Richard and I have been friends for a while now. He hasn't changed much in the time that I have known him, but he was a good guy in the first place.
The addition of a date makes a very handsome desk diver even more practical as an everyday piece. This watch doesn't excel in any area, but it has no obvious flaws either. But again I ask, what is your favourite $300USD everyday watch and what do you think of my possibilities? Cheers, JOMW

My favorite everyday watch is seiko sgg731p1. They cost about 150$. Light titanium watch with sapphire crystal and good water resistant is what I was looking for. And of course it's quartz watch for that price.

I picked up a Bulova Lunar Pilot new for $289 in October and it hasn’t left my wrist since. Before that I only wore divers. The Bulova is big but doesn’t wear big on my 7” wrist at all. Leather strap dresses up for formal, and I wear a NATO/NASA style Velcro for every day use. It just a great everyday watch. I love it, more than a lot of my autos. I love the story behind the watch too.

I’ll take the Zelos swordfish all day long over RL for 300. The Zelos is a legitimate 300m dive watch with amazing lume and no cheap push pins in the bracelet. It comes with a wooden box, and a leather strap as well. The RL can’t compete with that.

I have the 12-hour bezel model and actually really like the framing effect of the black bezel around the blue dial. That bezel style is generally underrated, too, I think. It can obviously be used as a poor man’s GMT, but it is also useful as a timer if you happen to need to keep track of hours rather than minutes. I’ve been sick for the past week and using it to track my medication. Turn the arrow to the hour hand whenever I take a dose and then when the hour hand hits 5 I know it’s time for another dose.

Great video, thanks. My favourite sub $300 watch (was £250) has got to be my Heimdallr custom made Vintage Mechanical Diver, a 6105 8110 homage which towers over every other 6105 8110 (including Seiko's and their Prospex re-issue) very traditional look without overdone blue AR coating or shiny ceramic bezel insert, opting instead for aluminium bezel insert and a domed sapphire crystal, the case finishing is of a much higher standard and it has a Swiss ETA 2824-2. Beautiful handset and applied logo & hour markers, the light play is exceptional on this piece. Gets more positive comments than any of my other watches. The RL bears a passing resemblence to Steeldive's SD1952, the handset is in same style, dial is similar too.

I have two. The automatic is an Invicta diver homage that's built like a tank. The watch I wear most frequently is an old basic three-hand Citizen EcoDrive titanium. I have fancier pieces than these two, but the Invicta and the Citizen get the most wrist time.

Jody, the Richard LeGrand looks amazing, very classy. But is it tough? I find myself always putting on my Orient Ray 2 Black PVD, looks the goods, goes well on multiple NATO's and beats the skx (sorry but it does) for features; it hacks, it handwinds. Insanely accurate too at about +4 P/day. I do fancy the RLG with the GMT bezel as a more dressy piece. Thanks again for another great vid, your advice is appreciated and your channel certainly a favourite.

    • @P_Ezi

      Phil Crowe
Agreed. I would add another detail: The Ray (or Mako) also beat SKX for everyday use because of the lower profile sloped bezel. Although not as easy to grip due to the low profile, they are nicer looking and more functional with a dress shirt than SKX. I believe the Orients are more adaptable to more situations.

The bracelet has screws not pins and a divers extension. There are no markings anywhere on the watch and the seller, exclusive watches is no longer on Ebay. Perhaps it was just tinkered together by a watchmaker and I was just lucky. Of course it doesn't have the exclusive trip lock crown or the lume of the real sub, but it's really really good. This appears to be the Best Everyday Watch Under $300.....that someone had to get out of the house before Christmas :) Many Thanks to the man himself for putting these up for auction, the black-dialed date complication model with the ever-so-slightly off 1 in the 12 has a new home in the US and I have to say it's every bit as nice as it looked in the review, I'm very pleased. It's easy to see how these check a lot of "every day carry" boxes very easily. Clean, I think elegant applies here, wearing exceptionally well on my wrist. Absolutely no complaints, a spot-on review and I'm in agreement, an outstanding watch (all of them) under $300. Thanks Again.

I get tired of the Rolex clone thing. That ceramic sunburst dial is pretty spectacular. Maybe the star of the show at least in conjunction with the Sapphire bezel...... Nice design language too.

Hi Jody, I would argue a black dial field watch is the best everyday watch. I know you haven't had a great experience with Hamilton but my Khaki King Scuba (albeit just over $300) is my favorite everyday watch...also a bit dressier with the polished bezel and slim design..

My everyday wearer is a Mido Ocean Star Captain, black dial with orange accents. However in the 300 USD or less I love my Dan Henry 1970 diver. Also have a Grovana non diver with ETA 2824-2 is nice at 275 USD.

It is because of your video on the Phiobos watches that I decided to buy one for myself. Other than the weak lume (even though it was supposed to have had the upgraded lume) I simply love my blue Phiobos 002 quartz! I definitely would love to buy an automatic Phiobos in the future! Love your videos, keep them coming. God bless and best regards from Florida.

Based on your review, I just bought and received a new Richard LeGrand ODYSSEA MARK II DATE! Wow..I absolutely love this watch. And I got the watch for a low special price of $199.00
Can you believe that? I visited the website several times, looking at the ODYSSEA MARK II Black Stainless Steel. Richard LeGrand emailed me with a "special" for the ODYSSEA MARK II DATE Blue Insert with the Black Bezel. Thank you for the great recommendation ! I am glad and thankful I got just one watch for my collection.

Favorite everyday watch at $300 or less? Gotta be my SRP777 Turtle on the black Maratac Zulu. Probably my most versatile piece. Though even my Casio F-91w at sub-$10 wants to be mentioned as a perfectly competent everyday watch.

Have the blue no date. The dial is stunning, the case finish is ok and good for the money but the finish transitions are not sharp as I’d like, the bezel action is ok 90clicks doesn’t bother me.
The sapphire bezel insert is excellent, the hands are great, the line is awesome.
The bracelet is pretty good, the clasp I find to rough on the edges facing the wrist, it sometimes dogs in when I close it, ouch!
I stuck it straight on a leather vintage strap and the blue/brown combo is amazing, well worth the money even with out the metal strap.
It’s a really eye catching piece. It doesn’t necessarily stack up to a macro photo shoot but on the wrist it’s beautiful, especially in a bit of natural light.

I've got the Helm Vanuatu on order but have to wait till Feb! Also just bought a Parnis big pilot watch at 47mm x 15mm! It's not for or everyone but I'm 6,4 8in wrist! Anyway I think the $300-$400 mark has a ton off great watches to choose from atm but Helm is king in my mind. Great video as usual and I'm a big fan off Ivan's Perth watches as I live here so you guys are my two favourite channels! Cheers mate...

I'm pretty happy with my Hamilton Khaki King I just bought this black Friday, it's versatile enough to be my every day watch in rotation. The sarb 33 it's another option in my wish list as an everyday watch. And if I'm thinking about desk diving I'll buy an orient Mako/Ray or maybe the new models, the one with the tudor blackbay flavor 🤔. The mido ocean star is another very interesting option if you want a swiss made diver with a power reserve up to 70 hrs. That is, speaking of the options you've got in Mexico of course. Nice video👍 amigo. Saludos desde Mérida 👋

Really enjoy your channel. Going outside the review and the feedback you requested, as being relatively new to watches I would really appreciate a rundown/review of automatic movements in affordable watches. It seems more than a bit confusing which is better. It may seem a rudimentary request but I'm having trouble finding a somewhat comprehensive opinion on the subject. What is good? Which is better? Could someone provide a link? Keep up the outstanding work and insight you provide to us.

For me...these days, I'm actually finding myself wearing my seiko sna411..(yes, its not an automatic) but something about the dome look where the light distorts and reflects off the dial feels nice to me....and it's a black dial so it goes well with everything. The touch of yellow on the chrono hand and the extremely polish case makes it a bit dressier IMO.
Great review on the RL Odyssey though.

Jody, your review is spot on. For every day (and occasional diving, swimming) this one really fits the bill. Understated appointments with classy (not gaudy) good looks. Already having a nice dress watch and several "knock abouts", I probably would not drop everything and purchase one right now, but if I catch a decent pre-owned on Ebay down the road I feel it would be a watch worth having.

Seiko Turtle gets my vote, just love the style. Best? probably the Casio Duro, I'm not a quartz fan but its accuracy can't be beaten by a mechanical. I prefer the non date version of this, date windows just spoil any dial (tho they are useful) Cheers 👍👍

  • @fergiet18

Great video, as usual ! The RL looks good but for me it's the Phoibos PY007C. Great price and a smoother movement. I have a Steinhart 39 black dial and a Kermit Tisell but the Phoibos gets worn the most. I also have (your fault) a quartz Phoibos which is just great value for about £100 and it looks good. Keep up the good work.

My favorite every day "affordable" watch is a toss up between the Vostok 710634 and the Invicta 8926OB. Both 200 meter automatic black dial Dive watches that can be had for less than $100 US. I would say the Vostok is my absolute favorite but the plastic crystal to my knowledge has no sapphire replacement. On the other hand I did find a sapphire replacement for my Invicta. Hence the toss up. P.S. Sorry, I wrote this comment before I heard the price constraints at the end of your video.

*i have 6.5in wrists and my perfect size watch is a 42mm one but that is merely personal pref. anyway divers can be extremely versatile even with a suit but not with a tux, so my best recommendation for the perfect everyday watch under 300 USD would be the TISSOT PR 100 automatic, 299USD on **jomashop.com** and just add a couple of natos and a black leatherette strap and you will have an unbeatable everyday watch plus the quality of TISSOT has no competitor for me at the price range, yet.*
