Team TFL, Dodge once offered a Dakota with an 8 foot bed. An affordable, back to basics, 'adequately' capable pickup would be a unique offering in the mid-size segment.
Yeah, as I recall, that was one of the key selling points when the Dakota came out. That said, even the 7' bed of the S10/S15 was really a great thing; it made for a really useful little hauler. I have been on the look out for one of those for some light farm work.
@@DrKellieOwczarczak As I recall, the Dakota and T100 were the two mid-size trucks that allowed the owner to shut the tailgate on a load of plywood sheets or 8 foot 2X4s.
24:35 Why doesn’t Ram bring the Rampage to US market with the now cancelled Jeep Cherokee drivetrain that way it will have 4wd low. Ram could compete quickly with Maverick.
Particularly enjoyed the discussion toward the end about simplifying (dash/console). I have two vehicles -- 2004 Honda Element (original owner): 160-hp, 4-speed auto, anti-lock brakes, 2 airbags, zero screens, no carpet. The only "luxuries" are a/c and heat. Terrific easy-to-park easy-to-drive urban SUV and true "utility" vehicle - easily removable rear seats allow transporting my Honda Monkey motorcycle, etc. If I could buy that Honda Element new today I'd be delighted. Only things I'd add: heated seats, heated steering (weren't Element options in '04) and couple more and better cup holders. My other vehicle is a 2023 Toyota Tundra. Limited TRD Off-Road, non-hybrid, non-digital display. Bought it for roadtrips/camping/towing. Love it. Love the 14" screen for the "panoramic view monitor" that you need to safely maneuver that big rig. Don't need a screen on my Element, just the 12v outlet to charge my phone for Google Maps. Wish my Tundra were simpler -- would like to delete the panoramic sunroof and various nanny-safety features (have turned off a couple of them). Auto companies are addicted to the higher-margin, more expensive luxury/tech-laden vehicles. There is an enormous middle-class/working class market yearning for simpler, less expensive new cars/SUVs and trucks.
In 2019 I considered a Gladiator because I had a budget in mind.. after a little shopping I realized I could get my dream truck (Power Wagon) for less than a Rubicon because of rebates. That should never be the case. 5 Years later and i'm still happy with my choice.
Heres the thing. I think a lot of us that toon into shows like this would love cheaper trucks and cheaper trims. We blame the manufacturers for not offering these as much. I dont think its actually a manufacturer problem though. We walk into the dealer with the thoughts of buying the base model, yet end up driving off in a higher trim model. These companies are into making money and if the base models made them more money they would build them.
When I was Toyota Tundra shopping I discovered, with great regret, that you cannot custom-order one so rather than wait possibly forever for what I wanted I ended up with an expensive panoramic sunroof (definitely did not want and don't use) and other spendy doo-dads I don't want.
About the Ram midsize truck and speaking of missing out, I hope they'll have Jeep in mind from the start... Jeep always arrive late at the party when everyone is going home... That midrange truck would be a good opportunity to bring back the Comanche. A king cab option would be cool for those of us willing to sacrifice a back seat to have a real bed that can actually haul stuff and gain some towing capability. Old compact trucks had 6 and 7 feet beds that allowed you to carry bikes, quads or snowmobiles; now you'd be hard pressed to load anything else other than one house appliance!
They already have the mid-size Gladiator which no one is buying. Why would they waste resources on another pickup that would be virtually the exact same size?
Does Kase have a personal channel, a blogg, Instagram or something where he documents his projects and such? I would like to follow that LandRover V8 LS -swap journey. Sounds like a cool project!
Canoo was my favorite electric truck design, and that's why I'm looking forward to the new Telo truck coming in 2026. The founders of Telo talked about one of the reasons for the failures of EV startup companies is that they tried to start with mass production, which is extremely expensive. Telo will start with low production numbers built by a contract manufacturer. Starting with small production numbers will reduce cost, and it's easier to make changes/improvements to the design after receiving customer feedback. I think Andre should put down a deposit on the Telo. He won't have to worry about losing his $152 deposit (one dollar for each inch of length) because the deposit is fully-refundable. The founders of Telo don't invest the money from customer deposits into the company. The money from your deposit is placed in a special account and can be returned at any time if you change your mind.
Loving the new talk setup! I agree on the screen rant. I do not want to pay thousands more to have less buttons! There is no way buttons cost more than screens for things like air con up/down, radio up/down, lights on/off, etc.
TFL’s best combination for sure. Andre and Case just seem like guys guys, who like trucks, and approach things from a very logical and laid back perspective
I think that if the 6 seater full size trucks were offered in a higher trim they would do really well. A 6 seater truck is very useful. What do you think?
Aww, I had hopes for Canoo. I have relatively little interest in EVs overall, but I would wheel one of their truck buggy things as they looked interesting and had some promising outlooks on the segment.
Speaking of the RamCharger. When it does eventually come out the important test for people towing cross country is how does it tow after the battery has been depleated and its relying on the motor to charge. We'll need to see sn ike gauntlet test in this situation.
Will agree on the screens, I purposely looked for the Ram 2500 with the 8" screen vs the 12" Prefer to muscle memory when I want to change the temps/radio... Also, would hope they would make the Dakota compare with Rangers vs the Mavericks...
I have owned over 15 vehicles in my life and just Fyi, I swear on this Product to Help my engines perform better, smoother and less stressful. I highly recommend the Tornado air product. You should try to show its Value n Performance, please.
I agree with Kase when he was talking about all the screens in trucks being a misunderstanding about what customers want. But I disagree with his comment about double din car stereos. I just bought a single din Nakamichi CD player from Ebay for my 2016 Canyon. You guys on TFL have been saying that people want technology in vehicles based on sales numbers. But I think car manufacturers are sabotaging the design/features of the cheaper models to force people to spend more money to get the features thay want. In 2016 I went on the GM website to "build" my idea of the perfect Canyon. I wanted a V6 engine and a manual transmission but the website wouldn't let me choose those options. When I picked manual transmission it automatically chose a 4-cylinder engine and the 6-cylinder was only available with an automatic. I think car manufacturers have enough information about their customers to know what people really want and put those features on the most expensive trims. Is GM incapable of building a manual transmission strong enough to handle the power of a V6 or do they know that nobody wants a manual with a 4-cylinder? Then when nobody buys a truck with a manual and under powered 4-cylinder the car manufacturer can say that based on sales numbers customers don't want a manual transmission. In 2016 the 2 features I wanted on my Canyon were heated side mirrors for winter and 18-inch rims so I would have better selection of tire height, width, and load rating. However, the heated mirrors and 18-inch rims were only available on the SLT which was the second highest trim level and came with technology that I didn't want. I bought a 2016 Canyon with a manual transmission and even though I hate the 4-cylinder an engine swap is the easiest way to get the truck that I want. I bought 18-inch SLT rims from a salvage yard and they didn't tell me I couldn't put SLT rims on my Base model Canyon they just sold me what I wanted. I bought an older truck because I would rather give my money to salvage yards and the aftermarket because they actually listen to their customers. Most aftermarket companies were started by a car or truck enthusiast who couldn't get what they wanted from the car manufacturers and built it on their own. Then when other people wanted the same item it was turned into a business. If car manufacturers listed to what their customers wanted and built it for them the aftermarket wouldn't exist. I could buy SLT heated mirrors but since none of the car manufacturers make towing mirrors for mid-size trucks I will need aftermarket mirrors. I think it's stupid for car manufacturers to sell a "towing package" to customers when they don't make towing mirrors for every truck they build
There’s a vocal few that affect the internet. Those that can afford a brand new vehicle, aren’t happy with truck prices, but they are working & don’t have time to sit on the net complaining. 😮😮. I do so, but I’m retired. I can afford new trucks, many, many if I want, instead I have many, many classics. I’m out of room now so am capped at just over 40. I DID recently buy a new (and overpriced) truck in a 2024 Ranger XLT FX4 2.7 V6. It far and above exceeds my expectations of it as well. The content is huge and no, I didn’t consider the XL. I like the XLT as a mid priced option. The Lariat was definitely expensive, but my friend bought a 2.3 litre Ranger Lariat for only about $1,000 more than my 2.7 XLT as the V6 is a pretty expensive option! 😊😊. I have tuned it now & it’s a very quick & well balanced truck. Definitely agree the cost of the Trail Boss package is not worth it. Spend $500 on the G80 option for the locking differential and it’s equally as capable!! 😂😂.
The Ram RamCharger might look complicated, but it really shouldn't be in theory. The EV system should be its own system. And EVs in general are known to be much simpler than any ICE vehicle. And are much more reliable with basically zero maintenance. The gas engine has one purpose now and that's to generate electricity. No transmission, torque converter, transfer case, etc. If the gas engine stops working, no biggie. Just get to your destination and figure it out.
I am not a fan of autonomous driving vehicles. It makes me fearful that a vehicle like that will cause an accident. I agree with Kase, the screens in vehicles that go from one end to the other are not necessary. A friend of mine had a backup camera in her Lexus sedan, she used it to back out of parking spot, as well as looking backwards to get out. As she was pulling out slowly from the parking spot, a driver in a mustang came at full speed and ripped the bumper off her car! When she came back to the office, you could see two pieces of Styrofoam that once held the bumper. The bumper was in the trunk. My friend told me "Don't use your backup camera because it's a distraction!" It was horrible to see.

Kinda seeing darkness for the Gladiator. As you guys pointed out, Plenty of opportunities, yet no solutions. Pentastar is lacking compared to the competition, and 4xe (with the 2.0L) is just not suited for this vehicle. If it worked, they would have had it on the market over a year ago. Unless they can shoehorn the new TTV6 in there, the only option is to go with 5.7L or continue to let the product wither on the vine. Dakota 2.0 will likely allow the new Hurricane I6 to fit and be a great truck, further sabotaging the JT. Feeling some DeJa'Vu, just like Dakota sales gutted the Commanche.
I keep looking at the Wrangler but I need more payload. Specifically, I would put a small camper on it and go OUT THERE. Obviously, a 4xE is a city car; which is not what the Wrangler was originally designed for. The Pentastar is dependable. Don't mess with things that work well.
They should have already released the 4xe gladiator. Name one other manufacturer that has a plug in hybrid truck. I think that opportunity has passed by now though
The 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 was perfect. All it needed was the 8spd Automatic. All the available options were perfect for the price. Now Ram, Ford, and Chevy priced their trucks off the market. Let them rot. Let them all rot.
In 2019 I put $1000 down on the Bollinger truck and me realizing after two years it probably wasn’t going to happen. I asked for my thousand dollars back and got it.
Ram can bring that truck to USA now wow new plant is being built in United States to build a truck you’re allowed to do that. They don’t have to wait. They can bring it right now… also one of my friends he’s a manager of Nissan dealership local saying Nissan is coming back with a hardbody truck version. he saying that manual transmission automatic four-wheel-drive four-cylinder engine and maybe a diesel four cylinder engine that they’re show off in one of the trucks before. And supposed to start at $20,000. And have up to 7 foot B.
The cost of all new vehicles are completely out hand. The quality isn't there, the interests rates ain't there, and failure rates are extremely high per production numbers. Another thing dealing with EV's the numbers af interested people that want an affordable long range vehicle out number the loud mouthed ICE equipped vehicles people. EV motors and electronics are becoming more efficient and durable. I've repaired military equipment that has electronics that survived explosive impacts, negligence, and other tortuous things. The EV's electronics should be built closely mimicking military electronics. Range extenders can use propane, LPG, and natural gas to lower emissions heavily. Have a inexpensive carbon scrubber built into the exhaust system
Complexity (TECHNOLOGY) is all well and fine for the revenue of dealerships. When it comes to technology as a consumer, when technology seriously f'ks up, the consumer is just along for the ride. Recently, almost 3 months ago now, technology took over the throttle on my truck. It went wide open throttle, 105 mph, on the interstate when morning rush hour traffic was starting to build. When I joined my fire dept back in 2010, when I was sworn in, I took an oath to SAVE AND PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY. So when I was "along for the ride" when technology to over my throttle, I had one choice in order to save life and property, it ALMOST cost me life. I was trapped in my burning truck with a broken ankle. I have a fractured right ankle, reinjured my left ankle, 6 broken ribs, broken nose, fractured left wrist, 2nd degree burns on my hands, face, and head....ALL IN THE NAME OF TECHNOLOGY....ALL IN THE NAME OF COMPLEXITY..... ALL MANDATED BY PEOPLE WHO DONT GIVE A FLYING LEAP ABOUT US, THE CONSUMER......THE FEDERAL FRIGGIN GOVERNMENT This is coming from someone who nearly lost his life thanks to the complexity, MOST of the complexity, technology, DOES NOT belong behind the wheel, the biggest being self driving or full autonomous driving vehicles...because when technology, the complexity f'ks up, we're just along for the ride, and someone is going to get seriously injured like me, or worse. Again, this is coming from someone who was nearly killed, while I enjoyed the responsiveness and the power of my hemi, technology, still doesn't belong in the drivers cabin. I believe that had my throttle still been cable operated, wide open throttle would not have happened. I'm very thankful to be here to be able to grow old with my wife, to share my experience of what happens or could happen when complexity f'ks up. Just my thoughts. Thanks
The midsize Ram truck has been talking about it forever and nothing to show for it I do not believe it until it's actually shown instead of talking about it.
I think if Ram wants a midsize truck in the market, the best way for them to actually compete is…HERE ME OUT. Scale the TRX down to the size of a midsize truck so we get that aggressive look, wonderful interior, great suspension and capabilities AND let the hurricane engine be the only engine option for it.😳 Try to convince me that, that wouldn’t be an awesome experience or a truck that wouldn’t destroy the midsize market in every area.👌 (To bad Stellantis doesn’t have the brain power to think of this)
Are they just killing off the Dodge brand? Unintentionally or not they're just setting up for RAM to be the only one to survive. I mean Alfa and Fiata are gonna die soon enough in the states

“We’re sad people didn’t pay more for a truck in an auction”
It’s called a reserve. Set a higher one 🤷♂️
From what I have heard this auction was all no reserve.
I keep looking at the Wrangler but I need more payload. Specifically, I would put a small camper on it and go OUT THERE. Obviously, a 4xE is a city car; which is not what the Wrangler was originally designed for. The Pentastar is dependable. Don't mess with things that work well.
I meant Gladiator. All these "mid-sized" trucks have too little payload. The Tacoma is especially bad.
@@captainpaddy1524 My "full-size" 2023 Toyota Tundra also has meager payload.
Watching great discussion while a TV commercial is showing vehicles with “crab walk”. Did anyone really ask for that feature?
That young man looks like Adam Scott from step brothers
Less screens
What happened with canoo was their CEO taking private jet trips totalling over 7 figures and billing it to the company.
They should have already released the 4xe gladiator. Name one other manufacturer that has a plug in hybrid truck. I think that opportunity has passed by now though
The Ford Ranger has it in overseas markets
To me reverse cameras are cheap insurance ,especially with the ram stop feature
The 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 was perfect. All it needed was the 8spd Automatic. All the available options were perfect for the price. Now Ram, Ford, and Chevy priced their trucks off the market. Let them rot. Let them all rot.
Sad news. I really like Canoo. 😟
They want more affordable trucks, but they wanna keep all the content or most of it.😊
Unfortunately the market keeps agreeing with you.
Canoo Pickup looks like VW T3 DoKa
A passenger has a phone or tablet, why put in another screen?
Surprised the e100 didn't bring more value....I'm not into EV but even i woulda paid more for that truck.
Why don't they really take the lead and put a American made diesel engine in it and maybe ask questions like who can make the best diesel for them
The cost of all new vehicles are completely out hand.
ALL MANDATED BY PEOPLE WHO DONT GIVE A FLYING LEAP ABOUT US, THE CONSUMER......THE FEDERAL FRIGGIN GOVERNMENT
This is coming from someone who nearly lost his life thanks to the complexity, MOST of the complexity, technology, DOES NOT belong behind the wheel, the biggest being self driving or full autonomous driving vehicles...because when technology, the complexity f'ks up, we're just along for the ride, and someone is going to get seriously injured like me, or worse.
Thanks
I don’t like self drive or driver assist tech. I’m a driver & want to drive my truck I don’t even use cruise control.
The midsize Ram truck has been talking about it forever and nothing to show for it I do not believe it until it's actually shown instead of talking about it.
Tesla should buy Cannoo... or someone else.
Mid size dodge trucks won’t sell , they want big Hemie loud gas burning goodness
2 years is too late. They need models right now that will sell like hotcakes. They don't have 2 years.
2027 launch date for Dakota? Ram might not exist by then.
Good info, but very boring to watch. It is more enjoyable to see more vehicles and the features rather than just seeing the studio.
I think if Ram wants a midsize truck in the market, the best way for them to actually compete is…HERE ME OUT.
Scale the TRX down to the size of a midsize truck so we get that aggressive look, wonderful interior, great suspension and capabilities AND let the hurricane engine be the only engine option for it.😳 Try to convince me that, that wouldn’t be an awesome experience or a truck that wouldn’t destroy the midsize market in every area.👌 (To bad Stellantis doesn’t have the brain power to think of this)
That would be cool. BUT, the price will go towards EV cost offsets. Price would be north of $75k if not $85k.
Yeah..another truck priced too high.
Are they just killing off the Dodge brand? Unintentionally or not they're just setting up for RAM to be the only one to survive. I mean Alfa and Fiata are gonna die soon enough in the states
Ram will not do this lust ;ike their vaporware Electric truck.
We really came to watch Roman Complain like a nagging wife about cars…… this is getting old
If people wanted electric trucks those companies wouldn't go belly up...
The EPA and other government regulations are forcing the flip towards electric vehicles. The majority of consumers don't want or need EVs.
The thumbnail doesn’t say 💩 about a damn canoo! 🙎🏾♂️🤬🤦🏾♂️
No Nathan and his girl truck or bad hot takes
