The best place in Thailand , where you can enjoy Songkran , is the place , where are only Thais and no tourists !!!

I’ve seen both versions that I think you’re talking about. When I lived in Udon Thani, Songkran was celebrated in a different way with the washing of the elders feet for instance. And then the elders giving you their blessing and then pouring a little bit of cold water over your shoulder.
Later we would go to the main city of Udon Thani play water with the younger people. It wasn’t the same level, Pattaya has with all the foreign tourists. Back to those days, I tend to get sick after the festival, probably due to the extended days of water being thrown into my eyes, into my nose or into my ears
Unfortunately, not everybody has common sense. we still have idiots that intentionally try to blind people while they’re writing a motorbike down wet street. Of course, on the other hand, the people riding those motorbikes in those conditions are idiots as well and probably deserve everything that they get for being in the wrong place at that time of the year.
I was very fortunate and haven’t gotten sick from this last festival which for some reason I really enjoyed. At one point, I was thinking about returning to the US during the festival.

My Thai wife dislike Songkran, and like many Thais stay home, she also said many middle and upper class Thais do not celebrate the water festival.

I understand her philosophy, 100%. in all honesty, I kind of felt the same way really up to this year. I would say that 90% of my friends are older and they don’t like this festival either and basically go to other countries or stay in their residents for the entire festival. My friends that have businesses associated with the area that would make money during the festival seemed to love it, though I imagine the motivation is the money. This year with my TH-cam channel I felt like it was necessary to go out and provide some content. Good and bad came with that, the Good is that many people on the street recognize me and they realize what I’m doing with the video. Those people like to get on camera and follow themselves later on. The bad was I’m a big target for a lot of different type of people and I’m constantly wet for hours on end during this festival. Overall, I had a good time. I tried to stay positive and have fun. I think when you’re doing something that I’m doing you have to take responsibility and embrace the culture .

This was the worst ever Songkran. In previous years those who wanted to relive their childhood would play with water during the day and the adults could enjoy Pattaya in the evening. This year the children didn't show courtesy to the adults at all. For 10 days it was water fights day and night. It didn't have to be this way.

The coordinators of the event extended the time periods including the hours for the sake of money/tourism. Unfortunately it left a bad taste in some expats mouths especially the people that remember a better time.

Why would you willingly subject yourself to this? I could maybe understand if you were a younger person say under 25 but as a guy in his 50s this is literally the last place on earth I would want to be.

You don't know how close I came to leaving Thailand for the month of April because of Songkran. Something got into me though with the last minute. I hit the streets and absolutely loved it. I'm a 60 & just plain love life anymore. I'm through with worrying about the small things in life. I definitely get your point though and many of my friends feel the same way as you do.

what you're saying is you're too old to enjoy it..which is fine, plenty of people enjoy of all ages...they don't go out for the 10 days but usually for the last 2-3 days
