Last year when I went to Disneyland for my bachelorette party, Mulan was the 1st meet and greet character I saw! Her costume was so pretty! I told her I was getting married in a few days and she gave me some marriage advice, one of which was "Eat lots of dumplings!" It was interesting though, cause upon speaking to her, she implied she was in a relationship Shang, which would mean that Mulan 2 is considered cannon for the character in the parks. With the new movie coming out, it might not be anymore.
From what I've seen all the animated movies are cannon for the actors. Same thing happens when you ask Ariel about Melody. I haven't done any meet n greets with princesses that have live action counterparts yet but I imagine since the costumes are not cannon they approach it like "another version of my story" and keep with the animated version as being the "real" one. Just my guess though. I think that probably makes it easier across the board since not every character has a live action movie (yet).
Rachael Mow agreed. If you talk to Aurora she doesn’t really reference “Maleficent.” The animated characters are the ones you meet in the parks. I did ask Mulan how she felt Liu Yifei playing her and she was excited
Disney, give me Mulan at the parks wearing the dress she defeats Shan Yu in, you cowards - or just way more of her in her armor, that'd be chill too. I've never gotten to see Ping at the parks. (though the dress is gorgeous of course, I won't lie, it just makes me sad that she sings this whole song about feeling like when she looks in the mirror in that outfit, she doesn't recognize herself, then she gets this great narrative arc full of character development and gaining confidence, she's chopped her hair, she's got a more low-key dress, and... they shove her right back into that bride/matchmaking dress :( )
Yes! The blue dress has a nice mix of masculine and feminine aspects! I love that they were thoughtful enough to use it for Ralph Breaks the Internet :)
Are you talking about her outfit she wore when she shot the mountain and destroyed the whole army or the dress she wore at the finale battle where Shan Yu exploads in the firecracker
@@ididntknowthatwasanoption I mean the mostly blue dress she wears at the end when she fights Shan Yu on the roof. It doesn't look like they've really had her wear that dress in the parks, and I've hardly ever seen her in that dress on merch either.
Honestly Mulan shouldn't wear the dress she wears to meet the match maker...the whole point of that dress is that she doesn't feel like herself in it. So it seems really weird seeing the character in it
She should be in her blue dress. The one she kills Shan Yu in. Sure, it's not as 'formal' as the other dresses but other than her boy look, it's her most iconic outfit.
@@KeepCalmContemplateYourChoices the blue dress is a perfect pick and for some reason I completely forgot about it? I was always a campaigner of the more relaxed military get up (no armpit but still a uniform) or the green dress we see in a lot of official art and in Mulan 2 as green is kinda Mulans color (her uniform is green) but the blue dress has way more potential as it’s got the really gorgeous sleeves and the great red bodice and you could even have her wearing the emperors pendant and I feel like it’s got just as much ability to be “prettified” for the parks and a much more manageable costume for the actor? Like he don’t they do that?
Oof, that first costume...the way they just stuck the haircomb to the front of the wig was awful. It's supposed to stick into the hair where the only part showing is the flower.
Putting Mulan in the matchmaker outfit in the parks wasn't really thought out well buttt as a fan of Chinese and Asian cultures since childhood as well as of hanfu (the style of Mulan's dress/ancient Chinese dress) I do love the modern version with the more authentic details sooo much, it's so pretty. Still we need an end of the movie Mulan look though. And tbh the costume designs of the live action movie doesn't thrill me compared to the costume designs of Asian period dramas... Even other live action movies about Mulan
Dan is so underrated. While I'd love to see a live action Mulan in the parks I don't think that's something they'll bring in. Just based on the fact that they haven't done anything with the other live action princesses. Though I'd die to see those costumes in person. Great video as always
Fun fact: it's because when you have a live action actor, you can't have another live action actor impersonate them quite as easily. With a cartoon, you can hire whoever you want. With someone like Giselle, who's live, you can't hire Amy Adams to work the parks - and people are gonna realise it's not Amy Adams.
I remembered seeing this parade at Disney World (1999) as a 4 year old and having my mind blown. We were there for several days and left early on the last day so our parents could turn off the computer because of the Y2K scare 🤣
Shadow the hedgehog Puppets she sorta has 3, the classic, Chiminey attire (which is used for winter park wise) and then (possiblly) her Mary Poppins 2 attire don’t know if they used that attire yet
Mulan was my idol growing up, especially because I was a little Chinese girl watching. I didn’t get to meet her in the park in 2017 but hopefully next year in 2023 I can. She is such a role model for me
The reinvented Shanghai’s version of Milan has so many details that are specific to ancient Chinese fashion. I’m Chinese, and first time seeing that dress made me wanna cry. It’s so gorgeous how they kept the cartoon/Disney iconic silhouette and palette while adding Chinese details, because that’s a Chinese Disney park. Details are everything. I love it.
Okay, is there something I’m missing about the petticoat in that costume? It’s got layers of toole underneath it and I am by no means an expert in Chinese fashion history but I don’t think petticoats were every a big thing? Especially in 300 CE imperial China. Hold up, were some of the old interpretations lowkey whitewashed? I mean, I get it'd be hard to hire French/ English speaking Asian women in France but still
A friend of mine used to work as a character attendant at Disney World and apparently the reasoning from the company is that the cast members usually play multiple characters, so if they required the non-white princesses to be played by people of the same race that would mean they couldn't play as many characters. Just stumbled on this, and I'm so glad I did!! I saw the Mulan parade in Disneyland shortly after it debuted. It is still in my top 5 Disney parades ever.
Disney dan!! For years I have had weird memories of a parade with walking buildings, a giant flying shan yu and mushu on a bike taxi. I thought that my brain was just making things up but now that you have video footage those memories are flooding back to me!! Thank you, now I don’t have to question my sanity 😅
You didn't notice??? The "red detailing" on her sash is Mushu! :D Naturally Shanghai's Mulan would look more historically accurate to her time period. She has been a folk hero in China since about 500 A.D.! I could only hope they would do it up right.
I liked the Shanghai design for Mulan. Dan, your laughter is infectious! You made me laugh so much that I snorted! ABSOLUTELY LOVE "Character Evolution" and "Distory"!
Hey, Dan! Guess what! I met Mulan in her first parks look at Epcot for the first time and I showed her her portrait with her and her friends, and she LIKED it. And that was also the first time I stepped into Walt Disney World on March 2015.
I’m here for the dancing buildings, mushu as barker dragon, cute little crickee and Dan’s enthusiasm and laugh. He could write a Wikipedia re this parade. ;).
Oh my god I’m so glad I watched this video, I just had a visceral flashback to seeing the Shan Yu float and crying into my mom’s shirt so hard we left the park LOL I must’ve been 5 or so 😂😂😂
I think Mulan is fabulous in her different gowns. When I met her in 2009 at Disney World, she said she liked my wheelchair and asked me how I made it pink and why I had it. I told her it helps me to get around on vacation and when I am in my community and that it was customized for me by my doctors.
Oh my god. So Disneyland story time. I only had vague memories of this before seeing this video, but now it's all coming back. In 1998 at Disneyland my dad and I were watching a nighttime parade with little three year old me on his shoulders. Next thing I know, I'm on concrete having been dropped when he started clapping thinking I was securely balanced. Well, now I remember it was the Mulan Parade and I'm pretty sure what my dad was clapping at was the Mushu float. I still have back issues because of that and now I know it was the Great Wall of Mushu that caused it.
Mulan is my favorite Disney animated movie. (And I LOVE Aladdin & TLK too). The instrumental of "Mulan's Decision" is my favorite part of the movie. (2nd is I'll Make A Man Out of You" and my 3rd is just at the end of the "Girl worth Fighting For" and viewing over the hill...)
I was going to settle for the triple I want that horse as the best part of this video, then I thought again about that amazing Great Wall of Mushu. So it's a tie. And I love that cricket. It makes perfect cultural sense, the cricket was a symbol of the growing season and we see Mulan grow through out the movie.
15:13 I hope these images are flipped because, as a simple google search will show: if a kimono's left side is folded in first, it symbolizes going to a funeral. The right side is folded in first for casual wear.
I loved this video,it made me subscribe!next u should do either Mary Poppins,Storm Troopers,or the famous hypeman, hype dragon?anyways I think u know I'm talking about Mushu. Also,ur videos are so creative it inspired me to start making disney plush videos, which I will make soon, anyways, thank you Disney Dan!Thank you!
Honestly these costumes are AMAZING and beautiful and wonderful, but they do Mulan so dirty when she’s just in her matchmaker outfit. I like seeing Ping, but the end dress and short hair would be fun. Or at the very least I LOVE the more refined Mulan from Shanghai.
Fun fact about Y2K! I went to Disney World in 1999 for the turn of the millennium. My parents planned the trip to distract us from the fact that the end of the world was near because where else would you want to spend doomsday besides the Happiest Place on Earth?
I first met Mulan in 2002 at MGM Studios dressed as Ping and it was fantastic. I personally like the outfit they looks straight from the movie as opposed to one she wears now. I'd like to see her in the outfit when she saves China. It would be a nice in-between of her as Ping, but still being elegant at herself, but that's just my two cents.
Great vid, as usual! I guess the Mulan I liked the most was the one introduced in Shanghai, but it would be hard to select anything else, right? Shan Yu is creepy but eh... honestly I was never intimidated by the character when watching the movie, even as a kid. I was like "omg lol the stupid villain got barbecued!" - and yes, that was literally what I said when exciting the theater - I still remember it! I think the Disney villain I like the most and that in a way scares me the most is Zira. I have two questions, that are not really related to Mulan specifically, but Disney park experts should know! First one is - how do meet-&-greet villains react to people who act nice and affectionate with them? Some guests would like to play the intimidated one, and well, the person in the costume would play their role, but if the guest is acting very sweet and friendly, then what? Second one - were there ever parades or meet-&-greets of the Lion King 2 somewhere? And if yes, did Nuka ever appear?
Last year when I went to Disneyland for my bachelorette party, Mulan was the 1st meet and greet character I saw! Her costume was so pretty! First off, CAN WE GET DADDY DISNEY DAN IN A BROADWAY MUSICAL???? HIS VOICE IS SO DAMN GOOD!!!
That intro BOPPED
Mulan is my favorite. I wish we could see her more in her green and yellow outfit.
“Dragon, not lizard, I don’t do that tongue thing” which I always remember because I have a monitor lizard who does that “tongue thing” 😆
I died when you brought West Side Story into this 😂❤️
Mulan is my favorite Disney animated movie. (And I LOVE Aladdin & TLK too). The instrumental of "Mulan's Decision" is my favorite part of the movie. (2nd is I'll Make A Man Out of You" and my 3rd is just at the end of the "Girl worth Fighting For" and viewing over the hill...)
Thats my favorite part too! The music and animation is just the most beautiful thing.
I love how you just crack you self up!
I loved this video,it made me subscribe!next u should do either Mary Poppins,Storm Troopers,or the famous hypeman,hype dragon?anyways
I think u know I'm talking about Mushu. Also,ur videos are so creative it inspired me to start making disney plush videos, which I will make soon, anyways, thank you Disney Dan!Thank you!
That intro tho, that was legendary
Honestly these costumes are AMAZING and beautiful and wonderful, but they do Mulan so dirty when she’s just in her matchmaker outfit. I like seeing Ping, but the end dress and short hair would be fun. Or at the very least I LOVE the more refined Mulan from Shanghai.
My first Disney parade was the Mulan parade! So many years ago. Great memories.
We went for the Buildings With Feet.
Fun fact about Y2K! I went to Disney World in 1999 for the turn of the millennium. My parents planned the trip to distract us from the fact that the end of the world was near because where else would you want to spend doomsday besides the Happiest Place on Earth?
Would love to see you discuss the evolution of Maleficent's costume evolution at the parks!!!! Or Ursula :)))
I first met Mulan in 2002 at MGM Studios dressed as Ping and it was fantastic. I personally like the outfit they looks straight from the movie as opposed to one she wears now. I'd like to see her in the outfit when she saves China. It would be a nice in-between of her as Ping, but still being elegant at herself, but that's just my two cents.
i would love for this parade to make a comeback. It is stunning!!!
I HAD NEVER SEEN THE SHAN YU PARADE FLOAT BEFORR AND IT HAS BROKEN ME! I am DYINGGGG! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And if yes, did Nuka ever appear?
wow the matchmaker float thing is WILD!
I can't stand the constant giggling of this guy, but the channel content is good to watch
I was on the college program last year and we got to meet Shan Yu exclusively for DCP. He was terrifying. TERRIFYING.
16:40 1st rule of Disney's live-action remakes is: We do not speak of the live-action remakes.
17:37 Well received? $80,000,000 budget: $30,000 return. Ouch!
i'm so excited that the mulan remake is coming out on my birthday!! the original movie is one of my favorites!!
They look so great!
They went all out at the parks!
...As for the live action movie...
I loved all your Disney setup n the background so cool.
