According to the writers, Azula was supposed to get an arranged marriage somewhere in the series presumably in Book 3 but had to cut it because it didn't fit in the flow of the story. Can you imagine the torment she would've put her would be husband through?
Either bro could’ve managed to fix her or that man would need therapy until the day that he dies. The latter is probably more likely.

Even if there was some dude in the Fire Nation who could help her overcome her myriad of issues and make her happy as a personal partner, it damn sure wasn't going to be any of her prospective matches. Nah, we're talking the sons of generals, admirals, governors, captains of military industry, etc. People raised on the "glories" of war.
Or make her worst if the guy turns out to be a maniac or emotionally abusive. I mean… it’s the Fire nation (the one in this period). He could be even worst than Azula, she at least have some redeemable qualities. Unless she kills him, which is going be a political obstacle so unlikely, she’s going to be even more fucked in the head.

Seeing Azula's feats laid out back to back like this non-stop actually is fucking nuts. She really pulled off some wild shit in this series and it all seems earned. Not a single ass-pull.
And she's not a Mary Sue because she has glaring flaws and gaps in her talents and personality traits. It's just that all of her good traits are specifically set to make her a perfect antagonist.
I don't know man. Managing to knock out a man like Iroh, while he is ready to fight, with a single blast of FIRE! Seems like the very definition of an ass pull to me. How do even manage to knock someone unconscious, with fire, while also not even singeing their clothes? That just doesn't make sense.

Azula is a tragic character. Her father made her a weapon and had no other purpose for her, he leveraged his approval to mold her into his perfect executor. She does everything the way she thinks he’d want things done and wins the war for him… and her reward is nothing but a meaningless title while her father alone goes to claim the world. She thought she was the favorite child and then realized she’s no different than Zuko. Ozai never cared for either of them, but Azula was useful to him. Everything Azula ever did… was for nothing. The only person she wanted approval from never saw her as anything but a tool he was ready to put back on the shelf.

Happy fact: Azula eventually rehabilitated herself (in the official avatar cook book), her part of the book says “May is one of the only people who is able to coax me into writing these types of things”, which means she’s on good terms with a few people. Her character development isn’t even shown yet it’s already on par with zuko in terms of interest

I mean tbf for the main cast she basically was one of the two final obstacles - take down Ozai to stop his very present and pressing plans of expansion, but also take down Azula to secure the future against war and tyranny worldwide that would only be further perpetuated. She's basically earned that final villain rank already

The way you talked about The Drill made it sound 100 times more cartoonish and comical than it actually was. Had me laughing the whole time 🤣
She came onto the show, clowned Zuko, held her own against multiple powerful benders, BREACHED a city that's supposed to be impenetrable, clowned the Kyoshi warriors, took over Ba Sing Se and the secret police from the inside, BURNED Long Feng without even using firebending, nearly killed the Avatar AND ENDED the cycle and would have done it had Katara not had magic spirit water juice, outsmarted Team Avatar and held them off without her bending, and even when she was mentally unstable, managed to fight pretty even with Zuko until he tried baiting her to use her lightning. That's not even getting into the comics. Azula was BUILT DIFFERENT. A tragic story but absolute savage on the battlefield.

I love how Azula’s last straw was being given the throne. After spending her entire life in a cutthroat system and assuming she would need to kill her dad one day, she’s just given it. She’s like a dog that catches the car.

I saw a video that went over that scene and Azula in general and their conclusion was that what really broke her about it was the fact that Ozai basically made a title above fire lord in the form of the Pheonix king thus him giving her the title of fire lord was more so him just throwing it away as lesser and saying metaphorically "This title is worthless now that I'm about to rule the world so you might as well take it since its only really symbolic now and doesn't hold much meaning anymore" thus it was more so just something to possibly placate her and to her she didn't really feel like she earned the title in the intended/traditional way and was kinda being discarded by Ozai, the last person she had that meant anything to her, at the same time.

Zuko had his head on straight because he had his mother heart with his father temper so he was in between good and bad throughout the whole show, zuko had a underrated character development to be honest

If you're doing an insanity meter, you should definitely include Bondrewd from Made in abyss at some point, the things this man has done is some of the most insane shit in anime, that weird ass dad from FMAB doesn't even compare in my opinion
Azula belongs on a special tier of villain, where not only does she technically succeed in killing the protagonist, but every single time the protagonist and his friends fight her, they lose and have to find a way to escape.
Zuko even makes it very clear that the only reason he and Katara could face her was because her growing insanity made her so unstable that she was starting to go berserk and not think straight anymore, a calm Azula would've stomped them both. Hell, the crazed Azula nearly took them both down anyway.

Azula gets kinda complicated in the graphic novels, hedging on anti-villain territory. Her last appearance had her using her father's loyalists to create a panic. However, she had no intention of ever freeing Ozai, for he had proven to be weak and simple. Azula instead wanted to ensure Zuko's rule was strong and the Fire Nation prospered, by setting up a crisis for her brother to solve.

Indeed. She wasn't even trying to conquer it. She was trying to hunt the Avatar and then thought "Fuck it, I'll conquer the state capital of my nation's war enemy and be a war hero while I'm at it'.
The saddest thing about this is that Azula was only 14 years old. Sometimes you forget, because she was constantly on her demon time and dressed like a soldier, but Azula was quite literally just a child trying to do what she thought would make her father most proud of her. Zuko was the exact same at the start of the series. Everything he did was to make Ozai love him again; the only real difference between them is that Zuko had a goated caretaker like Iroh to guide him and teach him to hold onto his humanity. Azula had nothing in her life but a lukewarm father and a bunch of yes men who feared her. I like to imagine that if she'd had someone who genuinely loved her enough to hold her accountable and support her from the very beginning, she might've turned out able to turn her life around just like Zuko did.

@@kroganwrex7945 Tbf, Ozai seemed hellbent on molding her into the perfect weapon while ignoring his failure of a son(in his opinion). That's why i imagine that he didn't let her develop a close relationship with Ursa in order for her not to become soft. And that's why Ursa stuck with Zuko.
I'm sure that arguments can be made about the fact that Ursa as a mother should still have done more, but with Ozai in the picture...Azula's fate wasn't going to change.
I love that more people feel for Azula. Like when I loved her back in 08’ people would be like ew (some of my friends still do). But she was written so well and it’s not like it was for no reason. She definitely would’ve been a little wild even if she was good. I feel like she’ll become like an “anti-hero” in the coming comics. It makes me so happy people sympathize now not just be like ew crazy b*tch

Watching Azula being cunning and calculated to having a mental breakdown, was wild. When I saw her crying, I kind of felt bad for her. Her father treated her like a tool instead of caring her. Her mother just left. All that had a big effect on her. I freaking love Azula and she was written so well. Also, I love this new change of pace. I can't wait to see who's next to the asylum.

Crazy part is Aang wasn't even in a coma. He straight up died, if only for a short time. By the grace of God and some magic water, Katara barely managed to bring him back to life. Azula temporarily destroyed the entire Avatar line and nearly won the war and her brother in one go. That's ridiculous.

Azula is overrated, she was showing signs of psychopathy since she was a child cuz remember she would torture baby animals and stuff, ppl claim azulas mom was not there for her but she was, azula just never wanted to be around her mom and pushed her away all her life. Even if Ozai favored zuko I can't see zuko turning as psychotic as azula, alot of it is still part of their nature they are born with even if environment is a factor, nature is a another factor. 🤷🏽♂️

Iroh had good reason to back out as he did, especially because his wife was already gone, he just lost his son , the last person remaining from the family he made. No! Don't even try to tell me Ursa was a good mother. Ursa knew Ozai favored Azula and knew how she was came from him. Had Ursa made some effort to temper Ozai's influence, Azula might have come out okay. Instead, she favored Zuko while spurning Azula as a monster. This, more than anything, was what caused the rift between brother and sister.
To his very little credit, Ozai just didn't pay much attention to Zuko and allowed his brother to play the mentor. Ozai didn't cast Zuko out until his son proved himself weak and unworthy. Again, very little credit.

Last I recall, she was let out of The Asylum to help find Zuko's mom, turned on the group immediately, and was going to kill momma until she gave a *powerful* speech eliminate her bad intent. After which she ran off and started a cult or some shit to cause trouble under the explanation of "making Zuko a better Fire Lord".
The fact that Azula’s flame was already displaying where she drew it from emotionally, she was already damaged, took me a while to understand her breakdown at the end😭

Azula was a straight boss. Strategic, cunning, thoughtful, and precise.. then after Mai and her next friend betrayed her, she became reckless and brave. She literally could've had it all if she wasn't drunk on power.

both her friends betray her and it being caused by mai’s love for zuko than their relationship based mostly off fear and ty lee also choosing mai.
her father used her battles and entire plan just so he can make himself the ultimate leader of the world and just tossing the scraps of being firelord (which is a worthless title to that) to her.
when she thought they were going to take over the world together. so he essentially abandons her too despite creating her in his image.

Azula really didn't have much of a chance, Zuko managed to be saved by his uncle who never gave up on him and his mother who cherished him which allowed him to get out of that accursed hole of despair and self-loathing. Their mother cherished both of them, but she was too deep in her father's camp to see it. All her efforts only to get a title was destined to be hers only to end up for it to be meaningless was literally the straw that broke the camel's back. If she could she would have chopped the man up into tiny bits herself, she basically self-destructed.
She still had a choice, she doesn't care about the suffering of others. We see Ursa try to instill good qualities in her.
I know many people who were abused or had horrible parents who were racist, or mean spirited. That went to schools in places where peers commonly made fun of people with disabilities and other races.
Some grew and changed and some were still kind people despite everything around them.
Many things are nurture but some things are nature.
And 14 year olds are old enough to understand imprisonment, murder, subjugation, and hate.
