Sitting 25 years! Will it start? Freightliner cabover Big cam Cummins"Jolly Green Giant"

- Will it start video of my 1987 freightliner cab over semi tractor. it has a big cam cummins 350 with a eaton fuller 9 spd and rockwell axles on 24.5 rubber. This video is part 3 of the Jolly green series
You are right not to trust that turbo because most runaways are caused by the oil seal in the turbo blowing and the following induction of uncontrolled oil flow thru the turbo into the engine thus a runaway engine until you either shut that air flow completely off or it empties the oil pan and most of the time its the latter ending up with the engine in pieces
Thank you for having common sense. So many people are telling me cummins don't run away. I know it rare but it could still happen.
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE It sure can and the main reason for it to happen is the seals in that turbo go to pouring the oil that lubricates the bearings into the fan area and a cummins will run away with that oil but a lot of people dont believe it but I have in my 50 plus years as a Mechanic Seen it happen and like you always pulled that air intake hose off the turbo and kept a board big enough to slap over that air intake so I could choke it down if that happened. Detroit would runaway because of the blower system they had on theirs but they got real smart and put a door with a trip cable on it on the air intake side of that blower to shut that engine down but cummins never saw fit to design that in that fashion so it left it up to us mechanics to figure it out
You can just use a carbon monoxide fire extinguisher and spray it into the intake manifold until it completely shuts down.Alot better than using a rag or towel and trying to put your fingers in the turbocharger.Speaking about Cummins, that's what you had to do with their small cam engines because all of them were naturally aspirated but the big cam engines were all turbocharged with the Holset 60.
@@Slim_Slid Best way is what he has there which is a block of wood or plastic anything solid which will fit over that turbo intake hole completely and shut the air off safely. common sense tells you not to use a rag or towel or stick your fingers in that turbo unless you want to lose them
@@douglasmorrison9098 The reason why I said that is because I saw a video of a guy that had a runaway with a Detroit 4-53T and he used a rag and stuck his hand into turbocharger. It fortunately shut down, but I was expecting blood to spew from it once he tried doing that...
There isn't much else more satisfying for a man than to use his own 2 hands to get a beast like this to turn over after sitting for over 20 years. It's a testament to the spirit of the man as well as the dedication of the men that built it.
Do you know that in the Dominican Republic in the Capital , Santo Domingo , by the Malecon ... means on the Ocean Front .... there is an old style restaurant that still plays whatever song you want , and the best food in all the Country ..
Name is Vesuvio Restaurant ...
Get a chance to visit there you won’t be disappointed
@@tallspaniard1 Thanks for the tip. I have old friends from the DR. I'll ask them.

I don't care who you are, you gotta respect this man for bringing this beautiful shaker back to life. Nice work, man!!!!!!
congrats on getting the old girl going! im sure you are relieved and happy to hear it run as well as it does. you didnt bother me a bit. happy to help any way i can. i own 4 cabovers right now. i would sell them all except one....
Love watching your channel!! You're a smart man and a very good mechanic!! Keep em coming!! I learn from watching you!! Thanks 👍👍👍
J.C., do you know where I could get a cover for the battery box of a 1984 Freightliner cab over?
Good job brother any Cabover guy is our kind of guy!!
Big fan! Thanks I really appreciate that!
I’ll give you credit, for a guy that appears to not have much confidence in himself (you keep saying “I don’t know what I’m going to do next”!) you sure are like a dog with a bone...you keep moving forward so good on ya! You have a great attitude!
There's another fellow on here "Jonathan W" who's the same way. I think it's just thinkin' out loud. Usually right after saying it, he's doing what he needs to do. Also, both guys seem very humble.
Nice ! ...thanks for the trip down memory lane ...I got a cabover freightliner like that brand new in 1987 , ntc 400 .
I will never need to know any of this and have no idea why I watched this entire video but I believe that it was your persistence & determination that kept me watching! That was awesome 👍
It's cause we all like happy endings!
Just stumbled across, watched, liked and subscribed....as they say, there's NO school like OLD school!
Greetings from a Swede in Glasgow, Scotland....🤜🏻🤛🏻🍻
Thanks for subbing and watching I really appreciate It!

My pleasure....looking forward more videos!
I like the old Cabover Frieghtliners.Great job gettin er fired up..👍👍
Well done on the turbo and starter, getting stuck in and solving these problems. The home refurb of the starter just shows what you can do and right approach from a man on a budget.
Take your time, no need to rush, keep it safe. That Freightshaker will serve you well if you bring her back right. Making her safe is the key here, continued good luck!
it is nice to see history run again
Greetings from the UK, so pleased you got it to run 👍😁 your channel came up in recommend & I was like oooh old freightliner I'm in
man, watched all of it... awesome you brought the old girl alive ! keep it up :)
I am impressed! Jolly Green lives. You really did your homework and stuck with it. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Peace
When she fired up, i was just excited as you were lol. Keep up the good work.
I drove freight shakers thru most of my 35 + years OTR ! Best trucks on the road in my book ! Cabover is the ONLY way to go ! Lol. My grandpa ( also OTR ) said anyone can drive a truck down the road but only a trucker can back them up ! That 87 brings back great memories of being out for 300 days a year and greasy spoon restaurants and waiting to off load and laundry and showers in truck stops ! Man I miss those days !!! NOT ! Lmao. Nice tractor there !
I hear you brother, its an addictive lifestyle. THE ONTARIO 76 , WAS GREAT.
@@domnick8806 Taledo 5 was an armpit also ! Lol
J.C. and twinsticks are awesome guys. Nice work on reviving this baby. Nice to hear that Cummins come back to life.
I drove one back in the 70s, and 80S, i drove Freightshakers, they had the two stroke Detroit's in them. smoke like a bygod, and when you stop at a truck stop ya would fill it up with oil, and check the fuel, we hauled a lot of TVs and VCRs from L.A to Bloomington Indiana.
Old 350 Cummins in the ones I drove! "Poor man's engine" cheaper than the CAT for sure!
I drove Freightliner at Ralphs Grocery for 18 YEARS and i loved it.
Brother You have a chance to Blow Up your channel Like You said it's True Cabovers are the New TH-cam Channel People are following And They Love to watch a Restore from begging to finished Truck No Matter how long it takes as long as You are Really Restoreing the Truck and You have a Awesome Truck that's is in Good Shape and Worth watching to be restored Good Luck with the Truck and your Channel it will explored as You do your Truck is

magnificient truck, good luck with it. nice weather and nature also, very calm and cosy.
I've seen some fairly serious runaways over the years including guys that didn't think to shut the airflow off and ran around trying to figure something out only to have the engine eat itself alive. Way to keep a level head on your shoulders and work through the processes. I taught myself how to be a mechanic by taking things apart and putting them back together. The rest I learned from experience. I've worked on thousands of cars and trucks since then and I still learn new things everyday.
At the start of this video I thought you were saying you weren’t that good at this but your wrong youve really impressed me you dam good at it
Love COE's,trained in a 79 Freightliner when I got my class 1,back in 1982,good job!!
Wonderful. I love the way you brought that iron man to life with pure Cummings sound! I work on those engines with or without a helper and I make sure I have all I need without driving back to the city .
Nice job Master, I speak litle english, but even so I understand what you are doing, greetings from El Salvador, Central America.
Wow!! This Truck looks Good for its age!! First truck I drove as A young guy. That was back in the late 70s It was a Beast!! 👍
First video of yours that I have watched, like your attitude just keeping plugging away and figuring it out.Cool rig.
Good looking old truck. It was great to hear it crank up.
Way to go!! It’s great to see younger guys showing the love for the older machines. The older machines have contributed so much to mankind. Good job sir.
Ohhhhh she's a beauty. I love trucks. Especially older ones like this. I drove trucks for a number of years. Loved the work . My first truck I ran for my boss was a 1980 Freightliner. And man I loved that truck. An absolute beast of a truck. Sounded like storm in hell when it started up. Used to send noobs running for cover. It was hilarious.
The truck was black gold and red. The company colours. Mostly hauled reachorses to and from the racetrack. And or studs and stables. She was such a smooth ride no serious rattles and it didn't upset the horses. And I got the job driving them as owners and trainers wanted someone who had experience with horses I grew up with horses. And rode part time as a jockey . Yes female truck driver of barely 5' tall and a lightweight 6 stone. .
Used to get some crazy funny looks I tell you . People used to look at me look at the truck look at me again and be like nah she can't be driving that. When they realised I was. It was so damn funny.
I'd just say hey guys how you going. And they'd be sitting there with dumb looks on their faces like a cat stole their tongue.
Wish I could still drive but my hips and back won't let me anymore.
And I'm third gen. Driver.
Keep up your awesome work.
Chriss from London UK and St Lo France.
Awesome story im sure you turned alot of heads! There's a horse farm up the road from me with a cab over same colors its a beautiful horse hauler! Ill try to take a video of it sometime .
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE ... Thankyou for the very quick reply . Your so kind.
Please do try to get a video of that truck at the horse farm I bet it's a stunner.
Always have had a soft spot for the cabovers . They feel and sound so unique when your in the truck.
Hope your still enjoying the big Green one.
Keep up the brilliant work.
Shoutout to JC Smith! I learn a lot from his videos. Good thing too cause I just bought a 1987 International 1845 4wd! Should be fun.
Love the truck. Just subscribed!
I have driven over 200 cabovers and i have a conventional now and miss coe s have been in the million mile club 3 times in my life and im 65 years old now and still driving have fun kido
Just checking in from Australia. I really enjoyed this video. Down here, the attitude of can do "common sense" shown by the author of this video is highly regarded. Bloody good job mate!
God speed to you and your Freightliner. Swell video. Look forward to seeing it drive.
From Glenn in Australia.
First truck that was assigned to me as an over-the-road rookie.
Hi
I drove an 1988 just like that one. One thing you will want to check is the heater core It will plug up with bugs and dirt had to put a new in a new core in the one I drove. Love to see the old girl running again . Keep up the good work.
Not having water or anti freeze in that oil pan is big, your going to be ok with that engine, I am so happy for you.
Cummins are pretty bombproof engines, you really have to mistreat them to get them to fail. Best part is no damned engine management systems to break on older wagons, so easy to fault find, if you got fuel at the injector feed pipes and the engine spins it should go.
My first truck was 1974 GMC Log truck pulled it out of the woods put battery n fired her up 4-5 brownlight 300 Cummings
I think I found my new favourite channel! I love 80s freightliners
You have done a outstanding job and it sure sounds great . Please keep them coming.
Way to go bud
Man, owning one of these cabovers is my dream. My dad was a trucker, and I find myself wishing I had become a owner operator like him so I could own a truck like this. I decided on a different career path, but I enjoy watching videos like this.
Yeah definitely a cab over guy been in the uk but do love a normal hoodie too or bull nose as we call them. That feeling you had before you turned the key I was the exact same the first engine rebuild I did I had to get another lad to turn the key I physically couldnt being myself to do it in fear it would just go bang lol loving the show
Great video love the old cab overs enjoyed watching thanks for sharing take care
Great video and great job man! My dad owned cabovers most of his career and this took me back to my childhood.
Gday from Australia. Absolutely loving these videos. Thanks for bringing us along. 👍🏼
My oldest son is working on getting his CDL right now, so that’s kind of why your video caught my eye. I like revival videos in general but I don’t think I’ve seen one done on a big truck before. Very cool 😎.
I was as excited as you were when she finally started, nice truck.!!! Cant wait to watch the next video.
The wait was worth it! You can not beat those old engins! Great job getting it started! That is a nice shaker!
Exactly like the first one I drove on the first company I drove for, even the same color! OMG! You got me drooling son! 5 miles a gallon drive my 1300 miles made me grin ear to ear with my 300 gallon cap. Drive half the continent before I had to pump fuel. Those were the good old days for trucking. 1988 shower ticket never expired! No cell phones, no Qualcomm no GPS (only bummer).
You did a good job there! Some guys get impatient, just hook up batteries and spin her over. You made sure it did not suck all that nasty crud into the injection pump. Glad to see JGG is alive!
Great job guy! Being patient was awesome! Good luck!
I drove semi's for 30+ years, driven almost every make of tractor on the road, started out on the Diamond Reo, I will always have a place in my heart for the cab over,
That had me sitting on the edge of my seat... Good Job Dude.
good job and watching you makes me want to find on and restore it to you can never have to many cabovers
I have always used WD-40 as a starting fluid for diesels. Ether washes the oil off of the parts.
Can also get the engine 'addicted' , we've a Hyster forklift used in an ammo compound that will not start without a whiff of 'Easystart' even on the hottest summer day
I have to admit I have never seen your channel before, I watch twin sticks, and JC, and others, I was scrolling and seen Big Cam Cummins and as a OTR driver it grabbed me, the very first truck I ever climbed up in was a 1975 Pete cabover and I was hooked, after watching this video and knowing personally how committed you have to be to restore a old cab over and the seemingly endless hours of hard dirty greasy work, not to mention the $$$$ you gained a subscriber and now I’m going to spend my morning catching up and watching your videos, Thank you for letting us tag along behind you in your adventure, that engine sounded like she was ready to pull, and I know that you were happy when it ran too, Congratulations!!
Love your channel!! You don't give up Brother!! Much respect!! I drove a cabover just like yours!! Keep up the good work and Congratulations!! Engine sounds great!!
You did it the right way. Getting everything clean before starting.
Congratulations on getting it started ! I know you got to be happy. Can’t wait to see it rolling down the road.
That's a blast from the past for me, I spent many many years behind the wheel of one of these.
Good job. I know that feeling of first start very well.
i can feel your sense of accomplishment when she started up great work
The jolly green! I love that name. Good video as usual
Yes the U.S.A. Army in Vietnam used the term all the time with the Helicopters (Jolly Greens) work horse of the sky. Keep it coming 👍👍.Geoff Lewis, Wales, UK, 🏴
Some great memories 👌 good job starting, old green Giant
Dude that’s awesome I enjoy watching old things come to life. Keep the videos up.
Would love to see that old girl restored,American trucks from that era are far better looking than the modern stuff.👍🇮🇪
I’m with you brother, gonna watch every step of this back to life story!
it takes a lot of work to keep this truck shining ..don't give up keep on, greetings
Awesome getting it started.
That truck hauled millions and millions of board feet of lumber around the Northwest and West Coast.
Congrats on getting that running!
Great job. Super jealous. I was on the edge of my seat during its first start.
Gday from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺there’s something about the cabovers,we don’t get to see many of these old beasts over here anymore so whenever a new cabover video pops up I quickly jump on and have a look to see whether it’s gonna be worth subscribing. As soon as I watched your initial walk around video I didn’t hesitate, loving what I’ve seen so far and I don’t think it’ll be long before your subscribers goes through the roof….funny how every one of those other Chanel’s you mentioned I’ve been subscribed to for ages as well and they’re all great Chanel’s.Can’t wait for the next instalment….cheers 👍🏼
Here we're tired of seeing cabovers everywhere over & over again. Regards from India. 🇮🇳 Love the Australian Roadtrains as well!🇭🇲
Nice job! Alot of work , but paid off ! Thanks for sharing!
Watched it from end to end 😁 suprised by the shoutout thanks man! Getting me excited to get the 87 home 😄
Good job! Excellent video and Audio content... Those Cummings are beasts and last forever! I appreciate you and the Community does too as well! Gotta watch your next video!!!
Well done dude looks a lot of hard work but it paid off.👍 Watching form the U.K Wales
Hello from Georgia, nice project. Looking forward to the next videos
Duuude, thank you for filming this, its this kinda stuff that got me into a pathway toward being a truck mechanic. Good stuff
Nice, I used to drive an 87 just like that in 1987, great trucks
Just listening to that thing run for 10 seconds brings back a lot of memories… It’s a shame how they’ve destroyed this industry. 👍🏾👍🏾✌🏾
Good job , glad to hear run. I drove a 352 Pete Cummins 350 Recon 13 double over very short wheelbase good old truck !!
Happy for ya Bud! It is satisfying when it cranks back to life!
Fantastic truck and video... Thanx for make me dreaming... Cheers from Italy
I had my fingers crossed 🤞🏽 for you the whole video 🙏🏽 I would be proud to have you on my side brother! Love the videos exited !
I worked on many of those cab overs, I felt your pain on that starter bolt, just one of the many things you run into. Good Job
Beautiful truck....cant wait to see it alive and running.
started right up.. that good compressor is a sign of a good engine. good job!
Could have painted the vise while you were at it. 😉 Great that it started. You have a real winner.
im a old late 70s and into mid 80s trucker i hauled everything but flatbed.i ran a 79 transtar it was only one year old and later a pete cabover 352.the transtar and the pete both had 400 cummins and 13 speeds thats what our company bought we where always heavy.when i ran gas linseed oil dry van no matter it was 50000 min.miss them days some but not that much.its cool to see you saving one old cabover that i saw alot back in the day!We had a few white cabovers by mid 80s and some short nosed fords with detroits hated the fords in nebraska up a incline winding like crazy at 35mph but they rode nice.the transtar i had 500000 miles on it when it finally broke down.i coasted off onto a gravel road with a full load of malt o meal cereal no cellphones back then.jacked cab up thought it was a fuel filter and heard rustling in the corn it was about 2am i was surrounding real fast by i counted 10 hungry coyotes i crawled up in already jacked up cab and slept over steering wheel facing ground till i could flag a farmer down in the morning.ended up being fuel pump dyed
Wow that engine sounded great for being dormant for so many years. Totally expected major valve noise or turbo failure. Even I was elated to see it turn over and hearing it run.
Cabovers were one of the most maneuverable tractors to pull trailers with. The major design flaw was in accidents the driver suffered major if not fatal injuries. Great video and very happy for you that you got the “Green Giant” humming again.
I worry about the accident part it's always in the back of my mind but it's way to awesome of a truck not to risk it!
@@NOT_FOR_HIRE oh it wouldn’t play on my mind enough to prevent me from driving it. Maneuvering in backlots getting to some loading docks are a pain, but with a cab over it’s often easier without the hood from a traditional poking way out. You’re right, it is too awesome of a truck not to drive. I’d restore it as much as possible being it’s a classic and a big legacy to modern Trucking.
You deserve a 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 up and can’t wait to watch the upcoming video
This was an absolutely awesome journey and experience! I cheer “whoooo” at the same time!!!!!
I came across your channel tonight.... I love it and am looking forward to watching more of your uploads.
