There's only two types who rent planters and drills, those who realize they're lucky enough to get ahold of one when they really need it and treat it well, and the other who don't care because it's not their's and treat it like garbage. That is why l don't lend or rent out equipment, to much of a gamble as to what l will get back.
There's always gonna be problems as long as it's a rental. I vote that it be checked over before it leaves the place and when it comes back. Any damage, broke,or missing pieces and the labor are to be paid for by the person who rented it.
Hey Ross, one time on my old Allis drill, I had a couple of drop tubes plug, fill with seed, and the metering flutes would be running full and more or less were just grinding the seed to dust. I didn't have anything shear, but maybe on your drill it is? In my case all the problem was that a couple of spiders had decided to use the drop tubes for a high rise condo, and build up a couple of web/nest in them and plug them up. Maybe your problem is as simple as that? Stranger things can happen!
I've never messed with a drill, but the clutch reminds me of the clutch I had on my NH 654 baler. I had issues with it binding and it was due to a lack of grease from the previous owner. After having the clutch teeth welded a few years later it went out, because the shaft had been so worn from a lack of grease that we needed to put a new shaft in it. My youngest son suggested we weld the clutch together and that solved the problem, until after 10 more years of abuse, we had to buy a new JD baler. Good luck with the drill situation, I know you'll figure it out. Enjoyed watching, I hope you have a great weekend!
Hey Ross can i rent that for the winter? i can put gravel, rock salt and sand in the three boxes to cinder my driveway! don't worry about the pin breaking, while i have it i will weld that unit to the shaft. As long as we are chatting what size gravel do you recommend? 😁😁😁
I rented one of those from NRCS. Filled it with native seed at house and drove 1/2 mile to field and planted 3 rounds. Looked in box and it had never turned after shearing pin. Dug it all back out. You have to fill it in the field you are planting. That fluffy damn stuff packs around agitators sand stops it
Take an 8' diameter steel ball and give it to some farmer customers along with a feather and they will return a battered 6' feather damaged diameter ball. It is the "It is not my piece of equipment" syndrome. I would replace the shaft and all parts on the engaging end. It is only government money. If I remember correctly, you were going to get some pasture seed. It would be a good time to try that drill out.
I can’t say for sure but I’m fairly certain the owners manual says the first problem troubleshooting step is to beat on the equipment with the biggest hammer you can find.
Every piece of equipment, new or used, I always made sure to have a manual and for the tractors and harvesters I went out of my way to get the service manual not just the owner/operator manual. This is why I'm not a people person. I've chewed people out when I caught them doing stupid crap like destroying a unit for others to use. While you're ordering parts, replace the springs. They look and act ok but, if they're slightly weak, they'll cause headaches like what you're dealing with now.
I had another thought about your drill problem Ross. Could the drop tubes possibly be kinking or getting flattened out when the drill is down, filling up, and shearing the pin? Then emptying out when it's raised and eliminating any evidence of the problem? Just a thought I had.
Operator error! Nothing else. Back when we had a decent IH dealer, I would rent big round balers for my few dozen bales a year. They'd rent out a well worn unit and invariably I'd end up doing all kind of repair to fix what the last guy tore up, usually at my cost. Then they had a new Case/ Heston with all the toys. Wonderful machine. Next time I got it, the idiot before had messed it up bad by changing all the limit screws to try to make heavied bales than the thing could do. Trying to keep the bale count low for the rent. Yes beat the thing up with a hammer as well! Every time we got it back, the same thing, so you know the same idiot did it. After this nonsense for 2 years, I thought maybe I could buy it for less than list because supposedly they reduced the price in the amount they received in rent, after all, it's a used baler 3 years on the lot. No, they still wanted full list, so I found the used one I now have. You will never cure it's issues as likely the same idiot keeps tearing it up! Our soil district has the same unit for rental, I don't think many farmers use it, mostly landscapers doing large areas like schools and the like.
That’s quite the mystery. Nothing really catches that hard to sheer the roll pin. I have drove a smaller roll pin inside another but when it does sheer it’s a pain getting the two out. Be interesting if new chains will help that is the obvious right now.
If the drive in the wheel isn’t completely disengaged and occasionally grabs while roading the unit I could see the sudden engagement could shear the pin. .??? That’s quite the mystery.
Were it me, I would go ahead and get that piece (the clutch?) a new shaft and a new chain. I am surprised there is not a bearing and a seal inside that assembly. Maybe more than one chain. When they rent that thing out it should come with specific instructions agreement that they should be forced to sign and if they break the thing they have to pay for it. I looked at some listings -- that is a $50,000 piece of equipment. I can see why it is a rental unit.
😊😊 HI ROSS it has done gotten old working on the same thing all of the time ⌚ 😮 and other people using that equipment doesn't help matters none either 😮😮 parts need 2 be replaced bent or out alinement I don't blame U 😮😮 I would be out patience W that also and slamming it down 2 ground it help matters none in the beginning 2 start W let them fix it the next time ⌚ 😮 then see how they like then it will be no jokes or no lies 🤥 😮 either 😮😮 OMG 9 2O 2O24
Yup, when all else fails go back and read the directions. You turned the shaft and I replayed your video several times and I could swear the shaft looked a little bent?? Maybe my eyes deceive me.
Hey Ross good job
Good video Ross

Speaking from experience seeing some of those who have rented our Conservation District’s Great Plains drill this description is accurate.

Love your videos Ross! Always something to learn ..

I guess one thing that stood out to me was there was no grease on those clutch parts even though I saw a grease fitting.

John Q Public and rental equipment can be a lethal mix!!!😵
yah, good lesson for me before I complain, why doesn't our county have one?
Just down load the manual its on the public side of the website. Just looked up stuff for a BD7600 this morning

Whether it be cars, houses, hotel rooms or farm equipment, Nothing Parties Like a Rental!

It probably had a solid shear pin when new and someone put a split roll pin in a split roll pin is spring hardened which makes it brittle 😊
Ross the answer man. Has almost as nice a ring to it as Ross the Oliver man. You could probably even charge for you're services!
I wonder if they are towing it at high speed on the road with the wheel engaged.
That's a thought, although you would think the chain would be trashed.
Rental equipment like this is famous for getting beat on, and we all know that one person who could break a steel ball with a rubber mallet.
@danw6014 well the pin is shearing off from the overload then the chain is turning intermittently
Good video Ross. Looks like someone beat the crap out of it. Need some new parts. But I'm sure you'll get it going. Thanks for sharing.
Ross the Mountain Dew Man !
it might be binding when it is full of seed .good luck with it.keep the videos coming.
Hopefully get it sorted

Great video Ross , see ya tomorrow .
Ross, the shear pin is in there to protect the driven part. Not the drive part in most machines.
We've run a 1206 for years.Never had problems with that.
I wonder if people are leaving the wheel locked in and pull it down the road at high speeds.
Yes your time and experience is worth something
Dumb question can you back up the drill while still engaged at the wheel would that sheer the pin?
I had another thought about your drill problem Ross. Could the drop tubes possibly be kinking or getting flattened out when the drill is down, filling up, and shearing the pin? Then emptying out when it's raised and eliminating any evidence of the problem? Just a thought I had.
Crank to the sack….lol

Always a mistery 😅
Is it possible that they may be getting the transmission in two gears at once and jamming it causing the roll pin to shear?
👍👍👍👍👍
That’s quite the mystery. Nothing really catches that hard to sheer the roll pin. I have drove a smaller roll pin inside another but when it does sheer it’s a pain getting the two out. Be interesting if new chains will help that is the obvious right now.
Such a simple way to run a planner but difficult fearing out what's wrong I think I would just replace the whole clutch in the new chains
Anyway to add some signs on the outside of the boxes so it's the 1st thing people see?
If the drive in the wheel isn’t completely disengaged and occasionally grabs while roading the unit I could see the sudden engagement could shear the pin. .??? That’s quite the mystery.

Everything looks like it needs some lube. Coiled roll pins are pretty tough but if you use one your next weak point may show itself real quick.
I don't understand the people that beat equipment just because they don't own it.
some people dont know what a grease gun is for.
i worked for a place that let people rent equipment an the public was brutle on it the didnt care for the machine they treated it like garbage

Chains look pretty dry and grease fitting also. Look on the bright side your making money while making money.
🤷♂️
How is your grandfather?
I would say it gets abused because it's not there's, and that's sad
typical if someone doesnt own a piece of equipment the wont take care of it just use the hell out of it,
