  • Short Sunderland Flying Boats take off from the Solent at full throttle early morning on ops out of RAF Calshot crossing The Solent past the Isle Of Wight. As the Short Sunderland was a flying boat, once its Pegasus radial engines reached take off speed it would be then planing across the water, the next problem was to break free from the suction (from Bernoulli's principle) of the water on the hull. This was partly helped by the "step" in the hull just behind the craft's centre of buoyancy at planing speed. The pilot would rock the craft about this point to try to break the downward pull of the water on the surface of the hull so it could get free and take off. In addition to this on very calm days it was often necessary to have a high speed launch (HSL) e.g. Type Two HSL or "Whaleback " powerboat to launch across the front of the aircraft to cause a break in the water flow under the aircraft to get it airborne. It was a matter of judgement of the boats crewmen to get the crossing close enough but not too close.

Absolutely love your videos. The short sunderland were stationed under 10 miles from where i lived as a child. They seemed to just clear the roof tops. Your video brought it all back. Thanks for that

@@SpitfireCGI Yes I saw quite a few old planes. Used to live in an area that had lots of WW2 airbases. I was born 12 years after the war so there were still quite a few still around those days
