Thank you for posting this video. I learned a whole lot!
So glad that Maybelle performed at college campuses and folk festivals in the 60-70’s. A wonderful way to connect with MY generation and continue the music of the Carters which was folk music, to be sure.
This also let June, Helen, and Anita raise their kids as a bit more easily, even though (ever busy) they continued to record and perform as a quartet.
Mother Maybelle’s guitar is priceless! I was very glad to see and hear her granddaughter Carlene Carter play “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” on her guitar along with Marty Stuart on mandolin, at the Country Music Hall of Fame fundraiser October 2020. Great interview!

Just hearing her expressions, like when she was reminiscing on working with XERA, “Mhm, mercy…” Reminds me of my own grandmother. What a treasure of a human being, Mother Maybelle was and continues to be.

I have not read this from anyone. Mother Maybelle had the most beautiful eyes. As she sang, my eyes were watching hers. Just beautiful.

She has very expressive eyes. Can’t quite tell if they’re green or blue, but beautiful for sure.
She gives credit to a black man named Essley Riddles (spelling?) for her scratch style. It would be very interesting to know more about him. I guess he was a friend of A.P.’s who brought him around to the Addington home. It’s truly honest and humble of her to reveal this.
Mother Maybelle Carter was great musician and fine woman all around.

This is an area of confusion for me; she demonstrates the scratch of hers on recordings before she ever met Essley. It is known for a fact, however, that she learned the country blues picking style from Essley and adapted it to suit her own playing style.
So far as Essley goes, I've read that he and A.P. caused more than a few heads to turn in Bristol because of their closeness. A.P. was so focused on preserving music that he seems to have forgotten what the norms of a city like Bristol were. Contrary to popular belief, more rural areas in the South, particularly mountain communities, we're significantly less segregationists and prejudicial than towns and cities, where economic competition lead to a scarcity mindset. Anyway, his comroderie with Essley allowed A.P. access to black singers, and there's a definite influence on a few of the early Carter Family recordings.
I'd be really interested to know if Essley met up with Maybelle or Sara in later years, and if he kept up contact with A.P.

Mother Maybelle has a very pretty laugh - my lasting impression. Excellent interview. One question: can you point me to a quote of hers about Elvis Presley (whom she toured with in 1956) ? Thanks.
