He said that 16 songs ended up on the album but the rest at an orphanage. And then 7 years later he puts out Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards. He's one of the few artists I can listen to no matter my mood.
@@williamadamsmusic3025 you must be more saturated compared to newer fans like me. lots of releases witnessed. I found out about him just the last year!
@@gobuns2 SATURATED is a great description of me... My friends and family would agree. I own everything Tom has ever released and have listened to every album literally hundreds of times, so yeah, saturated is in the ballpark! I'm also a working musician and have learned and performed MANY of Tom's songs. ✌🏼😎
My favorite memory of Tom Waits: an appearance on the Dinah Shore with Cindy Williams (from Laverne & Shirley) and William F. Buckley, Jr. He sang “Step Right Up” and then joined the other guests. The conversation got around to songwriting, and Buckley very snarkily said, “I’d be interested to know how you write”, to which Waits replied, “Usually I use an ink pen.”
I wonder how much of what Tom is saying is true. You can kind of hear when he's himself and when his voice cracks he turns into a character he's playing based on himself. Love both.
Goddamn, this might actually be the most frank and honest interview I've ever heard him give on their process and about the songs so specifically. He usually never stops joking. This is amazing.
What great interviews! Jody Denberg has interviewed such artists as Paul McCartney, R.E.M., Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Willie Nelson and of course, Tom Waits. He retired this month after 40 years as a leading voice in Austin, Texas, radio.
Please one more record. Please, please. I have all of yours and I will buy this one, too. Hope, all is well, Mr. Waits. Thank you for the new version of Get behind the Mule, it is amazing.
"and the rest wind up in the orphanage" That's too perfect. Tom says such brilliant things just off the cuff, it's just a part of his DNA. I didn't even make the connection when I listened to Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards that it was an album full of his creations that had no home a la B-sides. He's so effortlessly clever its insane and that's why I love him.
I've been trying to track down a copy of this promo CD for years but prices have always been eye watering. Great that lots of fans will finally get a chance to hear this...
I’m just kind of bummed out that I can only “Like” this once.😢 He writes soul-wrenching songs, sings, plays, and acts, and actually has interesting and intelligent conversations with people. I’d like to interview him for my Substack podcast but I am nobody.
Some of the questions are great, but others so inane, yet Waits manages to either answer a more interesting question, answer the dull question interestingly, or dismiss the interviewer in an incomparable way. This is a great time capsule; thank you for sharing!
Excellent interview by Jody Denberg. No stupid or trick questions and Mr. Waits responded accordingly. He does not suffer fools gladly so I'm glad this interview went well. I love that it was interspersed with cuts from the album. Well done, all around.👍
I remember reading excerpts from this interview in a magazine in maybe 2007. The part about recording outside blew my mind and really stuck with me. I can't express how grateful I am to hear the full conversation.
Loved that Tom is a fan of Lucinda Williams. Imagining him talking to her, along with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison, is like a Renaissance painting of songwriting legends.
Loving the new content yall are putting out in commeration of such an amazing album. Thankyou - improved my day :) The interviews are really nice too, it's a good set of a little overview and if Tom gets the free time, I'd part with cash for some audio books. Aside from the monumental catalogue of work, Tom's also introduced me to Harry Partch and Ken Nordine, so more thanks for that too :)

I've read "Tom Waits on Tom Waits" and I can almost listen to his voice every time he answers a question.
Kathleen Brennan & Tom Waits are freaking geniuses. Their work will be remembered. They've changed the world of music. I'm grateful!
You don't find this kind of music. It finds you, when you need it.
It found me at the right moment and stayed with me ever since - for which I'm unbelievably grateful
so true.. and he founds me again!

Truth. It found me, and being something of a nit, I chose to ignore it. But it persisted, and won me over. I am eternally grateful.
