Painting Carmy in the style of J.C. Leyendecker | Step by step Tutorial using Artrage Vitae

  • Watch me create a modern-day Capriccio (mash-up) portrait of Carmy from the amazing TV show The Bear in the style and world of painter J.C. Leyendecker. Why? Because I love both these things and my client work often asks me to merge figures into historical settings or in whimsical ways and I thought I'd show you my work process and how to achieve this look using the fantastic digital art program Artrage Vitae on my Surface Studio 2 PC. You'll learn canvas set up, sketching tips, and transforming objects to make a coherent composition, blocking in colour and fine detail using the paint brush and palette knife along with a little history and chat along the way. I hope you enjoy and please do ask any questions in the comments section. More videos coming soon but if you have any requests do shout!
Many thanks for watching and supporting the channel.

@philgallowaydraws you want messy, my line art shares a certain likeness to a black hole 😅 I've all but given up on line art and just jump right into painting the piece lol, lines give me too much desire to draw details

@@umbreoniteUwU hahah you're right, they do constrain the artist a bit to stay within the guides. For this illustration it works but I love going rogue myself and splashing the paint on and seeing where we get to. Will make videos using that alla prima approach too soon. Thanks again and good luck with your art!👍

It blew my mind that Leyendecker inspired Norman Rockwell. I hadn't even heard of him before, but one look at his art and I immediately understood why he's been such an influential artist. Great job in emulating his style!

Leyendecker was huge until about 1940. He created the "Arrow Collar Man" which was such a popular figure that women wrote letters to Leyendecker offering marriage to the model, unaware that it was Charles Beach, his boyfriend. he had an older brother who also worked in the same style. His brother became a heroin addict and killed himself.

Leyendecker is my favorite artist. The first time I saw his work I was so captivated by his techniques! I really feel like he’s an artist’s artist, and once a painter or illustrator sees his work it’s transformative.

For those looking to make the leap from traditional to digital, and are a bit perplexed by the terms that programs like Photoshop uses ( I know I was, anyways), ArtRage is wonderful in that it uses terms more familiar to a traditional artist. Highly recommend, super easy to jump right in on and use, and also amazingly robust when it comes to creating your own brushes and stencils. Great work Phil, absolutely nailed the Leyendecker look, and a spot on likeness of Carmy!

Thank you so much, lovely to hear! Totally agree with you about Artrage, great gateway into digital art. Simple to learn and use basic tools but enough depth to really refine for the more heavy/ professional user too. Still feels the most intuitive and natural using the oil paint out of all the digital art programs out there. Looking forward to future updates. Thanks again and cheers for watching! 🙌

I lost my love for painting and digital painting a while ago. I just wasn't doing as well as I wanted with it and felt I was making no progress. Watching you paint this just reminded me that when I started painting it was for fun. Probably the best art process video I’ve seen on TH-cam right here~. Not only do I get you see you make something amazing, I also got learn a bit about Leyendecker! I’ve seen so many folks inspired by his paintings and style that all that love brushed on to me. But it’s also really inspiring to hear about his life, which is something a lot of folks here on TH-cam don’t mention in their studies of his art. Like I didn’t know he also loved art nouveau and Mucha! Love Alphonse’s art as well! It’s funny how we as 21st centurion artists can have so much in common with our idols and never know it!

I still find it mind blowing to see how Rockwell and Leyendecker can just direct your eyes exactly where they want you to, everything from the coffee pot and pan handle to the drawstrings of the dudes apron to the folds of the shirt on the shoulder to the bottom left of the note and its shadow (ect..)
it’s all pointing directly to focal points where he wants you to look. The salt and pepper shaker as well as the man’s spiked hair at the front signal the end of the painting pointing up as a kind of “exit” for your eyes to wander off of the painting.
Like how in the actual hell do you just take all of these things into account when composing the image? I guess a good way is to try and remind yourself as often as possible like a mantra when doing this in your own images.

Beach, his boyfriend was a very controling person who cut him off from his friends and family until they two lived in total isolation. Invitations went out to his memorial but by then beach had alienated so many people that only N Rockwell and Leyendecker's sister attended.

I don't have much experience outside of those two, as a windows user, I never tried Sketchbook Pro, or Procreate either, but CSP is kinda famous of it's "real pen-and-paper" feel, so I trusted what I've heard about it, and stopped experimenting. It also has a lot of panel-layout features for comic book artists, which I'm not, but it could be handy I guess. It's just something about the control panels I can't get used to.
