  • In this video we'll create a vehicle sound using engine loops and autopitch modulation. We'll also use Blueprint to generate parameter values to drive our sound.

    Just wanted to let you know that I have watched the whole UE4 FMOD "tute" series and I loved it, thanks so much for making these. The videos are very well done, good video and sound quality which makes it fun to watch and easy to follow. I hope there are more to come, thanks again Sally-anne !

    An updated version of setting up a car engine would be very appreciated. The new version of FMOD is different to this video and I can't find the Attenuation settings anywhere, so my engine sound always sounds 2D in UE5.

    This is an absolutely excellent tutorial, it's made the fear of programming an engine sound look almost trivial and to be honest I could listen to you telling me the detailed steps on how to wiggle your toes (or something mundane like that) 😂

    I don't understand. At 15:30 you saved the file and some how these sounds were imported right into UE4 to use in FMOD audio. Whenever I added the FMOD audio component to my car there were no audio events available. Am I doing something wrong? How do I import these sounds into unreal?

      After a million hours i figured it out. The newer version of FMOD requires you to validate FMOD in UE4 (at least I needed to). To do this you simply go to the help tab at the top left, click it and select the validate option. After validation you go back to FMOD Studio and build again and wallah! the deed is done. Geesh so much trouble to add sounds. Hopefully things will float my way now.

    If your sounds dont show up in ue4 try validating Fmod from ue4 help menu

    There is no autopitch modulator available for me: just Random, AHDSR, and Sidechain. I made sure I am working within the RPM parameter. Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

    Does Fmod Studio have any specific speech tools? (database management, string support, localization, etc). How about Interactive Music? If so, could you provide a tutorial vid?

    I did everything exactly as the video shows, but when I hit play, all the samples are starting to play at once :S I am using Fmod Studio 1.09.01

    How come when you press play on the RPM section of your engine, your first audio clip automatically plays? Mine doesn't. I have to forcefully move my rpm knob on FMOD to get it to trigger any sound. Because of this, I have no engine idle sound in my game. Fix?

      set idle's minimum pitch to 1 in Fmod

    Hi I've seen your videos but i don't find where i can find engine samples in fmod. I look for car engine sounds like onload, offload... I need wav sample. thanks a lot

      check the audio bin, you can find them on disk from there

    I´ve got a serious problem with Fmod: any sound files I import sound strange after importing,looping and autopitching them.Is there any special method to keep the sound original?

    Great vids, thanks very much for posting! Question though, what happened to the Vehicle Audition tool in Fmod Designer? This was a great way of previewing engines using more realistic physics properties before going into the game.

      An equivalent to vehicle audition is coming soon. In the meanwhile, you can use a control surface to drive RPM and Load simultaneously. Also with live update, you can make changes to the event in FMOD Studio while driving around the level.

    Have you ever noticed how when you're driving in a car and go from an open space to a space where there are reflections - say buildings or rocks on the rise of the road - the sound reflects off these surfaces. How would you add this to FMOD or Unreal?

      +Ryan Ashton (Ryan Ash) In game engines, 99% of the time "ambient zones" or "reverb zones" (depending on the engine used) are implemented. In Unity and Unreal engines these are done in-engine in the audio settings. You can just add an ambient zone and tweak the settings accordingly, then whatever emitters you have in that zone are affected dynamically in real time.

    Hi. I am on FMOD 1.07.02, the most recent version, and nothing happens when you click on the parameter tab. Is it his a bug in the new version? I don't know how to view my parameter properties. It works on older versions of FMOD. Is it just me or is it a bug in the 1.07.02? Thank you!

      +Wes Devore Music Hi Wes, please note our response on this one in the FMOD Q+A. This functionality was changed in 1.07.02 so that parameter properties can be reached by clicking on the parameter name in the transport control above the tabs. www.fmod.org/questions/question/parameter-properties-not-showing-up

    dividing last speed with delta is not giving a value when you see thru a print string it always comes back zero is there something else im missing i followed thru every step as the video. Or is there another way of figuring out the load? can someone collaborate..

    Awesome tutorials! Do you have one on creating an NPC Dialogue System? Would be super helpful.

      Dialogue system is simply calling the audio file before generating the text. Then either tweaking text values to make it generate one word at a time, or just the whole thing. Its not very complicated. You usually have a trigger volume parented to the character you want to speak with, and reference the action key to activate the dialogue box and disable movement controls.
      If programming: do it as an IF statement, so IF dialogue box Image = true disable movement. or else just enable movement. Play around with it man. Would be good practise for an artist to mess with blend-shapes.

    awesome job with the FMOD tutorials for UE4. Can't tell you how useful they are :-).
    I've come across a problem though... I tried and double-checked everything, and maybe I'm just
    blind, but I can't seem to get the "Set Last Speed" variable in UE4. It just doesn't exist and I don't seem
    to have created it in the process.

      +Albatros NCS Better late then never... but you need to create a new variable (float) yourself in UE4 (My Blueprint/Variables) and name it LastSpeed. Then you can set this and use it elsewhere in the blueprint. It wont show up as a component in the list until you create the new variable. Hope this helps.

      +Graham David Southern offload means off throttle (there is no load on the engine), onload means on throttle (engine is fully loaded).
