I knew Mr Borratt very well he used to be a local lay preacher and preached many times in my Church in New Tredegar When he retired he worked as a volunteer in Citizens advice bureau in Bargoed I started me own business in 1978 and he helped me in a very big way in setting me up which I have alwas been grateful to him
@@thecelticdruid7707 Yes I kne he had passed away it was anounced in our church at the time The last time I met him was in1990 outside the Pet Shop in Bargoed He was a gentleman
Andrew I enjoyed watching this and your commentary. Your background information was very interesting - especially that about the railway viaduct. I lived there from 1954 to 1962 so your experience is a bit later so nice to contrast with my own. I’ve been back there in 2016, 2017 & 2018 having lived in Australia and have been struck by the solid houses and other buildings but mostly by the beautiful parkland, river and countryside now the mines and the waste have been removed. Bargoed could be a vibrant and beautiful place to live again if it was given a second chance - sadly this isn’t materialising. The RAFA didn’t get to feature nor the schools and Park so you’ll need to do a Part 2. Well done on this video.
Thanks mate for sharing. My fathers side from Tredegar and mothers from Rhymney so found this very interesting. I was born in Rhymney. We left for Australia back in 1971 but even though young, we went often to Bargoed and I remember just how busy it was. Loved the poem. Both my Grandfather and my father worked at Oakdale.
Lovely video to watch Andrew it just came up on my recommended, its so sad to see Bargoed town in decline but we have our memories, glad you gave yr Graig school a mention .
sad to see Bargoed like this I used to come over from Merthyr in 80s as a kid, Was the Emporium a shop back then or am I mixing it up with Tredegar? Great video nice to learn about history n near towns
I'm absolutely delighted you watched my video Keith, thank you so much. Jon Pertwee was quite a character when he returned to Bargoed to open the visiting centre in April 1994. Your videos are excellent.
My GRANDMOTHERS sister lived in aberbargoed, her name was ALICE SOMMERS i loved visiting her in her tiny house2 up 2 down and had i think 4 children, she passed away early 60s my gran really missed her, bless them🙏🙏🙏🙏
Alice Sommers, I expect she's buried in Bedwellty cemetery. A nice story by you. Thank you for watching and your welcome comment. Best wishes from Andrew.
Amazing post! Fantastic poem! Interesting landmarks. I was always fascinated to visit the Emporium, which I thought was amazing. What is the Emporium used for now? No Bank in Bargoed, thats crazy. You have made a template for a walking tour of Bargoed. Have you moved permanently? 11 out of 10!
Hi there, thank you so much for taking the time to watch this. The Emporium is now empty, the town is a really sorry state so moving back to Bargoed is not an option for me, the town is now just memories and family and that is it.
Pity you didnt mention that composer Alun Hoddinott was born in Bargoed 1929 He died in Swansea 2008. He was one of Wales and the UK leading music composers in the 20th Centuary
A follow up is planned where I will interview the people of Bargoed and I will indeed include the notable people that are connected to the town, thank you for bringing this to my attention and your very welcome comment.
@@thecelticdruid7707 Yes, Wikipedia thinks he is still alive at about 91. But not in Bargoed. My sister's first went there in 1967, myself in 68. He must have been a teacher there before our time.
Hello Ruben, I'll be in Wales tomorrow but let me settle a day or two and we can certainly arrange something, yes, another video of Bargoed is planned, I'll be looking into the areas I've not covered and demolished buildings. Thank you Ruben for watching. Reply soon.
The drive to be green has become the drive to be poor. So sad. Yes coal would run out one day but still a viable source especially when foreign coal is being sold at £400/t+

Who was the famous opera singer who used to live in a fairly big house overlooking Gilfach Square? Was it Stewart Burrows?
@@tsl56 Yes, he was also a teacher at Bargoed grammar school before he became famous.
