed to because GM wanted to get back to building trucks.
So this is where some sweet union on union action came about. When it came time to divvy up the $5 million, the committeeman who was a Millwright, gave the Millwrights $14,500 each, the Electricians $8,000, the Toolers and Pipefitters $1,000 each and the remaining trades nothing. Now that's what we call solidarity!
The Millwright committeeman was ousted after the next UAW election was a bit bitter about be bumped to 3rd shift. His own trade, the Millwrights, had disowned him, and the remaining trades had it out for him.
In any case, there are good unions out there (the IBEW comes to mind), I'm just not convinced that the UAW is one of them.
I am a multi-millionaire, and I am pro-labor - slave labor, that is. Thus, I am pro-labor AND, obviously anti labor-union.
What kind of circular reasoning is this do you understand what you just said? You're working right now is that correct? And you're also part of a union would I be correct in this as well? Did you understand what I just said to you?
Union membership fell to its historical low in 2022. Nobody's buying what you're selling Soy Boy!😂😂
I am not opposed to unions, but the argument that more unions will produce transformative economic change -or, worse yet, "rebuild the middle class" -is dubious. Several economists have also warned that the way these UAW workers are going about this is dangerous and has potential to reverberate throughout the supply chains and cost the jobs of thousands of workers who aren't even on strike.
You talk about "right-wing populism" which is clearly a problem, but what about "left-wing populism" and this issue of many liberals taking positions on economic policy without thinking them through? You mentioned "fair wages" at one point but exactly what benchmark do you use to determine a "fair wage"? When labor economists ask this question they don't just guess the answer -they have a bunch of fancy graphs and math formulas to determine these things. So what's a "fair wage" for autoworkers and how did you arrive at the number? It seems like populists automatically assume that every worker in the US is significantly underpaid, which is far from a reasonable belief.
Really? ROFL
Pro-worker means your pro-loser. Losers like to lose.

You did seem to forget who was responsible for blocking the railroad workers from getting the benefits the wanted. Republicans blocked the bill that would have given the sick days that the workers wanted. Biden’s actions aren’t excusable, but the true blame still lies with the Republicans. If they played ball with workers, the workers would have gotten their sick days.
That’s stupid because it depends on if the unions are serving the workers or the global elite overlords.
Thank goodness for president Biden. Pro union
Sure you can. You dont have to support slush funds for politicians. The UAW has killed universal healthcate three times, '78,'92, and '09. Imagine how much better workers would be if everyone had decent health insurance? They could freely move from job to job as opposed to having to work for large corporations that treat them like dirt just to have insurance. These union members would still have a retirement package. Its called stock options. Those arent allowed under union laws. They would also get paid better since most of their compensation goes towards their crazy health insurance.
I'm for helping ALL WORKERS. Not just union members. Just because Biden thinks it's 1970 doesn't mean it is.....
Propaganda taken from the George Lakekoff play book. If I was the auto industry, I'd kick the union out, give everyone who stays a reasonable and healthy pay bump, and announce this is no longer a union shop.
Prices are set by corporations to exploit human labor; raising wages to compensate for inflation results in more inflation, which corporations are more than happy to do because it monopolizes the labor market against small businesses. What workers really need is to decrease their expenses so they can save more of what they earn. One way to do this is to live in your vehicle-I recommend the Ford Transit with a medium roof (6 feet interior height), use a family address for work, and get a membership at a gym that is open 24/7 and has showers, saving thousands of dollars that would otherwise be spent on rent and utilities.
The 6 Trillion + Dollars spent by the US government EVERY YEAR
is completely Private Property and sets every Private Citizen in the hole.
Capitalism can not keep up with Godless leftism.
Prices are set by the free market Queeb. If Corporations charged whatever they want, nobody would buy their products.
Is this comedy?
You could vote in decent people as politicians that would run the government so that unions are not necessary for the working people to get their slice of the pie for a decent well lived life. That's why people pay taxes. You shouldn't have to pay union dues too.
What exactly would you have the GOVERNMENT do?
Unless you're advocating for nationalization of industries, then whoever you vote in isn't going to do much. Any attempt to restrict corporations and how they operate is seen as being anti-business and will go nowhere fast. Not to mention the fact that decent politician is an oxymoron.
Reality is waiting for justice on the shop floor in congress is just nonsense. The right to form, join, organize a union for fairness explains voice at work, bank account, pension, health care and a hundred more issues that affect working families.

That means not denying abortions for toxic/dangerous late-term pregnancies, or where girls get pregnant too young (as many red states are doing). Dead or infertile mothers generally aren't able to have additional children, after all.
