Definitely like the fact that you all are getting to the basics. So many people don't get how many little things need to go right to make a good recording. Gain staging is SO important and people don't think about it as much as they should. Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Very helpful, thank you! I've realized this is an integral part of the music making process and makes things much easier to control and everything sounds much better.
Hey there! This can be toggled in the preferences under Preferences > Display > Display Volume As As for the master clipping, this is due to the summing of the sound. Although no tracks are clipping, all of the tracks playing together can create overloads due to the buildup of all the sonic information!
Hi..this is what I have been looking for and talk about...i don't have the gain knob in Mixcraft 8 I will use a meter pluging or loudness plugin to match the level...i will try it out🤙🤞👌
Hey there! These numbers depend on the scale/size of the mixer in some cases. If resizing the mixer doesn't fix that, feel free to get in touch with our support at support.acoustica.com and we'd be glad to assist you!
Could you do a video on how to use a Novation LaunchPad Pro in Mixcraft 9? It certainly is not plug and play, it needs alot of midi learning, and I still cannot get it working good. I'm talking LaunchPad Pro, not LaunchPad mini, I see videos out there for that. Thanks
We can definitely note it down on the suggestions list! We are also working to ensure that the latest models are natively compatible with future updates of Mixcraft!
Can you show us anything about effects ordering and the importance? I know this may be a little advanced. But would definitely be useful for seasoned individuals.
Nice tutorial. You forgot completely about normalization and how it pertains to gain staging. It would be cool to implement gain staging like pro tools where you can drag the gain up or down on the clip itself. May I suggest you do a video about connecting outboard harware (like Vocal processors or compressors) into Mixcraft? I don't know how to do that with my ID 14.
Hey there! Normalization wouldn't actually really be a part of gain staging as it would normalize the recorded audio. If you didn't gain stage properly it would set it to an arbitrary level, but also increase the noise floor along with it. Although it's useful to normalize a clip that's recorded properly, it's not necessarily a part of proper gain staging practice. As for gain staging per clip, this is already possible actually - to do that you can click and drag the white handle in the center of a clip to raise or lower the volume. We can note that suggestion down as well for a future video!
Hey there! This option is part of the new mixer improvements of version 9. However, you could use a 'gain' plugin instead as an insert on your track as a workaround. You should be able to find a free 'gain' VST online!
Hey there! All of these tips would apply for vocals as well, there isn't really a difference in the process beyond ensuring that each passage has good gain staging in the case of an especially dynamic performance.
So my meter signals need to hit my fader unity gain spot or at -18 on the rms meter which is the so called sweet spot? And do my VST meters if they clip effect the insert signal meter?
Generally speaking you want the signal level to match the level of the fader in order to use the full fader travel path effectively. As for clipping within plugins, you would want to avoid this if possible by using their 'output' or 'gain' control to ensure the level isn't too out of control!
We can note that down for a tutorial! In short though, you can automate the pitch bend of a synth, or instead use a synth with portamento with a legato only mode so that only overlapping notes slide!
I'm sorry I'm just confused as to when should I touch my faders if I already got the signal good during gain staging is it after plugins I can touch the fader?
I wish the master track could switch the project to mono. And i wish the master meter was more detailed. extremely basic. I do love mixcraft, but those to things could really make it that much better. Also if mixcraft had a VST specifically for drum mic bleed like the drum leveler, this software would be bought by everyone.
Hey there! We can definitely note that down on the suggestions list for a future update! In the meantime, you could use something like the free Melda Productions bundle to access metering tools as well as a stereo tool to collapse the master track to mono!
@@acoustica222 yes I have a vst that does that for me. Just a nice option when it's on the master mixer or by the meter. Just some button somewhere so I don't have to open another vst. Not a must have just convenient. Thank you for replying. Love the DAW!
Hey there! The meters in Mixcraft that ready 9,18,27 would represent the level relative to 0dB. So, 9 represents -9dB and so on. The numbers next to the fader handle (6,12,18) represent the adjustment level in dB and 6 would represent -6dB.
The numbers showing on the potentiometer/slider are not the same as the numbers in the meter. So when you say 0db, isn't that really like -9db or so? Isn't the zero on the slider basically arbitrary? I have seen equipment where "zero" is-3 -6 or -12 or -18. I get what you are saying about being able to use the full range of the slider, but at first I was very confused by your interpretation of zero DB.
Hey there! That's correct, the meters here are not actually reading out at 0dB but rather using the 0dB line as the reference level for unity gain. Mixcraft has the meters set to -14dBFS for unity gain levels.
Hey there! We actually demonstrated that in the Mixcraft University series! You can find the video about that here: th-cam.com/video/KQnzFhdmjHs/w-d-xo.html
Hey there! These tips would apply to any version of Mixcraft! The main idea being that you just want to ensure that your gain levels roughly match up with the fader. So, you can use some kind of gain plugin if needed!
Gain Staging is... It would have been a great idea to define the terminology before explaining the application. And you should have gone over the fundamental physics associated with the Gain Staging. This is why I hate these videos; everyone is treated like nimrod, equally. Here we go again, Unity Gain is...

I've been a loyal Mixcraft user for years. This video helps even me the experienced user.
Amen to that!
Very helpful, thank you! I've realized this is an integral part of the music making process and makes things much easier to control and everything sounds much better.
It really does help, the best eq alot of the time is the fader, getting everything leveled is 80% of the mix fr
Love the tip of recording two separate takes 1:48
Glad it was helpful!
This is great! I've never paid much attention to gain before, now I will. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Just when needed!!!! Thank you for the amazing video!
No problem at all, we're glad it was helpful!
The best explanation so far.... thanks
please make a video about vocal mixing with kareoke?
How do you get track volume fader to be db rather than volume?
Also how come the Master volume clips when none of the tracks are clipping?
Hey there! This can be toggled in the preferences under Preferences > Display > Display Volume As

Is the gain knob only available in version 9 ? I have version 8 and I don't see that option.
I normally put compression on my vocals with a channel strip drugged Dean stage before compression going into the door or gamestage after
How do you get your XLR mic to sound to clean? I have a Scarlett and also an at2020

guys is this only for instruments or also vocal audios? the settings/mastering from the video or is it different on vocal audios(RAP)?
Needed this since a long time

Is there ever a time where I should move my faders from unity gain to control volume or signal?
Hey there! The faders would generally only be used for the mixing process, so for the process of gain staging you generally don't need to touch them.
Ok so why and some do some engineers move the faders down in a static mix?
I'm sorry I'm just confused as to when should I touch my faders if I already got the signal good during gain staging is it after plugins I can touch the fader?
