“Narcotics is a dirty business” is an iconic dialogue from the Mohanlal movie Irupatham Noottandu. The dialogue was featured again in the recent Mollywood thriller Lucifer. This line connects with all the Mohanlal fans and gets u goosebumps. The Godfather team didnt even understand or tried understanding this iconic line .This is one among the million mistakes in the so called LUCIFER remake which makes you think that the Godfather is a failed remake of a great mass polictical thriller.

This is going to offend some people but the main reason why chiranjeevi and most of the Telugu stars are doing these formalaic cinema is the audience. Even in the recent interview with Anupama Chopra, he was asked about the role and he said mohanlal is more of a versatile actor but for his case he says that the audience wants him to do the same kinda of cinema and he also says that he just feels like taking a different direction and it makes sense because if you take mohanlal's filmography and chiranjeevi filmography, mohanlal has Done a wide variety of roles but chiranjeevi is limited to a particular kind of cinema maybe apart from a few exceptions. So i wish the actors over there just don't stick to the same kind of cinema just because the audience wants it.

Will you take the responsibility of the losses that their film will face if they go against the taste of their fans? It's very easy to give precept but you need to have enough balls when it comes to set an example especially when it comes to compensating or reinforcing someone's effort with money.

Its not wrong as long as we are enjoying it. I personally enjoyed the movie, loved those slow motion hero elevations, at the end of the day we all know nothings real.
There is no right or wrong in a movie, what matters is if the audience are enjoying it or not. ( unless the content is illegal as per law )

What makes Lucifer so special is that the writer Murali Gopi carefully given his characters different layers which can be analysed and defined from different levels. Each glance of Mohanlal in Lucifer has various elements of mystery, and it also has its own depth. The introduction of Zayed Masood (Prithviraj), was totally unexpected for the audience. Other speciality of Malayalam Lucifer is that its characters had their own story to tell.

He said everything evil comes at one spot like sex, lust, money, violence and there a new avatar LUCIFER emerges in a black shirt. After some research I watched the movie again in terms of illuminality concept and it made sense.

From Vivek Oberoi to Tovino Thomas all were absolutely phenomenal in the original.
Godfather definitely misses the mark baring a few good moments.

Remaking Malayalam movies is not an easy task. Malayalam industry doesn't depend on making formulaic movies. Rather their films have always been known for its realist cinema. These films are more popular for their substance rather than the star power. But in tollywood, people have always seen their stars growing in a typical masala entertainers/ commerical template.
Very few telugu experiments found limelight, as mass number of people prefer their stars always in Action, typical slo-mo shots than acting in good dramas.

I think Malayalam Mass films are still being made. If I most recently look at Mohanlal's Aarattu or even a young actor like Roshan Mathew doing Night Drive. It's just that more Malayalam actors are willing to take risks vs Telugu stars whom would rather conform to formula

@@TriedRefusedProductions Exactly! The risk taking notion is not so popular around tollywood. They would rather have win-win situation than the other way around. But at the end of the day, its the audience perspective for every respective industry that changes the result. With the star image of chiranjeevi and pawan kalyan garu you can flip any good drama's like Ayyappanum Koshiyum and Lucifer in a masala retelling of the same and find success. This is not me rubbing my opinion, you can look at the BMS rating of both films comparatively!!

I am Telugu, but Lucifer with Mohanlal was just on a different level. The original Mollywood film had the story, the actors, the emotions so perfectly scripted. The Godfather was just a disappointment for me because Lucifer was such a perfect movie that I thought they could at least remake 70% of the superb storyline but they changed so much of the crucial parts that the story seemed different and they put way to much emphasis on megastars stardom. Godfather definitely a movie for only for the die hard megastar fans. I’m really hoping for a Lucifer 2 that continues with the same storyline. Honestly could make a whole series because Lucifer’s past is still a huge mystery.

1.Mohan Raja is a very experienced director . Prithviraj debuted his direction career with Lucifer. Prithiviraj's skills as a director single handedly challenges Mohan Raja's years of experience- how? just look at scene by scenes of both movies.
2.Telugu audience prefer only masala movies. They just want to go to the movies watch those masala's , get excited that's it. character building , story line etc is of no much importance over there. They need songs, they need dance , they need mass entry and dialogues and mass fights and movie becomes 3 hours. Lucifer on the other hand is focused on character building , a dark themed movie that's based on conspiracy theories. From the beginning of the movie to the end , it slowly builds a character of lucifer, who is actually not a guardian angel , but a demon who is the lord of hell who is at war with his lesser rivals. Just like the stories of the 70 dukes of hell and biblical references. Hence masala was of little to no importance in Lucifer Malayalam.
3.Zayed Masood's entry was a revelation to audience ( it was hidden to audience until release of the movie) . It was not a fan celebrated entry ( like Salman Khan in Godfather) . The relation between Zayed Masood and Stephen nedumpally is shown as a loyal slave / master relationship. Mohanlal's face remains' mysteriously serious & sharp looks when he sees zayed masood. There is no exchange of happiness or sadness between Stephen and Zayed when they look at each other ( just like how a master looks at his slave) . However Chiranjeevi is shown smiling when he sees Salman Khan and both go into bhai bhai mode. That degraded the character intensity for both these characters.
4.No other Indian Actor can replicate the facial expressions that Mohanlal can do. Throughout the movie , Mohanlal's eyes speaks a lot rather than his words. He is an all knowing , omni potent being who knows about how bimal nair killed the 1st husband of priyadarshini, How PKR was poisoned by Bimal Nair and How he intend to build a drug empire , how aloshy was cheating him , etc etc. Mohanlal's expression is cold , mysterious. In the whole movie , there is only last scene where mohanlal was wearing a sunglasses . However Chiranjeevi is seen wearing sunglasses throughout the movie ( he cant replicate mohanlal's gestures with eyes, so hide it with sunglasses. WTH)
In Summary , expectation from the Malayalam audience is very high despite the remuneration of casts & crew being very less compared to what is being offered in telugu and bollywood/ tolly wood movie industry. However , we get the best storyline, screen play and casting on a budget.
My request to PAN India audience - Please don't remake and destroy such awesome movies.

Plus Lucifer had a lot of Easter eggs in hinting about lluminati and the titular charcter "Lucifer" which again addas to the mysteriousness of mohanlal's character.

Cuz it was the climax of the film!! Whatever you built up from the beginning of the movie has to be satisfied in the climax. Its like you are served a biriyani and for desert they give you dog shit. It ruins the entire experience. Salman performed the character in a very goofy way and tried to make it his movie whenever he came on screen. The director also has to be blamed for this but in salman's case, he probably had steamrolled the director over and did it the way he felt like doing it.

Here in Telugu cinema, the star heroes despite their potential are more or less struck in a vicious cycle of stardom and fandom. They think appealing to their core fan base(just 20-30% of total audience) is enough to pull a movie. But they ignore the general audience who just want good and fresh cinematic experience. They are also kept out of feedback by the ‘bhajan gangs’ around who constantly beat their trumpet for their own vested interests. Unfortunately, this excess bhajan has also entered into the film in the form of some heavy praising scenes which are so cringe for a normal audience.

Does he want flat plots for movie? Or does he think his audience are not smart enough to grasp the original plot?
Because Lucifer has such a good mix of class and mass in it, it gave me goosebumps and has repeat watch value.

  • @Inpursuitoftruth9

Hi Jammy, I do follow your reviews and I really like how sensibly you put across your views. Having said that, with all due respect, I want to give my 2cents. “Telugu Audience” sensibilities are very different from rest of the audience across the country. I watched Lucifer and I really liked it … but I’m not sure my father’s generation in Telugu speaking states would like Lucifer as they like Godfather. It’s not that “Chiranjeevi” did not try variations. He did movies like Rudraveena, Apathbandhavadu where one can witness his acting prowess. But they didn’t do well at box office though the movies got national awards. The audience expect large than life characters from Chiranjeevi sir. At the end of the day, films are business and they want to do well. And I think when the wider range of audience have liked the movie and appreciate it (the movie is doing very well in Telugu states), they must have enjoyed the movie and it should not really bother us. You see, the movies are not just for the millennials, they should cater to a wide range of audience from different backgrounds. On a fun note, my in-laws hate art movies- doesn’t mean they have no taste. They just like different genre of films .

Was not expecting GodFather to be better than Lucifer, but this was a good timepass watch on its own. I'm saying so because watching it with a packed show at Gaiety really elevated my enjoyment. Chiranjeevi really lent his own to the role and I did like Satyadev and the way he enacted his role. The other thing i liked was the background score, it was pretty effective and suited the tone of the film.
Also, if people ever wonder if Salman's stardom is declining, they should make a trip to Gaiety and watch his films with a packed show.

People criticize MB for doing films like SVP, Sarileru Neekevaru but this films inspite of being mediocre commercial flicks Earned huge money in the box office. While Great Critically acclaimed Films like 1: Nenokkadine, Athadu didn't. Many believed that after the flop of 1:Nenokaddine film(directed by Sukumar), MB opted out from Pushpa inspite of already signing the film earlier ( Pushpa was also directed by Sukumar)
