Nicely done...yes, pucker factor in gusting cross-wind take-offs and landings. Just know your own personal limits/comfort factor (I probably would have scrubbed the flight and went up another day) For the fuel pump, I personally learned: on - to prime the carb, off - for start; on - for the duration (taxi, T/O, flight, and landing) only turning it off in the event of nearing the surface during an emergency landing. With the bi-plane and other tail dragger experience, I would think you have gotten good at 'walking the pedals' for helping control the bouncing around on gusty landings.
