  • The centerpiece of Kawai technology is their ground-breaking Millennium III Action featuring components made of ABS-Carbon-a composite material infused with carbon fiber. Because ABS-Carbon is incredibly strong and durable, these action parts can be made lighter without sacrificing strength. The result is a stronger, faster action that offers more power, better control and greater stability than conventional all-wood actions. Let's take a closer look at the Millennium III Grand Piano Action... #Kawai #MillenniumIII #PianoAction

My Kawai GL-30 has been just delivered and surprise, surprise, it sounds way better than in the showroom, I like its sound, it is warm and like a bell! No need for further preparation and voicing!

There's a lot of misinformation on the web about the Millennium III action - definitely worth trying and seeing for yourself.

6:15 "a guitar that does not have a solid wood top would not be worth spending a lot of money on" - actually guitars made out of carbon fibre do exist, and people seem to be quite pleased with the sound.

Great video! Why did Kawai choose to keep the actual hammer in wood? Is it because of the weight needed to make the hammer fall back faster? Thanks!

Kawai explains that in their website . The percussive elements of the piano ( hammer and keys) are in wood , because it is today the best material in piano for shock absorption. In particular the non linear shock that the hammer produces with the string is one of most important parameter of the sound . Today we haven’t found a material better than wood . Same for keys with the shock with the keybed

Millenium III action in acoustic and hybrid pianos is most definitely a heavy action. In Shigeru grand only it is nicely balanced. No surprises there. Any piano in the order of $80,000 and up plays the same way, that is, the way it is supposed to play. Not the "cheaper" uprights. If you are hoping for a finely regulated instrument by the dealer, you are up for a big surprise ... unless you know what to ask for before you write the check. From the manufacturer, to the dealer, to the technician, there is a tooth and nail fight to minimize costs and maximize profit. So, draw your own conclusions.

I chose a Kawai GL-30 mainly for its Millennium III action and the light touch of its keyboard; at its price point I was more confident to have a more reliable, solid, and innovative piano action. However, in terms of sound the Kawai hammers are not necessarily the ones I preferred, perhaps it is an issue of preparation of the GL-30 available in the showroom, perhaps my technician will improve the sound in the future, I wonder if the quality of the hammers may play an important role and different hammers can improve the sound.

Likely the piano just needs to get voiced. Call a tech and they can voice it to your preference.

We actually never hear that unless someone came from another store right before where a salesperson but that idea in their head. We keep a healthy selection of other brands and people often choose Kawai when they get to compare.

The Kawai Millennium III Piano Action is not offered on the very entry level pianos. Those at the VERY Entry Level / Low cost, have ABS Styran actions. It is not the same as Millennium III Piano Action. You a purporting to be an expert as well as a Kawai Dealer, you need to get the details correct too.

This is a great marketing strategy by Kawai! They made a cheaper plastic action and then sell it by use the "carbon" word instead of lightly reinforced plastic. For sure this action can work better and last longer, but mainly is CHEAPER to produce. The "carbon fiber" is a great material and usually related to high performance machines, BUT those extreme machines components uses layered carbon fiber fabric with epoxy resin on very expensive moulds that need to support extreme temperatures and pressure to made a single good piece, this is a very expensive process. The ABS reinforced with carbon fiber is just a common and cheap plastic piece, made by ABS pellets with little pieces of carbon fiber threads (like garbage of carbon fiber fabric) inside an inyection mould that can produce thousands and thousands of pieces of this action every day. Same process as any cheap plastic chinese toy for a children, most of plastic gears and screws on toys have this kind of reinforcements. To compare this action with a tennis racket or a expensive bicycle or a F1 car chassis just because also uses carbon fiber is like to compare a clothespin with a grandpiano, both uses steel and wood....
This action could be better? For sure! But mainly is CHEAPER to produce! Great work of Kawai designers, but even better work for kawai marketing guys!

@@michelprimeau4531 if you refer to the pieces of ABS-carbon, is easier and more effective to replace instead to fix them, but for shure the price of a replacement is more accord the total grandpiano price than the cost to produce that plastic (sorry, ABS-Carbon) piece.

i bet you are a yamaha player heard exact same crap in a yamaha store once i was in it. you may call it "plastic" but its gonna be more stable than your yamaha belive me i had an upright it did stay exactly in tune for 1 and half year. wood in the action should't be that much more expensive than the "plastic" seems like the old man that born whit the old stuff and keep staying in it you the type of guy that hate electric vehicles cause benzin is "better" soon your mc on your photo will sound like nothing cause its gonna be outdated when the electrics take over. but belive me kawai make steinways boston models so they must be good at making pianos ;)

@@BFHPET Hi! you suppose a lot! But unfortunately you are wrong on all... I wrote not based on any comments of any seller of no one brand, I wrote based on my personal knowledge of several years working as Product and Process development Engineer of many different industries, from wood furniture to real carbon fiber layered products and also many plastic components and his moulds. If you are capable to dismiss all your wrong preconcepts and try to read my previous comment again, maybe yo can understand that I recognize that this plastic action could be better, I hope you could... Later you can think what you need, or what your great supposing mind can do, but believe me that I like new things, it's exactly my work to be open to new technologies and even to develop some of that, but I also need to see when a company try to sell something cheaper as a great option, by the way, yamaha and many other brands do things like that, a lot more times than kawai... Yeah, if I'd made this video I'd have reviewed it, made notes, revised (and rehearsed) the script, and done another take (or two). This is all over the place. And, as others have said, too long. Also, I don't understand showing that model of a single key's action when you have the same thing right in front of you (you could have shown the end-on view, and played the actual action). And then you immediately cut to a *static* photo of that same single-key action so that we can't even see it move? Seeing stuff move is fun.

I personally don't like Kawai Millennium III Action. It's seems too light for me. I guess I'm one of the rare guy who like some push back when I press the key. I don't like playing keyboard either for the same reason. But that is purely personal. I don't play Bumblebee thing or any fast and furious piece. Maybe one day when I'll be more proficient I might change my mind.

Your statements concerning Pianos and or Guitars without wood sounding boards being worthless is itself a worthless statement. There are both High End Guitars and Pianos that have materials other than wood and perform just fine. Just like you video is trying to demonstrate that there could be something better than wood for a piano action, with modern material sciences (again, see Carbon Fiber) there can be composite materials that have superior performance to wood ones, and yes, even for sounding boards.
