Tarka's Prop Shaft Disconnects and Tries to Eat the Motor (Sailing w/the Litzenbergers Ep. 122)

  • We attempt to leave Vero Beach but as we approach the fuel dock a horrible sound comes out of the engine room. When we take a look we find the prop shaft has disconnected from the motor and the bolts are trying to rip apart the transmission. It's a bad deal.

Pickle, you're friggen epic. I was just telling my father, who for 50 years did excellent (finisher) construction, how you're a mechanical wizard on boats. And showed him a couple shots (without cursing, because my parents are sensitive) and the work you do. He's impressed too. Love it. Keep it up.

Oh my kids, another adventure in fixing the propulsion system successfully completed!Bravo kids, BRAVO! "Pickle" remained much calmer than he used to be and that is a very Good thing! Great team work!

You’ve been with us from the start so you know how many propulsion issues we’ve encountered 😂! Speaking of, almost every comment from the start has some level of belittlement to Spencer, curious about that, he’s a great sailor and husband, not sure if my editing paints him in a bad light or you just don’t like him, but remember we’re all here for a good time and a laugh 👍

Once again, Spencer’s marine grade crow bar saves the day. Great recovery!

...... laughing ..... can only imagine what went through your mind Spencer the first time you saw that movement, did you ask it if it felt ignored, was lonely ... I was also like don't put your finger in there Breena ..... you guys are going to be able to diagnose that engine and rebuild it soon faster than a Marine can strip down, clean and fire whatever weapon it is they are using these days .... must say impressed with the teamwork diagnosing and repairing, and in such close quarters .... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger ..... have fun be safe, save our oceans ......

Omg, ya'll! It's hard to watch such frustrating and tedious maintenance. I know if I had to do it I'd be sitting on the hard FOREVER! I think Spencer can fix anything! Lord, I need a drink!

You sure lucked out on that one. Glad there was no massive damage. Great job getting it fixed and back under way. Stay safe!

Yes, indeed! We we're super lucky it didn't happen in an inlet or bridge opening in the ICW or something!

Helpful hints for you. Put Blue Loctite on everything. Stainless can swedge itself together, seem tight but not be. Blue Loctite acts not only to lock threads but it let's you take stuff apart later if you have to. Do not rethread bolts. Seriously. If it rotates tighten it twice. If it rotates it should have an interference nut on it or at very least a spring washer. Next time you're in a Lowe's or Home Depot etc, buy a flex head 1/4" ratchet and a set of deep sockets. Even if to just run the nuts down and then tighten with the wrench. If it rotates tighten it twice. Get rid of the God damn hose clamp on the shaft. It might make you feel good but it won't do shit if the collar comes loose on the PYI dripless seal. Use a shaft zinc even if you have to cut it down. If it rotates tighten it twice. If you're ever in Maine I can retighten the head bolts and readjust your valves. Remember the classic boat sticker the marine people had on Long Island for years. White back round, black Helvetica font "Boats Suck" . Fair winds. Keep the water out, the crew in and the mast pointing more or less up.

It`s so easy to overlook one small detail and screw up an otherwise good job. When you guys started that job at 9:00PM and worked all night I thought something might have been overlooked, but you fixed it like a champ. Well done!

In case it comes up later, putting a threading die in a vise is asking for trouble. Hold it tight enough to use and it will distort and give you off size threads. Use a die wrench or in a pinch put it in a socket.

Hay Kids!! The problem with your transmission is not uncommon. Sure not having any oil in it is part of the problem but not the main cause of your wows. Easy fix: 1) you need to remove your prop. 2) remove your prop shaft. 3) turn the prop shaft 180 degrees. 4) re-install the prop shaft with the end that had the prop on towards the transmission. 5) re-install the prop on the end of the shaft that was formerly connected to the transmission. There you go!! Somewhere down the line your prop shaft was installed backwards. Be safe, be happy.

Where are you heading from N Carolina? Just wondering as I have my boat in the Chesapeake Bay Area (Virginia side) right now I’m from Maine but I’m trying to get things ready to head Somewhere warmer this winter with any luck and if anyone is letting Americans in. Get bored give a yelp I’d love to split a beer and I’ll be at the boat the first week of August and I’ll be there until all is done and ready. So that means for the rest of the summer and fall. You guys want to help I’ll buy the grub and beverages nothing to physical and major mostly new electronics etc.!😁seriously from a loyal fry, Keep on, keepin on🤞

Hey Thanks!! The boat is in Oriental and we took some time to fly to see family. We faced the same predicament; borders closing and not able to sail up to Canada (our original plan). We plane on sailing back down South in the fall, so maybe we can touch base then!! Keep us posted on what your up to and we'll try and cross wakes!

You didn’t “break anything”. Obviously Spencer was just testing the strength of the engine mounts! A very important thing to do.. 😂
    Nice work.

Ok....well this is usally an alignment issue that causes this...loctite maybe. Sure not connecting the bolts in your flex coupler is a bad thing, but...I've never seen a flex coupler like that...honestly it doesn't look like their is any play in it. A cheapy but better flex coupler is usually about $235 US and is a better looking design at a lot of marine stores. Check your motor mounts too....but the best investment my buddy and I have ever made is a Brunton's Sigma Drive. You are looking at between $500-$800 US. They have more play than the flex couplers and saved my buddy $27,000 in maintenance costs on hist twin engine motor yacht over three seasons. You can't hear as much noise from them...no more engine alignments..no more bad bearings...fewer shaft seal and cutlass bearing replacements...between the both of us the maintenance costs are reduced by tens of thousands. Check out sailing vessel Prisim's review. th-cam.com/video/tKvDYpJaaAY/w-d-xo.html

We're actually in the same boat yard as Prism and met them! Awesome people and they said the exact same thing! They really convinced us, so it's on the order list!

And......Rotate one of the coupler clamp bolts so the shaft is balanced You should have one nut opposite the other. Use Blue Loctite and....Tighten it twice. I get it only spins 1200 to 1500 rpm but it's still out of balance.

When you tighten a flange (round) bolt pattern tighten in a cross pattern. As in 4 bolts do every other one in stages untill all are same tention. I would use blue locktight on the threads. Yes I herd him say it a couple prayers. Remember Prayer is the original WIRELESS useit. Before and after all days, projects, journeys. Thanks smooth sailing.
