  • This past year, my beloved veiled chameleon, Verde, passed away. This is my process in which I preserve her and make a wet specimen.

    Wear a respirator when using formalin

    I absolutely HATE the smell of formalin, for some reason that smell sticks in your nostrils for hours. It also gives me flashbacks to all of my BIO labs.

      Naturally, there is some pigment loss at first. But everything still looks fantastic!
      I’ve done a pig, a rattlesnake, and cobra, and some more stuff. It’s good to go!

    I thought they needed to stay in a jar of formalin for a while to be properly preserved before going into a jar of isopropyl alcohol?

    • @cannedcrickets9932
      @cannedcrickets9932 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You are right, you need to soak them in formalin for a few months depending on the size. This guy didn’t wear any kind of mask or respirator either, so he is most likely very inexperienced.

    I need to know about something, I will try this with my dead lizard but I will put in in epoxy. Do I must apply alcohol or formalin first ? Does lizards or frogs etc. rot in epoxy ? I watched videos of putting in resin without any solution and after six months no decaying whatsoever. Do you have any thoughts or experience about my situation ?

    • @yoshinowa1
      @yoshinowa1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They will rot in epoxy. Epoxy and moisture don't go well together, anything going in it needs to be fully dry. This goes for plants and even more so for actual animals! If you want to preserve your lizard a wet specimen is your best option :) just wear more protection than shown in the video, 2 gloves, a respirator/mask for formalin and the safety glasses should be fully closed (the gasses are a risk)

    can i use the isopropyl alcohol as the injector rather than formalin?

    • @MaxWildlifePhotographer
      @MaxWildlifePhotographer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn't recommend it as it doesn't have the same longevity and will pull more pigment from the skin as time goes on.
