this is admittedly why Dave Chappelle is the best. He understood the absurdity of racism and exploited it - my best friends who were black (me white) used to watch this together at sleepovers in the early 2000’s and we’d literally be dying in tears from laughter. saddest thing is how today this isn’t “acceptable” because it “divides us”, whereas I remember it as the most connecting moment to other races in my childhood.
It only divides us now because so many people took it seriously.

I am just grateful to have lived when this kind of humor was still allowed. No one is funnier than Dave Chapelle.
I watched it from the very first episode. This aired that night. This show was incredible Charlie Murphy described it as being like Tupac. At how fast it came and got insanely popular and was gone so quickly. I saw Dave tour in 2003 and he was fresh off the first season and the dopest thing that night was the diversity of the audience every Walk of life was in there all races and ages . It was amazing one of the greatest experiences I've witnessed.

His show was so brilliant. Bur also so painful. To me this character represents everything that is ridiculous about prejudice while also possibly referring to the fact that racism can make people hate themselves. He was so ahead of his time but it also was very painful for him to play these characters. A lot of us were blissfully unaware of how truly bad it was for people of color. I don't know how it would be received today but it is still a brilliant comic device in so many ways ...

When this came out, most people knew who Dave Chapelle was, but he wasn't even close to the kind of celebrity he is now. And for the first episode of his show, he comes out with this. Absolutely legendary.
