This action-packed classic never really got its due, but it's one of the most memorable NES games I've ever played. Great stuff!

For a game running on the NES, this is amazingly impressive in pretty much every single way. And some of the stuff they are doing within the many limitations of the NES is just awe-inspiring.

The design reminds me of Batman: The Video Game and Spy Hunter. Weren't both of those released by Sunsoft? American Sammy really shows their sources of inspiration.

Now this...has GOT to be one of the best-looking NES titles out there. Considering all that has probably been said about the presentation, I agree with the consensus. The cutscenes and backgrounds are _really_ well done. It's a 90s-era NES game, and it shows. Even the writing is solid, lacking a lot of the awkward Engrish of most old games from this era.
Any game that went for a multi-genre approach like driving AND platforming was pretty ballsy by design. But here, they both work! Impressive. Plus, I didn't expect jiangshi to be a common enemy, but here we are.

Lmao ikr? It's like, wait - did I start up Phantom Fighter or Mario Land by mistake? Maybe Hsien Ko is just trying to chill? Right along with her, I always questioned those ... spiky turtle men (?) in the first level. They're like a weird hybrid of a koopa troopa and Tokka from TMNT.

Looking back this is one of the most underrated NES games ever. I know it came out late and takes a lot of inspiration from Ninja Gaiden, but it’s still really amazing with its cutscenes and gameplay. And to think it was on the NES ❤

This game was really ahead of it's time by having multiple genre in one game. Also a bit shame this was a one off game, as it seems like Vic Tokai wanted to make this a franchise series

Loved this game. So many docent aspects of other gameplay form other games mixed into one. Has epic music, interesting levels and enemies, and an actual decent storyline (which was missing form many NES titles). This is a top 10 of the 8-bit era

Holy moly.....Vice: Project Doom (or Gun-Dec, as it was called in Japan) is an awesome game. I would even put this at number 1 in my Top 10 underrated NES games (and I would even put at number 3 in my Top 10 NES list of all time).
I mean, the music is SO awesome (in Vice: Project Doom/Gun-Dec). My favorite music (in Vice: Project Doom for the NES) is in Stage 6 & 8 (Stage 11-2's music is my second favorite music in the game). Honestly....it was kind of difficult to choose a favorite (out of all of Vice: Project Doom's music) because ALL of it is awesome. After listening to all of it, though (through listening to it a LOT), I decided to choose Stage 6-2 & 8-2's music as my favorite music in Vice: Project Doom for the NES.
The inspiration is quite varied (and heavy) - not that that's a bad thing. I mean, you can duck and run (which reminds me of Shinobi for the Arcade), you have a laser whip (which reminds of Castlevania), a pistol (which I almost NEVER use, aside from one genre and MAYBE the first part of the final boss) and grenades (which I sometimes use in the platform stages, depending on the situation at hand, but during the third genre, I ALWAYS use the grenades and pistol).
Stage 6-2 reminds me of the stages (that you climb vertically) in Shinobi (Arcade), because of the fact that it functions pretty similar to Shinobi's climbing stages.
Stage 7-2 also reminds me of Toad Man's stage in Mega Man 4 (NES)/Mega Man (Game Gear), because of the fact that you are in a sewer and rats and other stuff attack you and the fact that the water can push you.
Oh, and the 3 genres (shoot em up, platformer and rail shooter) are all executed perfectly.
The controls are also perfect and the challenge level is just right - not B.S. difficult, but not boringly easy, either.
Wow......there's a LOT of variety in the enemy selection here (in Vice: Project Doom). Some are weird, but I like the enemy variety anyway. Also, enemy types NEVER repeat more than 4 times (at most). Most of the enemies repeat 2-3 times in the game - that's it.
The plot is on par with the Ninja Gaiden games (although probably even better, due to the world going to heck, because of the main big bad character).
I found out (through lots of playing) that some enemies have a "resistance" to certain weapons (meaning that some enemies take more hits to go down with certain weapons). With the laser whip, most of the enemies die in 1 hit (although a few die in 2 hits - at most).
Also, this game has infinite continues - so you should be able to eventually get through this game (through perseverance).
Here are my scores (for Vice: Project Doom)
    Plot (10/10)
    Control (10/10)
    Challenge: Medium
    Level Design/Game Design (10/10)
    Music & Sound (10/10)
    Graphics (10/10)
    Final Score (50/50)

Played this on the Switch for the first time. I couldn’t put it down. It’s nice that the switch lets you save the game as you go. Or else, I could have spent hours playing it. Very nostalgic… the gameplay reminds me of an influence, or combination of: Spy Hunter, Contra, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, and Castlevania all mashed into one. Very ahead of it’s time… and the story line was nice too. I’d say this game is a 10 for the fun factor. It’s very enjoyable killing the big bosses at each stage.

Vice: Project Doom has a LOT of inspiration taken from various Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System video games (which isn't a bad thing, because it does the inspiration a LOT of justice). I actually managed to get the cartridge (only the cartridge) of Vice: Project Doom for $4.95 from a defunct GameXChange store near where I live (which because defunct 10-15 years ago due to GameStop being across the street). I will say that the GameXChange store I went to was a good place to buy games, because you can get a free game (once you buy 10 games and you show them the paper where they stamped the point-of-sale stuff with the 10 games and it's ANY game of the pick that they have). I miss that GameXchange store, because they sold retro games. Oh well, I guess Amazon's my best bet to buy video games.
I love this game so much that I would put it on my top 10 list (because of the graphics, game design, level design, the decent-to-good plot, and even having THREE genres (which is a rarity for any video game because I don't see it THREE or more genres on video games very often - let alone the three genres being as good as they are). Great controls, great graphics and great music/sound are also part of this package. Seriously, if you die, it's 100% your own fault - no glitches or anything like that. Even the enemies and traps are very varied, too (from birds to giant wasps to even those guys that follow you and can shoot and duck). When I bought a copy of Vice: Project Doom for $4.95 from the defunct GameXChange store near where I live and turned this on for the first time, I was REALLY impressed with the graphics.
Then I became EVEN MORE impressed with the fact that the 1st level is a shooter. At this point, I was so impressed to the point that I wanted to play it even more. After I beat the boss, then I was even more impressed with the 2nd level being a platformer. I said to myself, "there's 2 genres"? (Keep in mind, I didn't know that there was going to be a THIRD genre since I just completed the 1st level for the first time and I was just doing the 2nd level for the first time). Then I became even more impressed with the fact that you can RUN AND DUCK (which is VERY useful, because you run and duck under certain projectiles and throw grenades, laser whip and shoot with your pistol). (Remember that Super Castlevania IV wasn't out yet, so this and Shinobi on NES were the only 2 games (that I remember) where you can move and duck).
After I beat the 2nd and 3rd levels, I was doing 4-1 (keep in mind, I was ALREADY impressed with this game to begin with, because of the graphics and other stuff in this game), when all of a sudden, the game gives me a rail-shooting stage (in 4-2)! At that point, I thought to myself, "there's 3 genres"? This sent my impression of this game up to the sky and beyond. Seriously, how many NES games have THREE or more genres? Not very many NES games have THREE genres and I would be hard-pressed to find any games that does 3 genres as well as Vice: Project Doom does (well, except for Robin Hood and the Prince of Thieves on NES - that game does it's multiple genres pretty well, too, but that's the exception and not the rule).
After that, I was so impressed by this game that I was going to put Vice: Project Doom in my Top 10 NES games (which I haven't done that yet, but I'm kinda lazy). Then I did the 5th and 6th levels (which I still liked a lot, because the level design is just that good) and then I went to the first part of the 7th level. Wow - I was REALLY impressed by the parallax scrolling here, because of one thing - correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't NES incapable of doing parallax scrolling natively (or at least that it's very hard to do)? Plus, Stage 7-1 reminded me of Ninja Gaiden 2's train stage (again, because of the parallax scrolling). After I did the 8th, 9th, 10th and the first part of the 11th level, then I went to the mansion stage. Now I was impressed before, but Stage 11-2 sounds rather scary due to the music that the developers made for that stage (plus the clown enemies are in this stage, too). 11-2 is probably the hardest part of this game, but it's not that difficult. The music in 11-2 was intended to be scary (because of the clowns and the mansion and the freaky merman enemies that seem to pounce on you) and I felt like they pulled that off successfully. After I beat 11-2, I was confronted by the owner (or whatever he's supposed to be) of the mansion. Then I fought him (as the player character, obviously - I used my pistol on him - since he has a pistol attack and a laser whip attack).
Then I found out (after beating him) that he had a second, more monstrous form! Oh boy - I was easily impressed (by the parallax scrolling). Now, he stomps around 2 times (trying to home on in stomp on you). Then he does 6 projectiles (3 on the left side of him, 3 on the right side of him) and I jumped over the lowest projectile coming towards me (since the others were high enough that they went over my head while standing up). Then he does 2 hand swipes under him (regardless of whether you're under him or not, one after the other). In this fight, I usually use grenades (since it's easier to stay out from under him), although you CAN use the laser whip when you are under him - it's just harder to so (because of the hand swipes you have to avoid). However, he's not too hard, either (just like the rest of the bosses in this game). He is the hardest boss in this game (because of the fact that you can't just slash-slash-slash-slash him to death (unlike most of the bosses in this game), but even he has a recognizable pattern too.
However, I have noticed one thing in this game when I do play it: the grenades do regenerate after the number of grenade goes down to zero (after a few seconds, that is) to 2 per time your grenades go down to zero (it's always 2). I believe the pistol can regenerate some (I think 5) bullets, too, if that goes down to zero as well (although I never used the pistol in this game except for the rail-shooting stages and the first phase of the final boss). Usually I save the grenades and bullets for the rail-shooting stages and since certain enemies ALWAYS give you certain items, you can take advantage of this by having the enemy re-spawn and get that item again and again and again (infinitely), but in the final boss's second phase, I just chuck grenades at his neck/head like it's nothing. I suppose I could have used the grenades and bullets a lot more often (since every G icon ALWAYS gives you 5 grenades and the B icon ALWAYS gives you 10 bullets), but nope, I treated the grenades and bullets like some hoarders hoard games (or like how people treat ammo in 3D shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D).
Anyway.....after I beat the second phase of the final boss, I was impressed YET AGAIN by the ending. I mean, with the clouds scrolling and the final boss dying and stuff like that, who wouldn't be impressed? However, I believe that Hart is the clone of the suspiciously-familiar-looking-like-Hart-in-a-white-suit person (because one of the cut-scenes says something similar to that). The fact that the plot is good (and that's something I usually don't care about in a NES game - unless it's a RPG or Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and 3 or this game) also makes me happy. Oh, and trust me, I'm not even done talking about this game yet (despite this comment having EIGHT paragraphs in it).

TRIVIA: In Japan, this game is known as Gun-Dec, and the Japanese boxart openly has a drawn, copyright infringement-circumventing picture of Bruce Willis on it (taken from one of his late '80s/ early '90s action movies, I guess; I don't know which one). This is it, by the way:

Got this game soon after it came out -- in part due to the press -- and didn't regret it. It's a really impressive NES game, with bright colorful graphics, fun gameplay, a decent story, a good mix of gameplay modes, and a just right feel to the difficulty. Weakest part of the game I'd actually argue is the music. Not only is it just average, but it cuts out when too many sounds are playing. (For the record, I really enjoyed Robin Hood a lot also)

I know you mentioned _Ninja Gaiden_ as an influence, but would I be wrong in saying the platforming stages are also reminiscent of Sunsoft games like _Batman_ ? Along with everything you and prior commenters have mentioned, it's like they took all the good ideas from the best of the NES library and put them together in one title.

Awesome game I didn’t hear of this one as a kid. I had a ton of games but my favs were Mega Man and Mario as a kid. If I knew back then what I know now I would have gotten the best. Sadly back then which strangely we appreciated more, we didn’t have internet to learn and obtain easily these games. We solely depended on magazines, kids word of mouth during recess or after school and our parents buying us games during holidays bdays or good grades and when doing that, we took chances on games by looking at box art or magazine reviews or worse, our parents picking a game for you. Sounds dreadful but Good times honestly. Platform action Games that are similar in style, music and gameplay like this rare gem are:
    Power blade 1 and 2
    Batman
    Bionic Commando
    Contra
    Dragon Fighter
    Kabuki Quantum fighter
    Kickmaster
    Journey to Silius

I owned this one when it came out. It looked so alluring. And I really loved the premise, the cutscenes, the style, and the 3 types of gameplay. Sadly, I never got very far before I put it down. I just never got into these NES games where you're always in some weird, unidentifiable, industrial labyrinth full of odd little enemies. Like Sunsoft's Batman or Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (owned that one, too). Same deal. But it looks like a ton of fun if you can get into it.

    • @evilspin

Must be the age you were in and what you were into at the time. Cause you acknowledge it looks like fun yet strangely if you knew that then why didn’t you when you had it and didn’t care to play? Must be that at that age you didn’t value the game or style and or were into other styles or system. You took it for granted. I also did that with certain games and now as older I play it more often than the others I did of the time.

    • @frozenaorta
      @frozenaorta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@evilspin I may have been 9 or so? Definitely not into any other systems, since the NES was pretty much everything in the US right then. Of course the Genesis and SNES dominance was right around the corner. I think I always WANTED to love these action platformers, but couldn't get into them. Stuff like Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania were all things I'd enjoy at a friend's, but never want to own or rent. You might be right about my tastes right then. I really enjoyed the more colorful "Nintendo-y" and Capcom games of the the era (Mega Man were the only action platformers I owned and loved). Of course, as I became a teen during the 16-bit era, I suddenly obsessed over fighting games and RPGs. Maybe I need to take another look at this one now in my late 30's. Cheers!

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Haha they're just the types of games i like to play is all. I'm pretty poor at new 3D games in comparison :) But by NES standards, I thought this was pretty easy.

@@NintendoComplete yeah, but I see that you beat the legendarily hard Silver Surfer. No easy feat. Not mention the Ninja Gaiden games.

You play a lot and end up memorizing monsters spawn point. I used to be a beast at this game, grenade are OP and they are the key to victory.

This game has Batman (NES) vibes and the style is also pretty similar. Are they related, by any chance?

Nope. I think this is more of a "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" kind of thing.

Nice game. In a league with Batman, Shatterhand and the likes. Too bad the music is pretty lame and annoying. It really detracts from the experience.

Meh. It's just a bad Ninja Gaiden clone attempt. The music is awful, the driving stages are beyond bad.
