Truly fascinating, incredible interview. And wow, not only does he look good for 92, his mind is sharp as a tack! This man is a true national treasure. And so is Whoopi.
Norman Lear is responsible for creating some of the most iconic shows and characters of all time, that changed the tv landscape forever; shows that represented people of all ethnicities, races, walks of life, socioeconomic classes and viewpoints, he was and is a true television and cultural revolutionary. Yes they were funny, and whip smart, with great characters and incredible writing, but they also made us look at things that some were uncomfortable openly discussing, things like systems of class and the disparage between the classes, how someone is treated when they are poor vs. when they are not, inner racial marriage and bi racial children, the confines of societal norms and pre conditioned expectations, systemic racial hindrances woven into the very fabric of society, and systemic racism and racial stereotyping. He told the truth, in that if you are black or brown or poor or a woman, it’s not true that just because you’re a hard worker and live an honest, upstanding life that things will improve for you and you’ll make it and move up in the world. Cause the world as ways to cheat you. That if someone wasn’t able to succeed within societies racially biased, sometime sexist and often stereotypical confines, it’s not automatically because they are not hard working, intelligent, capable, decent human beings who are giving 💯. And that being all those things is not always enough. Especially when the confines holding you back are part of society itself. The American Dream is alive and well, it is; it’s just more structured towards supporting a very specific and ultra narrow demographic: The American born, Christian white male. He was the very first person to ever present that in television comedy, and one of the first period. The first that really told the truth about racial injustice on television.
Classics such as The Jefferson’s, Good Times, All In The Family, Sanford And Son, Maude…my God were they incredible shows. Those beloved shows were my childhood right there. Could not love them more. And Mr. Lear’s father may not have been “king” Lear, but his son will always be the founding king of incredible television.

We need more producers today like Norman Lear. He was never afraid to showcase controversial subjects like racism, rape, a slew of political issues, economic inequality, racial inequality, gender inequality... the list goes on and on, and he did it using COMEDY! He got people talking... I don't think people are fully aware of the impact he had on television, and society in general.

@@malikkimanimaasai3703 I've heard his name before, remember him as a writer on All In The Family, but I just did a little research... You are absolutely correct. I had no idea. Looks like Lear settled with Monte by giving him a million bucks, which is peanuts when you consider the fact that each of those shows were hugely successful and still run in syndication to this day. Such bullshit. I never knew that.
