  • One of the most common questions Kaleidescape owners have and hear is "what if you buy a title and then Kaleidescape removes it from the store?"
    Here is your answer. With proof.

    Awesome, thanks for the video. Already believed you but the video is a nice touch.

    Thanks for this video... this has to be the most controversial piece of home theater gear ever created.

      Agreed. Bizarre the wedge Kaleidescape has driven. It's a hobby. It plays movies. It's not a requirement. Just enjoy what you have/use!

      I think the "wedge" is mostly due to the price. I have been able to justify spending a lot of $$$ on my theater but for some reason have a hard time with Kscape. $9k for a 6tb "NAS" and media player just seems crazy.

      @@rafaelsmith681 You assume the cost is based on hardware + profit margin, but you’re not factoring the cost of intellectual property security. Kaleidescape has negotiated the ability to legitimately offer this quality of download, and I’m sure the licensing agreements were not simple. Much of what Kaleidescape provides is a security factor to deter a few people from buying a Kaleidescape, downloading all the movies, hacking the system and distributing them for anyone to add to their PLEX systems.

      @@rafaelsmith681 if you buy from a dealer you surely won't be paying that price. If you want, can hook you up withna dealer that would give you much better pricing then that.

      I understand that. Don't get me wrong...not only would I love to have Kscape and could easily afford it ...I just take issue with having to pay for the studios "security" to such a degree when I have no intention of doing anything illegal. if Kscape had a $3-$4k option with storage for only a handful of movies I would probably jump on it. I really have no desire for massive storage. Just want to be able to watch movies at best quality. I can deal with having to redownload if I want to watch something again.

    Appreciate the insight. Based on the company’s longevity thus far and examples like this, it’s as much confidence as you could hope for. That said, it’s hard for me to consider this ownership. It’s still licensing within certain terms. There’s also no redundancy (ex. if you fell on hard times and your k-scape player broke - you can’t just watch them on any device) Again, not arguing the value, just making observations.

      Risk in every purchase and the higher the price tag the bigger the risk. What happens when disc players are no longer made and your player dies? Horde used players? You could also do that with Kaleidescape servers. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    This is just not the truth. If you actually read their ULA you would know that not only can they stop providing you a redownload, they can also in the future charge you a "delivery fee" for redownloading "your content"

    And what happens with the movie that you already own when the better version gets released? Do you get a free upgrade or do you have to pay extra for the 4K version?

    • @av_nirvana
      @av_nirvana  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Depends. Generally it's a small upgrade charge. Sometimes it's free. You aren't required to upgrade, either.

    On the question of Ownership: Are you able to take a video off of your Kaleidescape Server (box) and transfer that video file over to your own personal computer and have the video file free of the Kaleidescape system? Or are these purchased videos locked into only being on the Kaleidescape System?

    • @av_nirvana
      @av_nirvana  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, that’s part of why Kaleidescape is able to offer files at this quality level. The system is locked down.

      @@av_nirvana Thanks for the reply and info. I was thinking of going with them, but if I don't really own the movies after buying them then I will probably just go with something like Jellyfin and just buy the 4K shows and movies I want and put them onto my server myself... That is disappointing since they are asking for $25k for a 88T system as it is....

    • @av_nirvana

      Certainly a viable option while there are still discs for sale to rip into the server. More and more frequently we’re seeing blu-ray only releases on disc that are 4K HDR on Kaleidescape, and Kaleidescape gets most content earlier than discs hit the street, sometimes several months earlier.

  • @chasandreae4178
    @chasandreae4178 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sadly seven months later there is still no point break in 4K

    • @av_nirvana
      @av_nirvana  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s Shout!’s fault, not Kaleidescape’s, but yes, I’d love to have it. I just saw it’s being released in the UK on 4k disc soon, so perhaps we’re nearing an exclusivity window closing here. Fingers crossed.

    Yeah, I would read their TOS again ( if you haven't already). It's pretty standard digital storefront stuff. Don't know why Kaleidescape people keep insisting they're different somehow when it's right there in their TOS. With Point Break, all they did was de-list it so people can't buy it anymore. And if a new distribution agreement with the rights holder is never reached, at some point - which could be anywhere from weeks to years down the line - they WILL be required to remove the download files from their servers and cancel the digital access licenses of anyone who bought it. And as for when this actually happens is purely up to the rights holders of said titles - not Kaleidescape. At that point, if you don't have the title downloaded onto a device, you will lose the ability to download it again. And if it's not present on any of your devices, it will disappear from your catalog. Again, pretty standard digital storefront stuff, but keep in mind it's the rights holders and studios who dictate these licensing agreements, not Kaleidescape. I highly doubt they would treat Kaleidescape differently here.
