Merry Christmas! Frankenheimer’s visual style is uniquely original: You can’t mistake his movies for anybody else’s. That what makes them watchable, even when they are lacking in other elements. This reminded me of other late period films-Dead Bang and Year of the Gun-with their dull leading men and just not coming together as I hoped.
Happy belated Christmas Tony, and have a great New Year! Now, if have managed on several occasions to finish watching this film but somehow I always lose interest about half way through. Yes there’s flashes of Frankenhiemers greatness in what I’ve seen but it’s still sad to see his career ending on this film. I suspect studio tinkering may have something to do with its flaws, the same thing happened with Peckinpah’s last 2 films also ( and yes I do like them!). Island of Dr. Moreau was terrible, but the making of documentary featuring the original director Richard Stanley is hugely entertaining and worth watching! As always keep up the great work Tony!
Great stuff Tony! I hope Santa´s sack had Raquel or Sydney in it rather than the under-whelming Charlies, sorry Charlize. Feliz Navidad from sunny (but chilly) Spain. Keep up your amazing work and see you in 2025.
Happy Christmas Tony. Thanks for a year of great content. I saw this film some years back and was distinctly unmoved by it. All involved have done better before or since.
Only knew this by reputation. The impression I'm getting from your review is that the script knows what happens in film noir, but not the proper grammar or vocabulary those films were fluent in. I'm also getting the impression of Nigel Tuffnel and turning the amps up to 11 in terms of being over-blown. Regardless, Merry Christmas Tony.
Sounds like an eloquent and fair appraisal. Merry Christmas, David, and a big thank you for your continued support over these past years. It means a lot. T.
@@tonybush555 It wouldn't surprise me that there are alot of films over a hundred years has been called Deception because some muppet executive couldn't think of a title because they thought Reindeer Games sounded like Rudolph and mates were play draughts and that isn't action film. Great review T. As U did a 2; pov thing wasn't reindeer games released in two versions -the ,2nd been vastly superior to the 1st. I remember being deeply underwhelmed by it originally. Thanks for your continued input and support, Graeme. This year, there's more to come tomorrow and on New Year's Day. Merry Christmas, mate, hope it's a good one. T.
I remember watching this on Channel 4/S4C 20 years ago. Technically it had some great John Frankenheimer moments in the editing but I feel the main problem is some of the casting as they were at time Harvey Weinstein box tickers. Ben Affleck is miscast Charlize Theron was eye candy and Gary Sineise is on auto pilot. Its a shame that this was John Frankenheimer's swansong as its unmemorable the sameway as Sam Peckinpah's The Osterman Weekend. I feel if Ronin is John true swansong as the film had the right ingredients great cast, great car chases, great script and true John Frankenheimer cinema.
I feel the mindless feel was Miramax thinking were making a clever film but I get the impression John Frankenheimer wanted a paycheck and knew this film was silly nonsense.
@@AbrasiousProductions there are many of Miramax catalogue that suffered from studio interference like Michael Radford's B Monkey which its original director Michael Caton Jones got sacked due casting which Jones wanted to be diverse but Harvey wanted his 'box ticking' actresses.
Thanks Tony, we love you....happy Christmas and merry new year
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, mrpugster. With grateful thanks. T.
I've only seen this the once. But I have seen "Paltry Baps" live on several occasions! Cheers!

The usual inimitable irreverent humour, that has me in fits of laughter, and you get a film review into the bargain 😂

I never liked the UK title of Deception. It feels uninspired title. Reindeer Games is better.
@@ninfilms I never understood why they felt the need to change it. Agree that Reindeer Games is the better title. T.

this would've been much better if it made in the 70s, I could see a gritty 70s version in my mind

Ben Affleck may be a horrible actor but is a far better director. Gone Baby Gone comes to mind.
I would agree with that. Many thanks, Merry Christmas. T.

you know despite how horribly written this looks, it also looks a bit fun if a bit mindless.
I feel the mindless feel was Miramax thinking were making a clever film but I get the impression John Frankenheimer wanted a paycheck and knew this film was silly nonsense.
@@ninfilms same here. it was "studio interference" written all over it and you know Miramax.. they're a bit notorious for this sort of thing.
