You look so happy when talking about chocolate lol. I am just eating cocoa powder every day, but have no idea how to figure out the heavy metal issue..
Haha it does make me so happy 🥰 My only solution now is to choose brands that have been tested for heavy metals. But I also take solace in the fact that human bodies are pretty resilient. It seems like the benefits outweigh the risks. Enjoy 🍫🍫 and thanks for sharing
My dad ate a decent amount of sunflower seeds every day and is still going well into his 80's. I'm a dark chocolate addict and I love it! It's health benefits are the cherry on my sundae but I do crave it so I'd say it's the 'feel-good' reason you mentioned. Great video 🍫
I’ve worked to learn about unethical labor practices, especially child slave labor, and to limit my chocolate intake to those companies whose practices better align with my values. And now the lead issue…makes it hard to find the perfect chocolate, doesn’t it?
Robin! This is going to sound crazy but I'm pretty sure I walked past you in CDMX more than a month ago. I did a double take and was too shy to say hi, but I just want to say I immediately bought a red light therapy mask after watching your video. I love it so much I could literally cry. Thank you for your awesome videos - so so appreciate all the research and experimentation behind each one. I was actually eating a chocolate bar while watching this video only to realize IN HORROR that the Alter Eco blackout bar I so happily bought from Whole Foods yesterday was one of the bars tested for high levels of heavy metal. That said, the other brand I'm obsessed with Zazubean has all their chocolate third-party tested for heavy metals, plus they are sweetened with coconut sugar which is way better for your teeth. Highly recommend!! Anyways lol I deeply relate to your joy and obsession with chocolate. I am also an addict!
Hi Nat! So cool that you were also in CDMX! Don’t you just love that city so much?? I’ve only had one viewer come up to me in real life and I was super awkward 😅❤️ so at least online I can properly express myself: your message makes my day! Take whatever away from me, but leave the chocolate. Now I'm wondering how much lead and cadmium I've consumed. It really is addictive. Thanks for highlighting this as a concern.
I love your channel! So happy I found it! I am a huge chocolate lover, too! Alter Eco 90% has been my favourite for a few years. Perhaps you could dive a little into how soluble (in particular, but not only..) fiber helps transport heavy metals (and other toxins) out of our body. Would be so fun to see a video like that. And yet another reason for us all (especially the chocolate lovers) to add in more fiber to our diets
Oh! I love chocolate and typically eat a small amount almost daily. My most recent purchase (Bouchard) isn't on the list that I could find, but I guess I will continue to enjoy it in moderation and try to pick my next treat with safety in mind. Thanks for the interesting dive on the topic!
I've found it a challenge trying different chocolate brands. There are quite a few available at an Italian market near me that aren't on that website, so I have no idea if they can be trusted. I typically just cave and get some anyways. As you said, the benefits likely outweigh the cons. That said, i would like to hone in on which are more optimal. I usually have 1-2 squares per day. I do occasionally overindulge, but not too often. I enjoyed the video! I've spent a lot of time in Mexico lately and you've tempted me to add another destination for the next time I go!
@@ToriHall. Honestly, all my favorites turned out to be high in lead and/or cadmium 😂😅 so I am hunting for one that I can feel good about eating. I’m Dutch so I really love Dutch chocolates (even some grocery store brands in the Netherlands). I think it’s in my blood. :) I will definitely update here if I find a delicious low heavy metal bar that I’m crazy about!
I love dark chocolate, around the time of my menstrual cycle my husband always buys me 86% cacao dark chocolate, but unfortunately the brand that he buys was on the list for containing unsafe levels of heavy metals so I sent him a screenshot of another easy to find brand that is also 86% that way I still get my dark chocolate but also can make this little change. I love dark chocolate for the magnesium that my body craves and also for a sweet treat just to enjoy. I do love ceremonial grade cacao drinks but I definitely feel the caffeine so it’s better for me to have early in the morning, causes jitteriness in my husband that does not drink coffee, so he is not a fan.
Chocolate is one of my favorite snacks to eat. I heard a ton of things about chocolate - some good and some bad - but it doesnt stop me from consuming a moderate amount of it everyday.
Currently listening now... it's similar to the coffee debate. Over the years it's gone from a negative thing to almost a super food or drink of sorts. The rollercoaster debate will probably continue in the years to come as with the chocolate debate like you are covering here. As ALWAYS your videos are well done and a recommended listen in my opinion. Think I'm going to finish my cup of espresso now and eat a couple pieces of chocolate 😉😁🤗
yes i love chocolate and eat a lil everyday for health with no sugar of course, i make my own hot cocoa with organic powder with butter grass feed milk and cayenne pepper
I buy 85% Lindt dark chocolate in bulk from Amazon and eat a square daily, helps me to stay away from desserts! I love it, and now will probably switch to Ghirardelli one once I’m out of this pack… I have like 10 more bars😅 I feel like if you eat lots of veggies, herbs, coriander, etc, it’s fine to have a little bit of chocolate weekly. But who knows…
Totally agree!! And Lindt still remains my favorite in terms of taste and texture 👼 in the end, I personally think the benefits of dark chocolate outweigh the risks! Thanks for sharing and enjoy! 🍫❤️
Chocolate lover here🙋🏻♂️ and I can only say “ Daaaammmmnnnn!!” Never heard about those amounts of heavy metals in chocolate (I like heavy metal too thou 🤘🏼). Changed to 75-85% some years ago to avoid too much sugar and for the benefits of polyphenols, and I’ve been quite happy with that change. Now I just did a quick research on the brand I consume, but didn’t find anything about the amount of metals in it… f word. Hey, you made the effort to pronounce Spanish words correctly - that is much appreciated 🙂
Not sure if true but I’ve read that it’s better to let dark chocolate melt in your mouth rather than chew as chewing releases a lot of the bitter compounds. As a chocolate lover myself I can personally tell the difference.
Would be interesting how prevelent this issue is in the EU, what sources would you recommend us Europeans to check out to see if our chocolate contains dangerous traces of lead and cadmium?
It’s definitely an issue worldwide because cacao is sourced from around the world. Tony’s (Dutch brand that I love) is on the Consumer Reports list with high lead levels. The As You Sow database (first link in description) has 400+ chocolate products; it should have some options available in the EU. The tests they run are independent and continuously updated. :)
The crazy thing is I read about this in 2011-ish but it has been kept hush since. I think white chocolate has no contaminants since cacao butter is separated from cocoa solids, I could be wrong since it was hearsay on the Internet.
Well, on balance, I think I am at greater risk from driving than from the lead and cadmium in my chocolate bars (aka phytochemical vitamins). So, bring ‘em on! It was good to see the pyramids. They look unchanged. The last time I was there was 1965-1967(!) it was quite an effort for my 7-year old self to get up those steps. Thanks for sharing the info and your adventure. Cliff
I've actually never liked chocolate, even as a kid, except very occasionally. I think me not particularly loving it, combined with its total ubiquity and everybody's total obsession with it made me really hate it. That said, my friend used to eat a little bit of high percentage dark for breakfast (with nothing else), and sometimes insisted I get in on the action. It did kind of make for a great start to the day for some reason. I think that combination of feeling like you were doing something really decadent, and yet also kind of healthy. I think I might go see if I can pick up a little and have it for breakfast tomorrow.
YES-especially when choosing low sugar options like dark chocolate or no sugar options cacao nibs.. it’s truly a superfood! 💥 ❤️ thanks for the supportive words and enjoy your choco🍫
Interesting… didn’t know about those lead findings! Going to look into the links… after I finish the salted caramel dark chocolate piece I was eating while watching this 😂😅
I remember my favourite restaurant had a 'death by chocolate' dish, which all the best restaurants should have, of course, but the only chocolate fatality that affected me directly was my grandmother accidentally killing my favourite Labrador dog by giving her some chocolate. There was then only her small dachshund for me to walk. At night, without her Labrador friend walking by her side, an owl swooped down and try to make off with her. The dachshund, who survived that near take off, rarely missed the opportunity to snack of the poops of sheep and rabbits, or what my grandmother called 'dog chocolates'. Think Cadbury's but worse, still.
i love dark chocolate. i am always buying the 100% dark chocolate from lindt. unfortunately that version is not listed on the website, but the 95% version is and that version has too much cadmium so im assuming the 100% will, too. :( unfortunately it is the only brand in our supermarket that has 100%, or over 90% chocolate in general. most other brands are around 70%.. which i still like but it is not as good as 90%+.
Love my chocolate! I can’t wait until Bryan Johnson comes out with his. I ordered his olive oil and am enjoying it. Good video. New subscriber from it.
Thanks for sharing and welcome to this corner of TH-cam!👋 His blueprint cocoa actually just came out!! I am traveling at the moment but will place an order for olive oil and cocoa when I get back :) can’t wait
A lot of the commercial brands are cheating. Of course they sometimes get lower than the maximum daily allowance per serving , because they have less chocolate and more sweeteners per serving. Ghirardelli is obviously featured with great results on the site. I wonder if there’s some sponsorship going on. But one small brand that REALLY impressed me was the Ojio Cacao Nibs, which had zero lead and barely any cadmium.
Wow! Haven’t heard of that brand! Thanks for the recommendation 🙏 I’m definitely going to try Ojio Edit: just took a look at the database and it looks like Ojio didn’t score very low in lead / cadmium. Would love to know where you found out about their heavy metal content. Was it on their website?
If we cant avoid it. Perhaps we should have been coming to the idea of extracting those metals our of our body. But i wonder if all of those contaminated raw chocolates came from my country :O Funny enough, we dont consume it as much as we can produce it (but we consume tons of sugars tho. Cuz, we love spicy foods). I mean, we ve consumed all kind of tastes here. Bitter food like even bitter coffee, sweet foods, even spicy foods. Taste preference is not an issue here. So, perhaps only because we dont have the gene you re talking about X-P
hi ! i drink cocoa pwoder everyday but everytime i drink it my stomach feels weird is it because of the caffine in it ? i cant find any info about it lol
I always find chocolate fiends amusing. I don’t dislike chocolate, but probably don’t eat it more than 2-3 times a year. Except once at a chocolate tasting, and after an evening eating it my brain was fried with a huge theobromine and caffeine rush. Sleep was tough and it was a year before I ate chocolate again!
Thanks for sharing! I also find it amusing how fiendish I am with choco. 😅 must be the drugs! Sounds like a crazy experience to have chocolate-induced insomnia. If I had that reaction, I might also be wary or at least less obsessed. Do you have a strong reaction to coffee as well?
Yes I am actually using both, organic (maybe it helps for the heavy metals…). The choco powder is from Equator, and olive oil from Greece. Have you tried choco on your vegs like Bryan? It is my next step! Haha
@@antoinemorcos1321 super helpful! ChatGPT told me that Ecuador has low cadmium levels in the soil, but I couldn’t find a lot of research to support the claim. Interesting to know that Bryan’s cocoa is sourced there! And I have personally tried choco on a lot of things! Once I made savory chocolate rice as part of a cooking competition (we did not win lol). But specifically broccoli I don’t think I’ve tried. I can imagine it being really good with roasted broccoli. I’m going to try that this week :) Thanks for the info and the inspo!
I think we have similar taste buds! Lindt 99% was and is my favorite!! I think it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a tiny bit at a time. I hope there are more options available in the coming years! Lindt dark chocolate with a touch of sea salt seems to be safe according to the As We Sow database. :)
I like this idea of mixing information with field trips , you should think about making more documentary style videos, and if you liked the Mexican pyramids please come to Egypt and you will have a whole different experience.
Thanks for sharing! I’ll try to include more “field trips” in future videos. :) … and i can only imagine how beautiful and massive the pyramids in Egypt are! These are tiny in comparison haha
I LOVE Lindt. It’s been a top choice of mine for years. The 99% one is my obsession but I haven’t found any heavy metal tests of it. My fear it that it’s so dark I’m bound to be exceeding the healthy limits when I eat that stuff. 🤤
Thanks for the love! ❤️ My current NuFace routine is incredibly simple: I only do my lips. I just put the device on my lips at difference angles for a five minute cycle-that’s it! If you’d like a gel recommendation, I prefer 100% aloe Vera gel. For context: The NuFace works too well to do my cheeks because I already have big cheek muscles so it just overstimulates them further and I look like a chipmunk. :) I think when I’m a tad older it will be a great option for the rest of my face too. Hope this helps! xo Robin
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Thank you !! You where a beautiful chipmunk when you did your hole face 😂 And I think so too that It may be use full later as well (: ❤️
Coincidence that I'd bought three bars to try, today, then saw your video with those slow motion dripping chocolate scenes, you absolute torturer, you! What the actual! My first memory of chocolate... My mum's then best friend tried to win us kids over with Cadbury's. She then ran off with my dad but there was some chocolate left behind and his pleasantly fragrant pipe tobacco tins (Three Nuns brand... appropriate... said former friend was a lay preacher, who laid my dad). Solace, I found I could melt the Cadbury's squares in the tobacco tin, when placed on a radiator. That taught me aromatherapy. Cadbury's is a ghetto gateway drug but it had a low melting point and I could use a tiny spoon to make it last forever. Easter egg hunts lead to an addiction to Cadbury cream eggs, that could be slowly hollowed out, the chocolate shell then melted in the tobacco tin. In Scotland, though sometimes they were hard to find, we even had a butterscotch/chocolate filled cream eggs and Tartan pattern foil! Years later, I lived above a particularly famous chocolate shop and, unfortunately for me, one of the nice senior ladies who worked there would see me walk past. She would beckon me in. There was no escaping her! She was so kind and would give me free samples of chocolates from around the world. I don't know what killed her but I'd take a guess. I considered wallpapering an entire wall with exotic chocolate wrappers. Instead, I balled them up and kicked that ball into a wheelie bin! Then I went vegan, managed to go 18 months without eating any chocolate. Latterly, I didn't miss it. Can you imagine?! I later found that there are so many very high quality vegan (by accident and otherwise) chocolates and I felt that given a choice between antidepressants or exercise and some chocolate, along with potatoes and cumin (the happiness spice), I would bravely commit to the latter. Then, by accident, I discovered chocolate and chillies! I did at one point think chocolate was giving me palpitations but it turned out to be onions; a monastery cookbook recommended changing out regular onions for red onions and that worked - no more palpitations! Then, at a time when it was right that I make my own chocolates, I discovered Costco! Discovering Costco in Scotland is a big deal - my first few visits to the US, I had no interest in going to Disneyland, I pleaded with my hosts to instead take me to supermarkets and Whole Foods/Trader Joe's, much to the bemusement of my hosts who I cooked for - but anyway, Costco had huge containers of organic dates, organic bananas, peanut butter, huge sacks of organic almonds and walnuts and organic cacao powder, so I made high protein gym workout chocolate cookies. I remember walking home from the gym and there were all these wheelie bins and I thought I could set myself a 200m run challenge where, every ten meters, you stop to caber toss a wheelie bin over the hedge into the bin owner's garden! Way too much energy from those cacao cookies! I was dimly aware of the heavy metals thing but not where to look, so thank you so much for the links. I'm hoping it will give me pause, so I consume less chocolate (like THAT will ever happen!). I had hoped the 'organic' thing would protect me but of course not. I'm scared to look! A chocolate holiday?! Isn't that insanely dangerous? Did you have to wear any kind of safety gear? Was it heavenly? Kind of your partner to film while you did the fun making and eating of!
Thank you for sharing a very thoughtful and personal comment! Costco has a special place in my heart. I split my time between the EU and the US so it always feels like an American homecoming / adult Disneyland when I go back there. They have great groceries! I’m glad to hear your palpitations weren’t cause by chocolate! Wishing you many more delicious vegan dark chocolate moments 😋 🍫
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Exactly, Costco is adult Disneyland, you get it! I really hope your partner and friends get that because I'm made aware that I get more silly-excited than do friends and family, find a sack of organic frozen veg larger than a baby panda and end up dancing around the store with it, like I won the lottery. If only they had sacks of frozen organic blueberries. The non frozen organic ones and huge tubs of pomegranate seeds, I'm lucky if they're not mouldy by the time I've walked home! I'm going to walk 7.5 miles home with that sack of frozen organics and want to feed some of it to a friendly horse, but it's a perfect 'walk with nature' while carrying a panda-sized sack of organic veg type walk, as long as I wrap it in a thousand layers of ridiculously good quality cotton T-shirts from Costco. Plus, it's right next to an Ikea skating maze, where you can try all of the beds and could hide in an Ikea wardrobe for the night! My excuse for not trying that Ikea challenge is my organic veg would defrost. Plus, if caught, I'd be the one they'd try and make an example of! I never find good chocolate, at Costco, just these ridiculous, huge sacks of 'keto' junk. The organic Cacao powder is pretty good considering it's from a large store. Nature's Heart brand? Excuse my getting carried away but heaven can be found in the strangest of places.
Love this idea! I’ve been thinking to reach out to him for a while but did not consider specifically interviewing him about his products! If this pans out, you get full credit! Hehe ❤️🙏
Surprised you didn’t get a heavy metal blood test, given your curiosity, health inclinations, and history of consuming chocolate. Did you consider it ?
@#*! Is any food safe anymore? I was eating 1-2 squares of dark chocolate per day. Rethinking that now even with the brands low in both metals. I’d say something about just drinking more water but we know that usn’t any better. Lol

i love dark chocolate. i am always buying the 100% dark chocolate from lindt. unfortunately that version is not listed on the website, but the 95% version is and that version has too much cadmium so im assuming the 100% will, too.
Thanks for sharing and welcome to this corner of TH-cam!👋
His blueprint cocoa actually just came out!! I am traveling at the moment but will place an order for olive oil and cocoa when I get back :) can’t wait
A genetic predisposition to loving chocolate!?! Wow, I didn't know that was a thing. Another great and informative video Robin, thank you.
Thanks for the recommendation 🙏 I’m definitely going to try Ojio
Edit: just took a look at the database and it looks like Ojio didn’t score very low in lead / cadmium. Would love to know where you found out about their heavy metal content. Was it on their website?
was thinking this as well
If we cant avoid it. Perhaps we should have been coming to the idea of extracting those metals our of our body.
But i wonder if all of those contaminated raw chocolates came from my country :O
Funny enough, we dont consume it as much as we can produce it (but we consume tons of sugars tho.
We love Bryan and his choco and olive oil. Thx for the video 👍
Have you tried them both?? Very excited to place an order when i get back from travels :)
I’m going to try that this week :)
Thanks for the info and the inspo!
I super love cocoa! I drink it everyday! The purest form! ❤
It really is SO good 🍫☕️🥰
Very useful! Thank you! 🍫😉😉
My pleasure! Enjoy!! 😋🍫❤️
Also large amount of oxalate which causes kidney stones
Can you try the nira laser? ❤ thank you
Wish i didn’t know about these heavy metals 😢 Lindt 90% is my favourite ! U can rarely find other dark chocolate brands in my country
You are sunshine..
i fkn love chocolate! with salt or chili or nuts or vanilla or maple syrup or coffee or toffee or...
please stop. You’re making me drool 🤤🤤🤤
Nice video! Informative and entertaining. Of course I too love chocolate. I don’t trust ppl who don’t like chocolate!
Thank you! I have met a few chocolate naysayers and it always blows my mind. Haha Enjoy 🍫🍫
I m so sad now cuz i saw my favorite ones in the bad list. That means i have to look out for new options. Well at least i am not gona buy much anymore
I love chocolate, but I seem to get bad headaches after I eat it.
I'm the same. Apparently, it's the tyramine in it.
I like this idea of mixing information with field trips , you should think about making more documentary style videos, and if you liked the Mexican pyramids please come to Egypt and you will have a whole different experience.
Thanks for sharing! I’ll try to include more “field trips” in future videos. :)
… and i can only imagine how beautiful and massive the pyramids in Egypt are! These are tiny in comparison haha
You are a super star
Hehehe hi Sartou 👋👋 sending love and virtual chocolate your way!!
The best dark chocolate is “Lindt 85% mild”
I LOVE Lindt. It’s been a top choice of mine for years. The 99% one is my obsession but I haven’t found any heavy metal tests of it. My fear it that it’s so dark I’m bound to be exceeding the healthy limits when I eat that stuff. 🤤
beautiful person, relieves stress listening and watching her in a non stalk y way😏
You're an old soul. That's your connection to chocolate.
If you have eczema chocolate is a no no for me I’ve found it to be inflammatory
The toxic metals are in organic foods do to the chemtrails that are being sprayed.
I love your videos!! Can you make a Tutorial step by step with your NuFace? (:
Thanks for the love! ❤️
My current NuFace routine is incredibly simple: I only do my lips.
Hope this helps!
xo
Robin
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Thank you !! You where a beautiful chipmunk when you did your hole face 😂 And I think so too that It may be use full later as well (: ❤️
😍
Can't find the list of healthy chocolates.
I love dark chocolate more than alot of things in this life i cannot live without it
Yes. Yes. Yes. 👏👏👏
I can 100% relate. ❤️
How about trying to set up an interview with Brian Johnson talk about his new products,. That will probably get you over to 100k subscribers
Love this idea! I’ve been thinking to reach out to him for a while but did not consider specifically interviewing him about his products!
If this pans out, you get full credit! Hehe
❤️🙏
🌿👍🏽👍
Now imagine if they said matcha has heavy metals 😭😭
After this video I thinkI have toxic relationships with chocolate I love it and it hurts my health
Surprised you didn’t get a heavy metal blood test, given your curiosity, health inclinations, and history of consuming chocolate. Did you consider it ?
Thank you. Haha I love chocolate.
you and me both! 🍫❤️
th-cam.com/video/BLIGjiC8Cjs/w-d-xo.html Suddenly Dutch! :o
I forgot I was supposed to be speaking English 😅 the Spanish had me confused
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Haha! I had absolutely no idea you were Dutch, because your accent is flawless 🙆
Chocolate contains loads of sugar, stimulants, fyto toxins etc, so much for being a super food....
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Perhaps I should have used the word “cacao” - no sugar necessary to enjoy this stuff :)
Woke up and this made my day! Thank you for another video!
Thanks for tuning in!☀️❤️ have a great week!!
oh nice yeah you know
@#*! Is any food safe anymore? I was eating 1-2 squares of dark chocolate per day. Rethinking that now even with the brands low in both metals. I’d say something about just drinking more water but we know that usn’t any better. Lol
I am a Chocoholic
❤️ Chocoholics unite! 🍫🍫
Zo, vlekkeloos Engels zonder een Hollandse ondertoon, dat is best sterk.
Ik ben opgegroeid in Amerika. Dat helpt wel. :)
I *don't* drink... coffee.
God loves you so! John 3:16✝️
Wait.... you're Dutch?!
Found your chanel today and you cover some intresting topics! You are so pretty btw, will u be my Valentine? xD
Also toxic to cats!!
Boring
Thanks for your feedback. I can completely understand how this video is not everyone’s cup of cocoa 😋❤️🍫
