Meng Jiang Nv was a legendary character during the Qin Dynasty who went to the Great Wall in search of her husband, a conscripted laborer of the Wall. She learned that he had died of hunger and exhaustion while building the Wall. She cried so much, causing the Great Wall to collapse, then found his deceased body in the rubble. She then buried her husband and jumped into the sea out of grief.

A beautiful but sad song, for a woman who lost her husband and everything in life. She weeped so much that her cry shattered the Great Wall, a monument forcefully built on the backs of innocent commoners and lead to many of their deaths. Humanity is very good at oppression 😢

Many of our new generation Chinese do not know who is Meng Jiangnu. Madam White Snake, The Butterfly Lovers, Cowherd and the Weaver are still told n retold but Meng Jiangnu seldom mention. A very sad tale. Not only husband of Meng Jiangnu died building the Great Wall, there were thousands died too. Hope China build a memorial tomb of those who died under the Great Wall of China during the time of emperor Shi Huang Ti.
I haven't find any native Chinese don't know these folks.
I am not Chinese but I have a deep love and respect for Chinese culture. I have heard this story before, but not this song. What a lovely job she does telling the sad story through song.
