This video shows you how to see if the watermelon is good by tapping and listening to it, it this video I show you a example of a bad vs a good watermelon and how it sounds by tapping it. It can be disappointing to pick a watermelon and buy it and end up with a bad watermelon because you didn't know what to look for in how to pick a good watermelon. This is the video I was looking for. Before my mom passed, I couldn't remember what to listen for when tapping out watermelons. Spent some $ on some duds, while spending other $ on some good ones, but couldn't discern the difference. Thanks for taking the time to create this video and educate the TH-cam public! I more of gently smack it with my fingers flat, kind of as if beating on a drum. I listen for a good crisp resonance, medium to higher pitched. Dull-sounding or deep/lower pitched watermelons I usually avoid picking those. It's not a fool-proof method but it works majority of the time. The ones that have a good crisp resonance tend to be good watermelons.
I work produce and this is exactly right. You want a good thump that’s almost like a drum. The higher the pitch the more crispy it!is. The lower the thump the more ripe it is. All the bad watermelons always have a low dead thump.
Also check how firm they are. You should be able to press the water melon and have absolutely no give. If it does give in as you press, it’s mushy inside.
I have a solution for the not so ripe melon you can get occasionally. The ones that sound like they might be good, but you taste it, and it’s barely sweet. Sprinkle with salt and Tajin, and it improves that unripe melon immensely.

I am pretty familiar with the knocking method.
That one on the left doesn't even look right, after being cut open. I have never seen a watermelon that worried me... until that one. O.o

The bad one was so over ripe it looked mushy when you put the knife to it.
it's been so long since I thumped a melon I had to look up what to do.
In the store a few minutes ago I thumped a few melons and at the same time held my free hand on the melon. I suspected the ones that let me feel an "echo" in my free hand were the good ones.

Bruh, we Iranians use this method arguably the most when we're purchasing a watermelon.
Also you want the spot on the water melon to be more yellow then any other color you also wants the little white like stripes going from each end to the other to be more rigid then straight also he's right the more circular the sweeter so yeah ovals like the worst
Still not sure about the knocking or tapping but the difference of the small or round ones and the oblong ones aren’t female or male, they’re SEEDLESS! 🤦🏼♀️
Yes I noticed the shorter ones are seedless the longer has seeds I just bought one with a good tap and it was ranges in colors from yellow to orange to some parts red the skin was so hard to cut into.
The store probably wouldn't be selling such an "old" watermelon. I thought this would be thumping "like" melons to determine the best one. It was soggy......because is was old and soggy......that one was ready for the garbage before you cut it.

We do the same thing when choosing a watermelon ın Turkey and this technique is the easiest and accurate one.
in australia we just cut it open in the store and taste it. If no good we try the next one.
