Honestly this could be a great idea for offical/community servers, where a random monthly or weekly event happens and shakeups like this happen more regularly
My favorite thing about the stock games is seeing all the dead ringer crutch spies hold w and cloak as soon as they take damage only to immediately get folded
this is a sentiment i dont understand, how can the dead ringer be a crutch when its worse than stock? I'm not a big spy player and i dont use the dead ringer so maybe im missing something here
@@lt2660It's the whole "feigning death in a very unsubtle way" gimmick. A dead ringer cloak won't flicker if hit (at least, not for the first few seconds), so you're more likely to get away even if your "death" wasn't convincing. Meanwhile, a stock watch will always flicker if hit or bumped into, so you can't vanish so easily.
@@danbossofthedairymob7764 yeah but even without flickering and the damage resistance and the speed boost its still pretty easy to track a spy. In worst case scenario you might wait for the loud decloak, or even if they do get away they now have no cloak. Like sure, feign your death and get away. All you've really done is give yourself a shorter respawn because you're totally useless.
@@lt2660 it sounds more like you usually go up against bad spies. Though i agree its not a crutch, all disadvantages of the dead ringer can be nullified if used by a decent player. Im not saying its better than stock though its just an entirely different playstyle.
Statistically, the people who invested a lot of time into a game are more likely to have invested money into it, therefore wearing hats means theres a higher chance they're more skilled. Doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be the case, but it does make sense.
Spy sense is a thing for basically any player that’s played tf2 for a while? If you have ample enough time to observe a teammate it’s very easy to spot a spy unless they’re trying their hardest to act. The problem is that enemy spies will always look at you. They can’t help being suspicious.
@@LowProfile0247 i think it has more to do with the game sense and skill level. good spies tend to stay in your peripheral vision, not drawing attention until you're preoccupied. if an enemy player is watching my disguise, 90% of the time the gig is up. Medieval Mode was super fun when this was going on! There was just a bunch of heavies taunting instead of huntsman snipers. Thank you to all 0 employees at valve for this beautiful event!
daaang should have tried that. No Crossbows, Shields, Swords, or Huntsmans sounds like a completely different game. I'd guess the 'meta' would be Spy Heavy and Scout(?).
I started playing in 2008, so medic, pyro, and heavy had unlockable weapons already, but there were no hats, so it felt a bit like this. Everyone was equal. It was very chill, like a chat room with guns.
I also started in Dec. 2008, but on the 360 version, so I'm glad I got to fall in love with stock TF2 before it was too late. I've even played Hydro! With people!
I started in 2012 but it was on the PS3 version. I eventually played it along side the PC version as I didn't have full time access to the PC like I did with my PS3, so I have a very fond soft-spot for stock TF2. The aesthetic and "tone" was just something else.
July 2008 for me, so just before the heavy update. I remember thinking it was crazy how medic and pyro had 3 whole weapons more than everyone else, and then when the heavy update hit and I realized they'd be doing it for all the classes my hype was immeasurable. The hype for the original Scream Fortress events was insane too, dropping everything I could to play. Nothing quite beats the excitement for the old updates.
It was sort of interesting watching the players who you could tell were accustomed only to playing their hyper-niche subclass try to relearn the mechanics of the stock weapons again (which they probably haven't touched since they first downloaded the game)
It was so hard to get used to stock after playing heavy weapons guy with no socks on with the family business but i only use 3 shots until i have to reload, subclass, oh yeah i also can only play every saturday.
I joined during the prerelease beta, right after they reduced the grenade launcher's clip size from 6 to 4. Lots of differences between stock then and today. Only sentries had upgrade levels. No airblast. Pistols used to be semi-automatic (you can probably blame me for the change to full-auto). There were a few other differences, but those are the big ones I remember the most. For a little while there wasn't a delay before scoped shots counted as headshots. A couple times they tinkered with the minigun's spinup time and damage vs sentries. Pistol/revolvers didn't shoot straight down the crosshair on the first bullet. I remember them nerfing airbursts with the stickybomb launcher. I'm sure you remember the somewhat-recent afterburn change. That's all I can remember off the top of my head, but I know for sure there were other changes to stock. 🤔
Eh, back in MY day the Engineers didn't have their gunslingers, Heavy couldn't eat his sandwich, and demoknights didn't exist! The game was all skill! "Alright grandpa, let's get you to bed."
@@jaredcondit9888 Back in MY days engineer couldn't pick up buildings, airblast didn't exist and blast jumping was wonky as shit... Yeah I don't miss those either.
I remember playing this on The Orange Box for the 360 the year it came out. In retrospect, the fact that we played without airblast sends shivers down my spine.
I actually regret missing this! A lot of games have like "special weekends" or limited time gamemodes/maps/events dotted fairly frequently throughout the year. Not to the level of halloween or christmas; just a handful of tweaks to the game's settings. Something like that in TF2 would be quite fun, without the risk of it losing its novelty because it only lasts for a few days.
I'm atually getting a Nostalgic reaction by seeing hatless/ tauntless/ stock players, on Maps nEw *and* old. However I'm also getting a lot of Fomo becase I forgor to play TF2 for 5 days.
Unintentional things like this are fun too! Destiny 2 has had a few accidental instances like the Laser Tag weekend or, more recently, the Craftening, that shook up the game feel in really wild ways that were an absolute blast to play around with. They even gave emblems to people who played during those mistake-events.
I played on launch with the orange box. I mostly enjoyed it being a 'modern' experience of the time with modern graphics, animations, voice acting. You playing engineer reminds me of how placing sentry guns/buildables and it not being 'janky' to do so was an INCREDIBLE novelty unto itself. Team Fortress Classic for example, you could only place things one specific way in mostly specific locations because the footprint of the sentry was huge and did not like being near certain kinds of terrain. Because of this in fact, the 'meta' around sentry building was pretty flat and uncomplicated. For the most part you could mostly only place sentries in their 'designated nests' like how snipers had their own bunkers.
I loved it while it lasted. No hats, no discrimination and impression of skills from hats or weapons. It truly felt like a pure tf2 experience. We had a pug while this was happening and it was really fun.
This game was an integral part of my childhood. I remember baby me playing it for the first time in 2007 and my tiny baby brain being absolutely exploded from the sheer awesomeness.

No dead ringer, no kunai, no wrangler, no short circuit, no rescue ranger, no minis, no mad milk, no ubersaw, no banners, no sniper unlocks, no flare guns of any kind... it was perfect honestly.
The best part about this item server outage was playing medic. It was so nice to not worry if the other medic has shot 20 more arrows than you and gotten 3 übercharges thanks to that, and it was all about actually managing your heal targets and flow. Loved it...
@@florinflorea3995 they do, but provide less charge per hp healed than a medigun. I know the crossbow used to actually build uber faster than the medigun, unsure if this is still the case after the jungle inferno change
@@sleepydogboy5599 It doesn't give less charge, but rather its Übercharge build rate is affected by the same scaling that the medigun's healing itself has which allows for crit heals So while in practice most people you'll be arrowing won't give you the same charge as the medigun, it doesn't actually have *explicitly* less charge rate So if you ever find someone who has crit heals and is hurt (could definitely happen at like, the front lines of a payload defense round when someone's waiting on a kit to respawn or anything similiar), then it's still better to arrow them in regards to Übercharge building
@@ijre I might be misunderstanding & have no clue if the tf2 wiki is accurate, but: "Healing a teammate with a syringe fired from the Crusader's Crossbow also contributes a small amount of charge to the Medic's ÜberCharge meter, but contributes less charge than healing the equivalent amount of health with any Medi Gun." This has been in effect since Tough Break, while the heal scaling mechanic from the medigun was introduced to the crossbow in Jungle Inferno. So if I understand what you mean, and unless the crossbow's base charge rate was buffed at the same time the Jungle Inferno changes went through, I believe the crossbow both gives less charge than the medigun and is affected by the medigun's scaling mechanic. However in a practical game I believe you're right in that it may still build uber faster in cases of crit heal due to its bulk healing and reload speed. @fiendish9474 I hate how true that is. Like most companies games ban all engineer secondary weapons but stock, and ban the rescue ranger and jag, so you basically have to play stock.

December 25th 2008. I got the game as part of the Orange Box a year after it came out for Christmas. You still couldn't rotate sentries back then, and the unlocks were almost non-existent. Even hats wouldn't come out until the following year. I have one of the *original* Gibuses. I still boot this game up once in awhile just for fun. It hasn't gotten old on me.
I started playing in 2008. I remember a MOSTLY stock TF2, when they first added hats I played so long hoping for a random hat drop and finally got my Soldier's Stash (and eventually a Demoman's Fro). It was a fun time; a good balance between complete stock and a secondary option you may not expect, the occasional hat because most people only had a couple and were lucky to get them on a class they played, while nobody had a complete understanding of "proper tactics." Just get out there and have fun, do some stupid shit and play the objective in between.
i think from watching this video (i didnt get to play during it ☹) i feel like no hats is neat but also you don't get the same idea of who's who, so its hard to find those fun little stories in the middle of games where one person sticks out to you, not really because of the hats but the hats make them more identifiable
Look at the sad state of TF2. We are so deprived of real updates that when servers were down, it felt like an update, or at least some fresh air, resulting in a, actually, good experience.

When I played the game during the item server crash, it made me realize how the well TF2 as a game was designed, how I missed out on he experience of the game expanding with new updates, and how the pace of the game was really different back then. The game is cleverly balanced in a way that is complicated to replicate, and class interactions between the enemies and teammates were more clear. The most interesting observation I found is less people fought in flank and team fights in choke were more popular compared to now where people can run load outs to stay away from the medic and do crazy flanks and bombs. I found myself appreciating this game more after this funny incident.
I don't play much TF2 anymore, but seeing this brought a smile to my face. It's absolutely soul-crushing that this is news, but, strangely enough, if you look at it at just the right vantage point, it becomes incredibly hilarious that this is news. My favorite thing about the stock games is seeing all the dead ringer crutch spies hold w and cloak as soon as they take damage only to immediately get folded
im so used to playing defensive with the cloak and dagger and yer that i suck with dead ringer
this is a sentiment i dont understand, how can the dead ringer be a crutch when its worse than stock?

Spy sense is a thing for basically any player that’s played tf2 for a while? If you have ample enough time to observe a teammate it’s very easy to spot a spy unless they’re trying their hardest to act. The problem is that enemy spies will always look at you. They can’t help being suspicious.
i..i think those spies are just really fucking bad at being spies 💀

my favorite feature in wargaming games is the ability to turn other players skins off entirely.
i want hats. i just want quality control.
Not me, ive paid way too much money for them :(
I started playing in 2008, so medic, pyro, and heavy had unlockable weapons already, but there were no hats, so it felt a bit like this.
I started in 2028. Don't believe me? Just wait.
That's exactly how chet falizek described it.
*laughs in just not playing until the item servers came back*
It was so hard to get used to stock after playing heavy weapons guy with no socks on with the family business but i only use 3 shots until i have to reload, subclass, oh yeah i also can only play every saturday.
I know we want Valve to take us to the good old days. They just sent us to the old days

Yeah wish I made it in time, and thats the first time I wanted to come to a broken game.
For the most part you could mostly only place sentries in their 'designated nests' like how snipers had their own bunkers.
there should be community servers that are just like this 24/7 (if there aren't already)

The best part about this item server outage was playing medic. It was so nice to not worry if the other medic has shot 20 more arrows than you and gotten 3 übercharges thanks to that, and it was all about actually managing your heal targets and flow.
Loved it...
im pretty sure arrows dont charge uber...
@@florinflorea3995 they do, but provide less charge per hp healed than a medigun. I know the crossbow used to actually build uber faster than the medigun, unsure if this is still the case after the jungle inferno change
@@sleepydogboy5599 It doesn't give less charge, but rather its Übercharge build rate is affected by the same scaling that the medigun's healing itself has which allows for crit heals
So while in practice most people you'll be arrowing won't give you the same charge as the medigun, it doesn't actually have *explicitly* less charge rate
So if you ever find someone who has crit heals and is hurt (could definitely happen at like, the front lines of a payload defense round when someone's waiting on a kit to respawn or anything similiar), then it's still better to arrow them in regards to Übercharge building
But let me know if I'm mistaken or using inaccurate information

For the lack of cosmetics, yeah sure everyone being the same makes disguise a bit better... but everyone is already used to spychecking so disguises aren't strong in a first place, so not much effect here. In fact I'm not sure if occasional "missing head" issue is fixed by lack of cosmetics.

I love this.
I want this to be an occasional event.
This is like those offline servers but with online people
This video made me feel very melancholy for old tf2. Thank you Uncle Dane
We really went back in time to the first TF2 update to get hats off the MENU.
That’s right we went back in time to the first TF2 to get HATS OFF THE MENU

@@defenestratorr goddammit I missed the update
Uncle Dane never feels like Uncle Dane when he's doesn't have the jag equipped
Look at the sad state of TF2. We are so deprived of real updates that when servers were down, it felt like an update, or at least some fresh air, resulting in a, actually, good experience.
Yeah, it looks pathetic
12:35 the wrench hits sync with the music a bit, love it
Love that your fight between that soldier was broken up by a sniper on each team, Y'all got told to 'break it up' at the same exact time and I adore it so much.

I was watching an uncle Dane video a couple days ago and decided to start playing TF2 (don’t ask why I was watching him before ever trying the game, he’s just fun to listen to) and I decide I’ll give the game a try, low and behold I somehow chose one of the oddest times in the history of the game to start.
I am hoping for more news in the future. Please keep us updated from the ground, Uncle Dane!

As someone who is on Uncletopia all. the. time., I would definitely enjoy stock mode servers as an occasional option.
