RIP makes the fastest way for a novice to get to a indermidate level. He understands linner progression better then any other trainer. Once you become a intermediate you have to tailor your programing to your recovery and stressful lifestyle, which isnt easy. His grey book is the beat by far.

I have been waiting for this review, thanks for it. Great thing about Rippetoe and his program is that he made it available for wide group of people, especially elderly adults. As a person he is controversial but at least honest and expressing his opinion loud and clear. It is up to us to agree or not but at least we know what is his position.

Echoing the others here to say that while Rippetoe is controversial, he's done so much for the strength community. Starting Strength was the first strength training book I ever owned, and although I had fully moved on from it 1-2 years later, it helped lay part of my foundation after transitioning from endurance sport.

    • @gjmjblevins

I think he impacted a lot of us - I was already well into my lifting before I was made aware of the program but purchased and read the book - it was part of the starting point for my own education in powerlifting. Blessings

      Why is he controversial?

    • @martystrasinger3801
      @martystrasinger3801 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@DavidVingTsunI have several thoughts on that. One is that people don’t see the word “starting” in starting strength. The program never claims to be for elite-level, competitive lifters but people make the assumption it is. Another is that the program spells out the details of the lifts in great detail, and some who have a few years of lifting under their belt are not happy with the thought that their lifting form can be improved. One more is that, with social media influencers having a certain look to them, since Rippetoe doesn’t have that look then he must not be a good coach which is pretty faulty logic. And his occasional statements on other topics, such as politics, economics and the environment have a tendency to alienate folks who have different views on those topics.

@@DavidVingTsunmost of it comes from the thought that “his program will make you fat” I don’t think he’s that controversial in the strength training community, it comes more from the 160 lbs divas who work out to have abs because they don’t have an interesting enough personality for women to want to talk to them without the abs

I started off with Starting Strength. I really liked it as a beginner. Then I went to the Texas method. That was good too. Then 5/3/1. Loved that one too. Then I went to Prilepins chart and worked that for several years. I would never have known about that chart or training method if you wouldn't have done a video on it years ago. After running these programs through their full course and my potential I've moved to conjugate. Which seems to me to be the logical progression. Capitalize on the newbie gains with Starting Strength. Capitalize on the intermediate gains with 5/3/1. After that you're going to have to figure out what your body reacts best to and what you can tolerate as a lifter.
Thanks for your videos Garrett Blevins. I really enjoy the ones on programming. When people ask me about Prilepins chart I still direct them to your video...

This program also works best if you have a training partner or coach to spot you on those grindy 5ths reps. Micro plates also help. 5 pounds every time isn’t gonna happen at a certain point especially with strict press.

I have used his novice (advanced novice at this point and considering a move to texas method) program to recover from a long time of not lifting and rehab from a pretty nasty injury (grade 3 pec tear where my tendon has been replaced by an achilles tendon from a cadaver). I have used this for the past year and a month. I have been at the novice phase for so long due to some intentional slowing down of progress (I am 51 years old) but am still making progress with the advanced NLP. I do not bench press too often and substitute incline press in its place (skittish with recovered pec).
At 51 and 225lbs I can OHP 217.5 x3x3, incline press 255x5, squat 450 x5, and DL 475x5. I can not recommend this program enough for a person returning to lifting after a long lay off or injury. From what it has done for my son, it looks like it is also fantastic for a full on novice as well. As a note, I did adjust the volume with the squat at around 9 months in as I felt the volume was a bit rough at 51.

Starting Strength was the program that got my Squat from 50KG to 135KG for a 5s. My deadlift from 60KG to 150KG for 5, my Bench from a measley 40KG to a less measley 80KG, and my press from 20KG to 60KG singles. The linearity and simplicity of the program are, in my humble opinion, essential for a novice to progress.

@@timhale4779 That would have been a more relevant question if I had hired a coach to teach me, but doing it myself it took way longer than it should have, 1.5 years.
      Biggest mistakes:
      1. Not eating enough
      2. Bad form
      3. Not doing the program
It's so easy for form-creep to occur, so constant monitoring is vital.

Thanks you! Could you give me some recommendations?
I used to do powerlifting 15 years ago, also later but only briefly.
I want to resume training, but I’m wondering how to start as correctly as possible.
My weight is 120 kilograms, but I don't look fat. I don't care about my weight, but my knees hurt because I’m too heavy, and my body is not trained. Also, during training, my shoulder was injured in the overhead press, after which I pumped up my shoulder with light weights to heal the injury. While I was training, my shoulder didn't bother me.
What result do I want to achieve? Become strong, get rid of joint pain.
How would you recommend starting? 4 week cycle, with very light weights in basic exercises for 20-30 repetitions, also accessories and cardio?
    Thank you in advance !

I am 32 yrs old, 160lbs and have been working out doing lots of isolated exercises for about 1 year. After I started to understand Rippetoes advices and his opinion on what training really is, i am really tempted to follow his program and leave my "bodybuilding" exercises behind. I started lifting this week and these are my loads :
3 sets of 5 reps squatted 140lbs and deadlifted approx. 180lbs and benchpressed 160lbs
What are the most important advices you guys would give me ? And what are te most important sources of studying and materials you would reccomend me ? Thank you so much

I’m now lifting from the floor and working my way towards my rack pull max. The overhead press was the first exercise I stalled on at 115. I kept at it and I’m at 135 now. I turn 50 next week. @@uglytuco3829If you start out lighter than you think you should on each of the lifts, you really won’t get too sore as your body will slowly adapt to the lifts over weeks as you add weight to the bar. I wouldn’t worry too much about the soreness. I got sore initially when doing squats 3 times a week, but that’s because lifting was new to me. After the first week or two, I would sometimes get sore once the weights started to get heavy, but not as bad as when I was an absolute beginner.
