  • CLW (Chitranjan Locomotive Works) is a manufacturing unit of Indian Railways has just released new 12000 HP Locomotive named WAG-9 Twin which coindently has same design just like WAG-12 from Alstom.
    In this video i have explained why CLW has manufactured these locomotives and what is the future of these Locomotives in indian Railways

    WAG 9Twin will be used mainly in ghat section as wag 12 struggles on ghat section due to bo-bo+bo-bo affangement whereas WAG 9Twin with Co-co+co-co arrangement will have higher tractive efffort on ghat sections. Although wag 9Twin will have lower speed than wag12 but on ghat sections it will be more effective than wag12.

    Most importantly, WAG-9 is a time tested model and reliability is also very high. I would like to see modern amenities like toilets, AC and comfortable seats in the new WAG 9s be it singke or twin units

    When you realize Indian Railways will make high power locomotives: *panik
    They buy Prima Series loco from you and brand it as WAG-12: *kalm
    They proceed to join 2 Swiss origin WAG-9 and make one high power loco: *panik

    The major problem with the WAG 9 was that it couldn't go over 80-90 kph in MU operation, because the oscillation of the catenary created by the first loco's pantograph would break contact with the panto of the second loco. This is why the WAG 12 locos use a single panto for the twin section. I am interested to see if it can incorporate the tech of power sharing between twin section with a single panto (if both are coupled together). If they are supposed to be used in push-pull, then even better.
    Also, another point of interest in my mind is the question as to how the loco would handle the power of the twin section on a Co-co wheelset. I hope CLW has properly ballasted the weight for this loco, as the old WAG9 loco was too light, leading to wheelslip under hard acceleration. WAG 12 used a bo-bo-bo-bo wheelset because its design was too light for a co-co-co-co wheelset design.

      Even WAG12 had wheelslip problem. During trials it couldn't climb gradients with load. WDG4 twins where sent to rescue it. What's in service with Indian Railways today is not WAG12. It's WAG12B (modified original WAG 12 where length and weight increased that increased tractive effort of loco).

      @@Pranith_Exactly. Weight is needed over the driving wheels to get adequate adhesion for the loco. And this is my thought as well, whether CLW has properly ballasted the loco for twin section operation.

    WAG 9Twin can be a successful locomotive as it is versatile and can be used even if both units are seperated, also this loco has a wheel arrangement of C-C+C-C when compared to WAG 12B's B-B+B-B which means this locomotive can provide more tractive effort than WAG 12B if both WAG 9Twins are operated together.......

      @@adr23 well it's not useless they are being used heavily, i have seen innumerable trains with WAG 12B's, although I don't know about them not being allowed in gradient sections, well i think that's not true, it's mostly being built for DFC but it's powerful enough to handle gradients

      @@theraildynasty_ Power is only half the story. A good freight loco also needs weight (especially over the driving axles) to be able to put its power to good use. Otherwise, it would wastefully spin its wheels and wear down the rails and wheels as well, without being able to haul any good load. The initial WAG 12 was too light to have good adhesion. The newer WAG 12B was ballasted with additional weight to offset this issue.

      @@prabhatsourya3883 true but that's an issue not only pertaining to WAG-12 but any other electric locomotive, if a railway operator needs more tractive effort then they will use diesel-electric locomotives, that's why railways won't be phasing out diesel-electric locomotives so easily hence the orders of new GE family.......

      @@theraildynasty_ Diesel-electric locomotives have higher TE compared to electric locos, simply because of two things. Their heavy components (the generator and transformer arrangement) are placed directly on their driving wheels, increasing adhesion. Also, diesel-electric locos can reduce voltages and surge up the current output for their traction motors at the lower notches, while electric locos are limited in this respect due to limitations on the amount of power that they can draw from the overhead lines. Thus, diesel-electric locos can provide higher TE at lower working notches, which is why they can start up and work larger freight trains single-handedly. However, as electric locos can draw high current all the time, at high speeds, the diesel locos lose out in the top speed game to the electric locomotives.

    What Freight trains needs now are Push Pull Wag9HH trains. 18000 HP. 12 axles. Can pull anything anywhere. Bye bye Wag 12. Just put all the nice modern amenities in the WAG9HH locos (AC, Toilets)

    we need to develop our own technology matching or bettter than WAG12B. when the contract is over with ALSTOM who will meet future requirement. needless to say that CLW has taken the initiative which will get perfected in due course of time.

      WAG-9 is a Goods Train engine, it is not for Passenger Trains. WAP-7 is the India's Most powerful Passenger Train engine, which has same technology like WAG-9. Main difference between WAG-9 and WAP-7 is gear ratio. Actually, 1st WAP-7 loco was made from WAG-9 technology changing Gear Ratio and increasing speed limit.

      There is no point adding HOG to WAG 9. The only reason why WAG 9 locos are hauling passenger trains is because of the shortage of passenger locos, which Indian Railways is working hard to eliminate. Once the loss is eliminated, there would be no need for WAG 9 locos for passenger haulage.

      @@ksgamer9358 That's an interesting idea. The question is, how much of power will a full rake of refrigerated products consume? If it is too much, the loss in power of a WAG 9 loco is too much to make economic sense.
      Also, if international reefer containers are to be connected to this HOG system, then it won't be compatible with the HOG system for LHB rakes. The LHB rakes use a HOG system of 750 V, 3 phase AC current. The reefer containers used in international trade use a power supply of 480V, 3 phase AC current.
      So a HOG for WAG 9 might make sense for parcel trains or reefer container traffic, it wouldn't be compatible with our current LHB use, not without a major redesign.

      There are diminishing returns for excessive number of wheels in an electric loco. The OG WAG 9 couldn't run MU, because the torque generated was too much, causing massive wheelslip. RDSO had to ballast the loco and add 9 extra tons of dead weight, to allieviate the problem. Thus, the reason why WAG 12 was using Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo configuration was because it was too light for Co-co-co-Co wheelsets.
      Thus, it depends on the weight distribution of the locos.

      @@adr23 Exactly. Even with a Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo configuration, WAG 12 was still too light to gain enough adhesion. So if this WAG9 twin is not ballasted properly, even this would suffer from issues in gradients.
      Also, WAG 7 had better weight distribution because of the bulky rectifier equipment. As more of the weight was laid out on the wheels compared to the center section of the loco, WAG 7 had great adhesion, which made it better for climbing the ghats.
      Also, I believe that Alstom had reconfigured the weight of the WAG 12 to make it heavier and improve the axle load, making the WAG 12B loco, multiple examples of which I had seen in the Nagpur-Jhansi section (which has some graded sections).
      Also, there is a catch with using twin WAG 9 locos. While it is true that two WAG 9 locos has a greater starting TE (1020 kN), the TE drops down to 60% of the starting TE, while WAG 12 is said to sustain a continuous TE of 705 kN, which helps in high-speed freight operations. So WAG 12 will have its needs in express freight service.

      Bhai, ₹25,000 crore ka poora contract already ban chuka hai. Abhi use vaapas nahi liya jaa sakta. Toh WAG 12 toh banenge hi, ye loco jaake WAG 7 aur WAG 5 ko replace karne lagega. Jaise jaise voh locos apne service life complete karenge, vaise vaise unhe decommission karke ye WAG9 twins de denge.

      R means retro fitted
      Usually alco Diesel produces DC current fed to traction motors
      those R Mentioned alco locos replaced by alternator and feed AC to traction motor's

    Indian railways is creating plenty of Wag12s and using them instead of WAG9s, so now these WAG9s are now being used for low weight/ empty freight trains and passenger trains where max speed is below 120kmph.
    but someone must have thought what if the spare WAG9s can be modified into twins and used similar to WAG12?
    that way more freight trains can be run on DFC without waiting for the WAG12s to come. existing WAG9s can be used in similar fashion as to WAG12s.
    so maybe this is an experiment to check on whether existing Wag9s can be modified for use in dual fashion.
    note: - using them in Push Pull for Freight may not be easy as using them in Push Pull needs them to be physically connected with electrical wire connections.
    I don't think Indian railways uses RF technology like the US Locomotives use for their DPS (distributed power system).

    Wag 9 was also originally imported but became indigenous gradually. Something similar will happen with Wag 12. This experiment is gonna fail most probably.

      Abhi vande bharat and vande sadharan express ki vaje se wap 7 ka production slow bahut slow hai,rokha nahi hai, isliye,aab aane Wale time pe trainsets replace karega sabhi Wap4, Wap7
      now Railways are focusing more towards good locos production

      Is it mandatory to improve design in Freight Locomotives? Freight locomotives are mainly for freight services, so, here freight service is much much important than design.

      @@ayush6319 India don't need to export electric locomotives. India only export diesel locomotives. India don't export electric locomotives, because, Indian Broad gauge(5ft 6inch) is only used in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have no electric traction system.
      Most of the country in the world use Standard gauge in their Railway. Some countries use their own gauge also. In India, Standard Gauge is used in Metro Railway and upcoming RRTS and Bullet train.
      Many countries in the world don't have Electric Traction system. Countries that have electric traction systems, make their electric locomotives or Electric Train set from Alstom, Hitachi, Siemens, ABB or their domestic companises directly according to their Track gauge.
      Indian Railway also collab with this companies for electric locomotives. Indian Railway gives tender to this companies to manufacture this locomotive in India or Indian Railway collab with this companies for transfer technology(Mainly Traction motor's technology) permanently to Indian Railway's own manufacturing unit, so that Indian Railway can make this locomotives ingeniously.
