Loved the final episode. A dream of a dream. Blackthorne never reached 'home' never died an old man in Tudor digs with grandchildren, with pale blue eyes. He was holding Mariko's crucifix. That was 'buried' at sea with Fuji's husband and son.
No need for a battle, Crimson Sky had done it all, made by the bonfire of Mariko's actions and sacrifice.
Best show I have seen in years. Now to binge watch it with my wife.

Kinda felt like he was killing that future that time he turned his Kodachi on himself to perform ritual su!c!d3 to protest what is Happening to Anjiro; Mirroring what Mariko-sama did; and it being his first fully selfless act in the entire show.
Never expected this to end the way it did, was convinced this would be the final but no, the story continues. Bring on season two !
@@Nebuloid1 This is actually how the book ends, so they don't really need to make a season two unless they are going to start writing their own story.
Immediately after watching episode 10, I was unhappy about not depicting the Battle of Sekigahara, but when I remembered Toranaga's line to Nagakado, "Those who have never experienced warfare want to fight immediately," I knew that I had Nagakado in my heart, and at the same time I realized how great he was for winning the battle without spilling blood.

As much as I agree with your sentiment, the battle wasn't ended without bloodshed. It was the biggest battle in Feudal Japan's history.
They were just showing in that scene how Ishido wouldn't have a unified force to crush Toranaga in the battle that was to come!

44:28 Toranaga was not trying to avoid being Shogun, he was actively manipulating his way to it. Like in the first episode's monologue where he remarks on the bird hiding in the sun.

Yes, she played there as a kid and was there coincidentally on the day of that filming.

It already has 9.0/10 on IMDB. Anna (Mariko) only had 6 acting credits before this, i am a HUGE fan of fresh faces. Like House of the Dragon young Rhaenyra actress, then boom they get thier moment. 💗 it
The scene where Fuji and John was sitting together was beautiful. That simple, emotional, powerful scene was able to even make me cry.
Thank god Fuji survive in this show compared to her fate in the novel, it’s way more fitting for her after all the deaths
Marikos death didn't affect me like a lot of people but that scene broke me. It didn't hit me just how important she was until that moment. I definitely cried
Mariko explained the meaning of the eight fold fence, he finally understood, to be sat there and hear without listening, to be present but far away inside.

I’m glad the show didn’t heavily rely on action, I know some are sad that we didn’t get enough action but I think the show was meant to be about the diplomats not the impending war which is why the show runners stated it was more like house of cards and not game of thrones
Not a different cross, present Blackthorne is dreaming about a future Blackthorne, a future he gives up. Anjin never returns, he thrives, marries and dies in Japan.
Some added evidence of this. Both "future" scenes took place while Blackthorne was badly concussed. The title of this episode is 'Dream of a Dream.'

Yeah thats why Anjin said fuck it when he hears his old voice in the dream talked to him before he wants to commit seppuku, he gives up on that dream.
I love that he and Fuji-Sama had such a beautiful moment together, burying their lives at sea, before she left.

That's the same place that the author James Clavell's actual ashes were buried after he passed. Apparently the scenes of Ajiro were shot in the actual bay in British Columbia where the Clavell's lived.
Yeah, the scenes between Fuji and Blackthorne were my favorite from this episode.
What a finale! This show is a masterclass in how to craft perfect television! 10/10 final episode for a 10/10 show! I'm gonna miss Shōgun so much!🌟✨️🎉
After watching the episode twice, I conclude that the flashfoward is not really a flashfoward but a dream of how blackthorne sees himself in the future. Not in japan anymore and still holding on to the cross (not letting go of mariko). He lets that dream go when hes about to commit seppuku but doesnt really let it go until he drops the cross in the river.

最終話を見てまた1話から見始めた。
何度見ても、細かな動き、目線、唄、言葉に散りばめられたその先にあるストーリーに一片の無駄が無く、見れば見るほど深い感心に包まれる。
血を流す戦いも人の裏切りももう沢山だという虎永の思い通りの素晴らしいエンディングだった。
この時代に生まれ、この素晴らしいショーを見る事が出来て幸せだった。
アクション重視にしなかった制作陣の選択に乾杯🎉
In a world where violence and war is idolized i love how the art of war ( The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. - Sun Tzu) the strategy, the brains before brawn is depicted so masterfully in this series and how cunning Toranaga really is in his secret heart. Makes me think too of the idea of martial artists or samurai in this case where the battle has already been fought, won or lost in the "mind" before the swords have been drawn, which i really appreciated. It's so wonderful, the whole series was so beautiful, full of poetry and meaning, amazing cast, crew, the clothing and sets and the whole timing, pacing of every single thing was so impeccable and beautiful. Just an absolute masterpiece ❤❤❤❤
Mariko to Fuji in the first episode : “Let her hands be the last to hold her son.”
Fuji to John in finale : “Let your hands be the last to hold her.”
So many full circle moments in this episode. This was a masterclass in storytelling and cinematography from beginning to end. I’m gonna miss these characters!
no doubt. Yoboshige being prisoner and held "trial" at this village where he once reigned. Blackthorne - once in shock by seeing someone attempt seppuku - attempting it himself. and of course... the man who "doesn't want it" - subtly tipping his hand - and fittingly getting the final shot of the series, before the word SHOGUN stamps across the screen. Poetry.
The first episode ended showing the back of Toranaga's head probably telling us that the 'Shogun" was merely an idea, an ambition inside of his head. Now in the last episode it ends with Toranaga's back once again but this time it zooms out, showing the land beyond telling us that this man in front of us was finally the shogun of Japan, no longer an idea, or an ambition - he is, SHOGUN.
And those mountains are his wings, like the falcons he used the entire time. The union of man, land, sea & sky in one perfect shot.
Crimson Sky very much is a short poem, two words, so powerful and ambiguous in nature. One may take it as war with the aftermath being a city ablaze from the attack brought forth under the guise of night. Another might see the burning of the words left by Mariko, a barn fire lighting the future of Japan for the Shōgun to rule.
I was emotionally wrecked when Usami Fuji was pouring the remains of her husband and kid into the sea with John Blackthrone. There really are not many TV series or films that deserve all the praise for nearly a perfect display of capturing such beauty while holding historical value that not many have been aware of, but this series was truly an absolute masterpiece.
The twist that a lot of people seems to be missing is that toranaga was "actually" the bad guy. In retrospective the accussations that ishido an the other regents make about him making moves to gain power in episode 1 where almost certantly true. Its almost certain that he was the one that manipulated marikos father to kill ochiba's. He's morally no better than any of the antagonists. Hes just more proficent in the game.
Well he (Tokugawa in real history) did bring an era of peace.
What a finale! Going to miss watching this show. Deserves all the awards and love!
I didn't feel we lost out on the big battle; the personal conflicts throughout (of mind and heart) and the sacrifices along the way were captivating and harrowing enough to convey the emotions of what life and death mean without the addition of the literal war creating chaos and destruction. This show excelled in so many areas; the dialogue and even the strength of poetic communication moved me beyond expectations so many times. I blubbed every time Mariko's name was mentioned-silly me. The scenes of Blackthorne with Fuji on the water and then John giving Buntaro the hydration gave me the closure I needed for this story.
Thought this was amazingly tied out. Loads of callbacks to earlier episodes, such as the Anjin finally understanding a purpose larger than himself by being willing to give up his life for the villagers, but also at the same time, showing that he has been “tamed” by Toranaga. The whole Ochiba arc coming to a close - Toranaga was planning to ally with Ochiba all along and we get the answer to what it would take for lady Ochiba to forgive Toranaga for his hand in her father’s death - by making Ichido murder the only person Ochiba loves more than her father, Mariko. Answers the question asked in ep 1- what kind of man rules over this place. A mastermind.
tbh one of the best shows i've ever watched, the acting, the scenery, the audio, what they delivered in the show i'm speechless
The flashforward at the start of the episode was just a feverish dream of Blackthorne’s that never really happened …. the rosary he was holding in that dream was actually given up to the waters of the bay, so he couldn’t have had held it in the future …

So impressed of the level of comprehension from the viewers who are not Japanese. To understand the intricacies and the unspoken thoughts and mind in times of historical changes of the Sengoku Jidai.
A quality content in hands of devoted creators and artist resulting in Unforgettable cinema touching our hearts and soul making us realize how beautiful life is in a moment of our short existence.
It’s a testament to the times of accessibility of so many information exchanged cross cultures that made the world be able to unite in enjoying this masterpiece which was in itself a remarkable East meets west joint production of highest level in every detail.
I'm sorry, but when I look at many commentators, I don't know that the meaning of complex words and the quiet time between the lines has the same meaning as the lines, so I overlooked the unrestrained remarks. Among them, there are a few commentators who enter the story and breathe their air together, and one of them is you. I was able to share my feelings and with you two.
I really want you to visit my country, Nihon. The humanity of the two of you has a very delicate sense of the other person's heart, which connects the contact with Japanese people naturally, softly, and strongly. Japanese people like humanity like you. I'll be waiting for you someday.
Ah, I loved this show so much! I'm really going to miss it. What a finale. Seeing the far-reaching impact of Mariko's fateful sacrifice as well as Blackthorne's fate coming around full circle as he relinquishes his presumed future was bittersweet and beautiful.
What a fitting finale!

William Adams {Blackthorne} DID win. And lived to see his victory.
The Portuguese were expelled from the Japans in, IIRC, 1613. Adams lived until 1620.
Not quite. The Portuguese were not expelled from Japan until after the Shimabara Rebellion (1639). They did however gradually lose influence over the region because of the eyes of the Tokugawa Shogunate watching closely.
The bay in British Columbia where Blackthorne and Fuji spread her family's ashes is the same place where James Clavell, the original author's, ashes were spread after he passed.
It has nothing to do with the budget. In the 1980 show and the novel as well the battle of Sekigahara is only mentioned. In the over 1000 pages including book in fact just in 11 lines. Shogun is and never was about the war on the battlefield but between and inside the characters. Those who find these boring should go on with watching the superheroe flicks which shaped their minds regarding writing for the screen.

The subversion of expectation was the whole point. Toranaga outsmarted the viewer. That being John in this case.
You need to read the novel to understand why its a great story. You cannot put Game of Thrones for comparison of this good story. If you read 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' set in the Three Kingdom era of China you find similarities in some way in Eastern cultural thinking. Toranaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu) hidden ambition is similar with a Chinese strategist of the Wei Kingdom by the name of Sima Yi. Tokugawa Ieyasu and Sima Yi has many thing in common one particular is 'patience', which in the end made them the final victor. The Sima Clan taking control of Wei and unify China and created the Jin Dynasty that lasted for 155 years, the Tokugawa Clan defeating all rival clans and unifying Japan creating 250 years of peaceful golden age of Japan the Edo Period.
I just realised that Yabushige ironically fell off the same cliff that he climbed down in the beginning of the show. It didn’t matter that he tried to climb the cliff of power, his ambition sent him downwards anyway.

Just a poetic ending, no big battle just character acting on the highest level.
I just love how the show doesn’t feel like it needs to have big action and battles to show the conflict of this story, it is mainly just people having dialogue with each other and man is that dialogue so beautifully written and maybe the best part of the show

One of the best tv shows ever, one of my favourite stories ever. I did not need more action, I did not need more anything. Totally satisfying. And I particularly enjoyed being on this journey with you both Jon and Andrew.

Fun fact, the lake that we saw them scattering the ashes in was the same lake where James Clavell's ashes were scattered. His daughter was there when they filmed the episode, and she couldn't believe how everything had come full circle.

Yabushige and Toranaga smiling at each other in the end. He got the best end he could have gotten, realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently.
Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show.
They actually managed to tie up most, if not all, loose ends without sacrificing the pacing and the rhythm that they built up from the past 9 episodes.
I honestly can't be the only one who thought of Toranaga as nothing more than a textbook psychopath since episode 1...
I love the show AND the character btw, but honestly, when Mariko died all I could think of was "Toranaga did this to her (and everybody else) just so he could become Shogun. Why is everyone blaming Ishido?"
Sure, Ishido was the one who called the hit, but Toranaga was the one who literally manipulated and groomed her for years into serving him and dying for his cause. I also fully believe that Ochiba guessed correctly that it was Toranaga who convinced (read: manipulated) Mariko's father Akechi into killing his liege all those years ago, also as a part of his own ambitions.
And a final bit of spoiler from history (I only learned it after watching the whole show):
Toranaga eventually kills Ochiba and her son.
In real history Yodo and Tokugawa aligned houses but they were never really friendly. And when her and her son committed seppuku he was an adult with his own child.
But the elimination of the family line of your enemy was just common practice back then. In a lot of cultures including in the west.
One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Toranaga threatened the village all as a test for the Anjin. Wild! Rememer Yabushige said the same thing about Toranaga: "Why tell a dead man the future?" in an earlier episode.
That last shot of Toranaga is absolutely brilliant. Those mountains are his wings, like the falcons he used the entire time.

Thirteen years after the time of this drama, in 1613, John Sallis came to Japan seeking trade, carrying a letter of state from King James I of England.
His interpreter was Adams. During these 13 years, his Japanese became proficient and he began to behave in a Japanese-like manner.
John Sallis described Adams as follows: "He was Japanese in every way.
"He enforced Japanese customs in everything he did. We call him "Japanese with a European face.
Anjin also described him as "big in attitude, arrogant, ignorant, and a greenhorn! This was the reason why Anjin did not return to England, despite receiving permission from the Shogun the following year to lead a delegation back home.
For those who wonder what happened to Blackthorn, based on what happened to the real life Anjin Willam Adams, after settling in Japan, Adams married a Japanese woman, although there is no clear evidence of her name and background in either Japanese or European historical records. Adams and his Japanese wife had a son Joseph and a daughter Susanna. Some accounts describe Adams having other children with concubines or mistresses, but no such children were named in his will.
He was officially named a samurai by the Shogun and lived his life in service to the shogunate.
I just wish we had seen that in the show.

The dream was him as an old man but it ended after he let go of Mariko's cross. This show is juat brilliant writing.
But having the attempted seppuku scene before he lets the cross go would have left a lot of people assuming there was no way he could do it because they saw him with the cross in the future

Beautiful ending
Ok, I do think that knowing the actual history helps interpret some of what happens, but ignoring that, think about what we see. When we see Old Blackthorne, we can interpet it as either an ancient, dying man clinging to the tokens of the most meaningful time of his life, or we see can see it as an injured Blackthorne dreaming of himself in this sad future. He pictures this future (or remembers the past as an old man) before his key decisions of the episode, finally saying "f*ck it" and letting go of that future. Then he lets go of the past along with Fuji, and looks to a future built on the here and now. So that sad death in England is not his destiny after all, as Toranaga predicted.

In historical fact, Toranaga ended the era of warfare between samurai and brought Japan the last peaceful era by samurai that lasted for 250 years. The Last Samurai" depicts the end of that era of samurai.
Great analysis, you guys. I love how you do not shy away from being vulnerable for the characters, too.
Also, it's important to note how Ochiba and Mariko were torn apart by their father's affairs, and yet, here they were again in the midst of another man-made conflict...but now they get to be key players.
Also, Toranaga is one heck of a scheming man. He's gooood. But he's not a saint. I like that the show did not really paint him out to be this straight up good guy. Even to the end, he was playing Blackthorne.

This is easily the best show of the year (so far), I would be surprised the the team behind this don't do something else. Maybe adapt the next book in the series? Ever so slightly gutted we didnt get to see the Battle of Sekigahara but ah well. Brilliant finale regardless.
technically there's only really one option in Clavell's Asian Saga for them to Adapt, he only really wrote one other story set in Japan, a loose sequel set towards the end of the Tokugawa (Toranaga) Shogunate, Gai-Jin set over 250 years later in 1862

In Japanese mythology, the Namazu (鯰) or Ōnamazu (大鯰) is a giant underground catfish who causes earthquakes. The creature lives under the islands of Japan and is guarded by the god Takemikazuchi enshrined at Kashima, who restrains the catfish with a stone. When the Kashima-god lets his guard fall, Namazu thrashes about, causing violent earthquakes.
Hence why Yabushige went looking for it in the pond
One thing I missed from the original is anjin is given the contract for Kiku as part of his vassal and he gives the contract to omi so they can marry

Thanks for this journey, folks. If it helps, in the book, we don't get to see the battle either. The series was faithful to the author's story, including the ending. The adaptation did really a better job there, actually. In the book, the conversation between Toranaga and Yabushige is the narrator's point of view showing Toranaga's Secret Heart. And he does admit at the very close of the book that he is willing to kill the Heir, and he feels that "It is your karma Anjin-san never to leave Japan, just as it is my karma to become Shogun." It's the very ending of the book, the very first time, the only time, that he does want power. Toranaga is human, but also, you finally grasp the sheer scope of his cunning and the length of his game.
That was a beautiful episode, my favourite scene was fuji & John on the boat, had a grown man in tears!!

The Dream of a Dream is old Blackthorne he will never leave Japan. Old. Blackthorne had the Chain from Mariko and he throws it into the Sea so it can't be real it's just his dream
The flash forward was in his mind. His fate changes. He buries Mariko’s cross. He actually embraces the new culture. He has shed much of who he had once been.
Should be noted, Yabushige calls Blackthorne as Anjin-dono, not Anjin-sama.
Interesting. In the book Blackthorne did try to commit seppuku, but in front of Omi and Yabu in the middle of the story, when he was told that whole village would be killed if Anjin wouldn't learn Japanese tongue in a month. It was Omi who stopped Blackthorne, and Yabu rewarded his nephew for that.
I missed that at first. But i find it much better to put it in the end like this.
I am watching this right now and the epilogue the story starts off with OMG it's already giving me the goosebumps. I am loving how this focus more on the diplomatic aspects than action which we don't get to see a lot, but this show changes it for the better. The bridging of cultures in Shogun is portrayed so beautifully throughout each episode and the finale it brings it all together perfectly. The ending with Toranaga looking towards the sky says it all as he becomes Shogun.
Its hard to believe a 10 episode show made me feel so much for the characters.
Oh! Also! Foreshadowing throughout this production has been *chef's kiss* brilliant. The very first scene with Toranaga in E1 he's hunting with a falcon and he talks about her and how deadly she is because she hides herself against the sun (e.g. uses being Japanese as a cover) and she strikes her target fiercely and without mercy. He then later rebukes his son with talk about how all men are falcons he flies against the right targets and they do his hunting for him all on their own. And at the end, he releases the falcon he had been using in the beginning, to commemorate Mariko's death. Because Mariko was the falcon Toranaga was talking about. We begin the whole story with Toranaga about to walk into a known trap in Osaka, already thinking about flying Mariko in a battle he anticipates in the sometime future.
The whole story is the story of how Toranaga uses Mariko to become Shogun. And how Mariko uses Toranaga to become avenged.
Blackthorne just happens to arrive at the right time to be judged useful, and we the audience get to go along for the ride. But it's Mariko's story from start to finish. Blackthorne is just a reluctant, sometimes petulant narrator.

関ヶ原→大阪冬の陣→大阪夏の陣までやって欲しかった。

これだけ深くきれいに終わると続編はいらないと感じるよね。でも、大坂の陣があれば落ち葉の方側の感情ももっと表現されることになって、絶対面白くなりそうだなって感じる。
本作は原作に沿ってるし、原作だとここで終わりだから、シーズン2は限りなく可能性低いのは分かっている。
唯一の希望は、真田さんが続きがあるかどうかは「観客の反応次第」と言ったことかな
@@taka-is4qx I see your point! Yes, it ended beautifully and could easily be left that way. I think I’m more impressed by Hiroyuki Sanada’s ability to bring the production together under a clear and distinct vision. I hope he produces more, no matter what he makes!

In real life, Tokugawa considered Japan to be at peace once he had the Heir and Yodo (Ochiba) kill themselves in 1615. At his mausoleum in Nikko, there’s a sleeping cat statue (nemuri neko) as a symbol of peace.
What happend to John? Did he died happy or kept manipulated by toranaga?
@@jackhilton4285 The story loosely follows real life events, the real English sailor William Adams became an advisor and vassal to Ieyasu Tokugawa (Toranaga). He was never permitted to leave Japan, but was treated as a Lord, he was given a Mansion, land and sort of a government allowance i guess.
He married a Japanese woman, had 2 kids, built a fleet for Toranaga and dealt with a lot of Foreign commerce and Trading. The book doesn't really follow up beyond this ending, from what i can gather.
@@jackhilton4285 He got married to a Japanese woman and had two children with her. I think he became a captain for different expeditions across Southeast Asia.

There are so many callbacks to previous episodes. For me, Mariko said Fuji's hands were the last to hold her son, and then Fuji, in turn, said that to John over the last connection to Mariko.
I saw this comment somewhere, but Blackthorne and Fuji leaving their loved ones over the side of the boat mean that it is as simple as looking out to the sea to remember them.

I get why the show never showed us Toronaga's side like the book did. But it left many people with the impression that his side is the "good" side. When it reality it was just a side.

@@RyaiL in 1614 or 1615 the real Toronaga (Tokugawa Ieyasu) had to put down a rebellion of loyalists to Hideyoshi's (the Taico) Aire. He besieged Osaka castle and the Aire ( Toyotomi Hideyori,) and his mother Yodo-ono (Ochiba) were captured and forced to commit seppuku

Honestly, as the show went along Toranaga was ultimately a self serving character who seeked ultimate power under the guise of peace.
Yabushigi's Catfish line really merrors him too in general. like Yabushigi the Catfish is a fish that lives in the water but also occasionally walk on land but in the end returns to the water just like Yabushigi.
We have partaken in one of the great miniseries of all time. Television at it's finest and fullest of potentials realized - new gold standard.

Old Blackthorn was just a dream. It was how John envisioned himself. But in the end he let go of that dream and accepted himself in Japan. He would go on to die in Japan never going back
It says a lot about Toranaga after he stepped in to stop Anjin's committing of seppuku. Perhaps in that moment, he betrayed a sense of genuine friendship, just as he once had with Hiromatsu. He couldn't save him due to it otherwise revealing his true intentions to Ishido, but he could save Anjin as he already had a valid reason to move into a war footing following Mariko's death.
I can see what you're saying. However, if this is the case, the writers buried the lead too deep. I never saw Toranaga really befriend John. As far as the show goes, John was always just a useful tool/puppet of Toranaga.
I've seen comments from the book readers that Toranaga DID actually view John as a friend, but yeah, this was NOT very well conveyed in the show.
I saw JOHN respect Toranaga, but friends...nah.
I didn't think the "flashforward" was that, I think it was he dreams for his future to return and die old in his country. He renounces to that dream the moment he left the crucifix go.
From the reaction, it doesn't seem like you guys remembered the call backs to episode 1. Yabushige said the same line as Toranaga did, why tell a dead man the future? Also. The last thing Mariko said before the baby was killed was, let her hands be the last to hold him. Also, we learned in the 1st episode who Toranagas spy was the entire time sending messaged by the Falcon.
