Anyone who says Warlow lacks passion should be shot!! He is brilliant, he voice has SOOOOO much passion in it, it moves people!! Warlow is the greatest singer of all time!!
Anyone saying Anthony Warlow is more of a "technical" singer, weak and lacking emotion, surely has not had the very great pleasure of seeing him perform live. I have seen him several times & let me tell you, when he lets it fly, he blows the doors off! He has a spine-tingling, powerhouse voice which is nothing short of perfection (if he ever hit a bum note in my presence, being the consummate professional he is, he hid it effortlessly). My favourite performance was at the State Theatre in Sydney for his "Back In The Swing" concert tour in 1993. His voice filled every corner (I should know...I was in the back row of the uppermost tier!). This "Anthem" clip is from Ray Martin's "Midday Show" a few years before - I believe he was promoting the release of his first album "Centre Stage" at the time.
totally agree. I went to see Dr Zhivago when it was playing at the regent theatre in melbourne and I was sitting a few rows from the front and his voice literally shoots through you and it brought me to tears by the end of the show. So much power :)
Frankly, even for those of us who haven't seen him live, I hear so much emotion in his voice. I first heard him in Jekyll and Hyde and was wowed. It felt like I was watching someone become a character, but all I had was the audio. He's a great performer
I was living in Oz and remember this performnce on TV and I WAS HOOKED and have been ever since. ANTHONY, YOU ARE THE BEST. I get goosebumps the minute he opens his mouth.
Just LISTEN to him sing....listen....there is so much passion in there on top of the technique! The colors he is using aren't on accident. Those come from a purpose - to express his heart in the song - bring the audience to tears who were there to witness this. Technique simply allows the singer the ability to do this. What other musical theater men can you name that have the same capacity/ability? What...a handful ever? It amazes me how wimpy little singers want to tear apart ever great voice.
This is interesting! I love Anthony Warlow. He's probably my favorite male singer of all time. However, certain singers "own" their song. Anthony owns "This is the Moment." Tommy Korberg owns "Anthem." Michael Ball owns "Love Changes Everything."
He sings so effortlessly it's amazing. I have to agree that Korberg doesn't stack up vocally to Warlow. Every time I have heard Warlow live, andin every recording that I have heard, he is consistently brilliant vocally, not to mention and extremely expressive performer.
Well done Anthony! What a great example of good diction in singing, so often these day, I think I am listening to a foreign language when in fact they are singing English.
we met in the early 90's and he had already performed this so I guess it was before that by some years ... I am guessing he is mid 20's in this. I believe he is among the best music theatre performers in the world
What a voice!!! (and he looks SO young in this clip.. and it was prior to his illness so he has all that wavey hair). I saw him perform in Phantom this week and he was wonderful as always, though I think his voice has actually got better with age.
I saw him as Daddy Warbucks in Australia earlier this year. I have had the pleasure to see many great performers, but none quite like Anthony Warlow. He absolutely blew me away with his brilliant acting and powerhouse voice.
Anybody here thinks he looks more than a little bit here like Joey McIntyre or Aaron/Nick Carter? Seriously, for someone who was in his mid to late 20’s, he looked more younger than that here, 15 maybe, which clashes with the deep voice. But again talented dude all the way.
You guys are ALL missing the BEST version of this song ever sung, which is in a different league than even Josh or Warlow's. It is Linda Eder singing it on her Broadway, My Way, CD. It will leave you speechless and stunned. After you've gotten over the shock, count how many seconds she holds the final note, you'll be stunned all over again.
i completely agree. sometimes i feel like i'm the only person that doesn't go crazy for Tommy's anthem. Anthony just blows those Gs out of the water. incredible.
I totally agree with you! People who think Anthony Warlow sings lame should be beaten up. Well, perhaps not beatened up, but at least they should know they know nothing of this kind of music. Anthony's not lame, he's just got dignity enough not to throw himself around on the stage like a scald hen. His voice and expressions is sublime, and perfect as they are. I love him, he's the best singer I have ever heard!!!
@yajunwindbell He didn't "battle with cancer in order to sing" - he battled with Cancer in order to LIVE. Certainly singing has always been a large part of his life but let's neither trivialise nor dramatise anyone's battle with cancer. I can certainly also understand someone believing that, in general, Anthony is more of a "technician" as a singer ("one-take Tony" as they used to call him) and can come across as cold and emotionless - more "perfect" than passionate.
When it comes to feelings, it's a pure subjective matter and anyone has his own preferences. But you do realize Anthony is better in technique aspect. That's good, coz technique is a more objective criterion.
@lrthorne I so agree. I'm loading all three versions into my iPod, when it turns up, and I can listen to them whenever I want to. I think I've fallen in love with this song. I'm quite sure I've fallen in love with their voices... well, Anthony's and Josh's, anyway... Then again, is it shameful for me to admit to minor crushes on both?
Actually for voice alone I love Warlow's rendition on his centre stage album the best of all, but seeing him singing live on TV is a huge bonus, especially for his being young before cancer. I heard that he was actually asked to play Anatoly when Chess was planning its Melbourne season, but sadly it's canceled. He could be a great Anatoly.
He'll be in "Annie" on Broadway as Daddy Warbucks, the same character he's playing on Australian stages now. It'll be his Broadway debut and I think "Annie" starts in November this year on Broadway, so you'll have a chance to see him perform live. He is amazing live, so try and see him if possible. :-)
Thanks for reminding. It's the making of the original concept recording of Chess, right? As I've said, Tommy is a great Anatoly, probably the best I've heard. But for Anthem I'd still cling to Anthony, and no one can make me switch so far.I just prefer a classical voice for the song. Okay, it's a pure matter of taste and I'm a Anthony Warlow fan.
I´ve sunged this song many times and It´s in the key D-natural. Listen to Tommy Körbergs original recording here on youtube the high notes are G first a short note before the instumental part then the long one "where"(would I start)then two short ones before the end.
@lrthorne I totally agree. I love this song, and I don't really care who performs it. And I could listen to all three of them, one after the other, all day long.
Why all the fuss about Tommy vs. Anthony vs. Josh? They all sound fantastic and bring their own styles to the song. I could listen to any one of them all day long!
Why would you think it's fake?...I think he might have done some hairstyle, but Anthony got gorgeous blonde hair at that time. Though he has lost his hair now he won't bother to wear a wig. And for the year, I believe it's in 1991, when he is still in Phantom.
For me, Anthony's got the passion. If you don't like it, that's ok. But to question whether Anthony likes to sing? Nonsense. How come one who battled with cancer in order to sing doesn't like singing? As I've said You are free to state that you like someone else better, but you don't need to bash others to praise your own idol.
Lol. I guess you've listened to Anthony Warlow fairly more times than I listened to Tommy Körberg on youtube since your first comment here 4 months ago. I'm glad that you've made progress in the perception of Anthony's performance over the time, and as long as you enjoy coming back to listen to him, I have no objection. :-)
yajunwindbell i know this is gonna sound really picky and technical but in music of the night it only go's up to a Ab not a high A although im sure he can make an A sound just as wonderful
in my opinion anthony's version is much better. he's my favorite vocalist, bar none. His vvoice is just so rich and passionate. and his range is absolutely incredible! i can just sense so much emotion in his voice, no matter what song he's singing. :)
Anthony sounds perfectly in tune to me and he can definitely hits A in Phantom of the opera effortless. IMO Tommy Körberg didn't make every note sound effotless either. I agree with theaccadaccafan. Just give him a break okay? Even if he sang it more perfect than this you still wouldn't prefer him to Tommy.
Huh? You totally missed the point of what I said. I was referring to the strength of her voice to be able to hold that final note for so long and make it sound beautiful for that length of time.
Anthony sings it well, but in my opinion Körberg sings it more passionate and has a stronger voice. Körberg is the one I'm used to hear singing this so that affects me too. But Warlow has a really nice voice ^^ (people seriously have to stop arguing and fighting over who sings this the best, it's a matter of taste. :S )
Under Josh Groban's version someone suggested to listen to Anthony Warlow singing Anthem. so I did. it is good and clear but it seems to lack the power and emotion of Josh's version I watched another to, sorry don't remember the name he was bald and it was a newer version. that version also had more power and emotion it to that Warlow. but Josh was the first I saw in this case I thought it was better Just my opion of course
Lol, I can not picture Warlow as Freddy yet. Freddy's character strikes me as more self-willed and arrogant rather than cold, while Anatoly's character appears to be more sophisticated and cool considering his defect and possibly his win (or not, it depends) in the end. Besides, Freddy is more of a rock style. But I'd love to see Warlow in Chess,if possible, either role would be fine.
Seriously, this man's voice is.. incredible. Can't believe I actually got to see him as the Phantom.
Anyone who says Warlow lacks passion should be shot!!
He is brilliant, he voice has SOOOOO much passion in it, it moves people!!
Warlow is the greatest singer of all time!!
My favorite singer, period. I’ve adored him for over 20 years.

Wow, I'm totally envious of whoever went to his "Back In The Swing" concert.

This is the single greatest male vocalist I have ever heard in my entire life.
He’s up there with Josh Groban
@@fleta4112no
Technique is flawless. his emotion comes through his voice! Very powerful!
Warlow is amazing. he has invincible technique. incredible!
Flawless voice and beautiful looks
This man is a god, I can't even find a word that describe the ecstasy i feel when I listened to this.
just beautiful. so effortless. his voice is a phenomenon.
One of the best singers ever produced in Australia!
I was living in Oz and remember this performnce on TV and I WAS HOOKED and have been ever since. ANTHONY, YOU ARE THE BEST. I get goosebumps the minute he opens his mouth.
I'd go so far to say at this is the definitive rendition of ANTHEM. Anthony Warlow is just terrific.
Josh Groban has now surpassed him.
@@fleta4112 lol
@@fleta4112no.
Been listening to this song all evening by different singers, one after the other.... and this one gives me chills like no other XD
Whom are you ranking on top from these singers? Groban's is nice too, a little more understated.
I remember watching this on Australian TV when it was first broadcast all those years ago....it blew me away then and it still blows me away now......
How handsome he was, and still is
listening to this for the millionth time and my heart still skips a beat when he hits that end note ^^ LOVE IT!
I love Anthony Walow, he blows me away.
Dayum best performance of that song I've heard. Such control!
Just LISTEN to him sing....listen....there is so much passion in there on top of the technique! The colors he is using aren't on accident. I completely agree with you. As Judy Garland said “that song’s been sung”.
Incredible and passionate performance!!
Truly, one of the greatest to ever sing this song. More singers could stand to be like him.
I've never heard of him. What a great singer. Can't stop watching this. Gives me chills every time.
He sings so effortlessly it's amazing. I have to agree that Korberg doesn't stack up vocally to Warlow. Every time I have heard Warlow live, andin every recording that I have heard, he is consistently brilliant vocally, not to mention and extremely expressive performer.

omg young Anthony Warlow is such a dreamboat.
I have just recently discovered this magnificent singer.I am in love with his voice
Ditto. Discovered a year ago and am amazed. Nobody else as good.
Best male musical theatre voice out there.
such a beautiful man..i adore him.
Absolutely Brilliant!
He's a ridiculous singer. The control he has over his voice is phenomenal. He's just an incredible talent.
I can't find anyone who does this as well as Mr Warlow, just the best !!!!!!
Anthony Warlow is just...out of this world. As far as I am concerned, he is the greatest male vocalist I've ever heard...and I've heard a lot.
Extraordinary ❤️
Omg this is awesome
What a voice!!! (and he looks SO young in this clip.. and it was prior to his illness so he has all that wavey hair). I saw him perform in Phantom this week and he was wonderful as always, though I think his voice has actually got better with age.
Anthony Warlow is outstanding, I have seen him perform live several times and he can lift the roof of the building!
I saw him as Daddy Warbucks in Australia earlier this year. I have had the pleasure to see many great performers, but none quite like Anthony Warlow. He absolutely blew me away with his brilliant acting and powerhouse voice.
what a great voice!
same here...been a fan for years.....
This is what I want my voice to sound like. For the longest time, I thought I was a tenor but now (at age 36) I think I'm more of a lyric baritone.
this is so amazing
I'm not actually a fan of him in general, but this is BY FAR the best version of this song that I have ever heard. Just. Tears.
OMG He is so handsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
his voice just rings. Even then....what a natural!
Yes, love this song and Anthony! Thank you so much for posting this vid! :-)
An amazing voice & he just keeps getting better
he totally owns this song. his build to the final phrase and then note is perfect. christmas carol? a likely story. this is what it's about: control.
I would adore to hear him sing this today!!!

This is why this dude is considered the Daniel Day Lewis of MT…
what a voice! effin awesome!

i loved it
The moneyshot note is effortless. I love him.

Wow this is really good. It's not Tommy but it's real darn good. =)
@territheseeker Hallelujah! Three such brilliantly talented men performing it only means there's that much more to love.
@lrthorne I so agree. I'm loading all three versions into my iPod, when it turns up, and I can listen to them whenever I want to. I think I've fallen in love with this song. This should be the most unusual comment I've ever heard about Anthony Warlow. But, it's cool too that you've got such an exceptional opinion.
Its the Musical Chess. Writen by the guys in ABBA
Who knew season 1 Jack Bauer could sing so well!
He is coming to Broadway in October to play Daddy Warbucks in "Annie".
Agreed. And it's perfectly legitimate for an actor to play Anatoly in a more sophisticated way. Stig Rossen is one example of that.
Why would you think it's fake?...I think he might have done some hairstyle, but Anthony got gorgeous blonde hair at that time. Though he has lost his hair now he won't bother to wear a wig.
And for the year, I believe it's in 1991, when he is still in Phantom.
Screw 'liking'. I 'LOVE' it.
I can't stop write comments on this video, I love Anthony warlow so much and I can't stop saying that!!!!
