A monorail is a railway in which the track consists of a single rail or a beam. The term is also used to describe the beam of the system, or the trains traveling on such a beam or track. The term originates from joining "mono" (meaning one) and "rail" from 1897, possibly from German engineer Eugen Langen, who called an elevated railway system with wagons suspended the Eugen Langen One-railed Suspension Tramway (Einschieniges Hängebahnsystem Eugen Langen).
Colloquially, the term "monorail" is often used to describe any form of elevated rail or people mover. More accurately, the term refers to the style of track ~Wikipedia

Moscow Monorail is about to be closed and there's can be a elevated tram line or park like High Lane Park from NYC. The reason of possible closure is high expenses and low income from this line (marked as line 13 in metro network)

Tokyo Monorail is my favorite. It is fast and reliable. It even has a rapid service that does non-stop service between Hamamatsucho station and Haneda Airport Terminal 3 station!
How could you forget the Chiba Urban Monorail in Japan....? 15km and 18 stations

I've ridden the Seattle monorail the most. While very popular with tourists, there are people who park at Seattle Center (near the Space Needle) and commute to work downtown! The downtown terminal is at a four-story shopping mall and connects with the underground light-rail tunnel via elevator, so one can actually take the combination of the two systems to the airport.
where's the san Paulo monorail in brazil and Chongqing in china that happens to be the longest in the world..
Another enjoyable top 10 - I am always happy to see a new one :). I also like the suspended Shonan monorail in Japan. It covers 6.6 km between Enoshima and Ofuna. I has to go up and down a series of tree covered hills, which adds some extra interest to the trip. The Haneda Airport monorail in Tokyo and the long Osaka monorail (over 25 km I think) also come to mind.

Yes, it definitely is a worthwhile investment as it will reduce traffic congestion, pollution, speed up transportation, and thereby promote commerce & tourism.

My favorite is the São Paulo (Brazil).
I'm curious about the lack of the Disney monorails. The Disneyland/Walt Disney World monorail systems were based off of the Alweg design (Disney purchased the rights to use the design, but built the train themselves). The Las Vegas monorail system started off using the old Walt Disney World Mark IV trains, so they use the same system, too.
There's also a couple of maglevs that could be considered "monorails". One in Shanghai is the current fastest maglev, though Japan is currently working on a much faster one to replace their Bullet Trains. I don't think the latter can be considered a monorail since it sits in a U-shaped track (not really a "rail"). I know of a much older maglev in Japan (I _think_ it was for a World's Fair), but other than being a maglev, it doesn't seem to be very impressive.

Like the last one, it can be built over existing structures, like streets, rivers etc. I don't think any has ever reached anywhere near the speeds promised though.

Fr, it's like a normal metro in form of a monorail and has a huge ridership plus has a station inside a building. He should've include that.
18 mph is closer to 30 kph. But yeah, that's slower than streetcar speed, which makes no sense given that it's isolated right of way.

Tokyo Monorail !!!! This amazing Alweg runs at the fastest 80Km/h and the longest 17.8km in Japan. It was made in 1964.

In the summer of 1964 I lived in Wuppertal and rode die Schwebebahn or die Strassenbahn daily. My American friend and I wanted to say "monorail" or "Einschienenbahn" in German, but that word was not really used. Just before I left Germany, I got an invitation to visit the Alweg Bahn test track near Köln (aka Cologne). 50 years later, 2014, I rode the Alwegbahn in Seattle. At the other end from the Space Needle, the station is in a food court. I'll vote Seattle as #1 because of the Thai food in the food court. 😀

My favorite monorail is the Tokyo-Nara monorail. It's launched in 1964 for the olympic games, has strechs in tunnel, achieve a 80km/h speed. One os it's strech was changed to launch a new station near the airport. Unfortunately this monorail didn't was mentioned in this video. Line 15 - Silver from São Paulo Metrô is very wonderful too!

Like other commentators, I share your view that Wuppertal is a worthey number one. But viewers not familiar with Wuppertal need to know that MOST of the line is built above the river. Your shots concentrate on the short street section in Vohwinkel..
The line opened in 1901. In the intervening 120 years a number of other (usually short) monorails have opened. But i think we can now safely conclude that monorails are never going to make a large contribution to urban public transport.

@@chou3595 infelizmente aqui no Rio a realidade é diferente. Tinha projeto de linha 3 do metrô que ligaria Niteroi, São Gonçalo e Itaboria. Provavelmente será substituído por corredor de ônibus o que é um retrocesso! 👀Ⓜ🚝

Wahrscheinlich Wuppertahl! SHAMEFUL as most monorails systems offer end viewing for the public, Las Vegas has NO end viewing to see the single concrete track! They MUST install some windows in the bulkheads to allow for public end viewing!
Years ago I tried to argue for Seattle to EXTEND their current Duewag monorail from their Science Centre to Seatac International Airport, but fell upon deaf ears. At least it has been preserved even though it has only two end stops. At least currently their light rail does go from downtown Seattle to Seatac.

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn follows a curving path over the river and over urban streets. The suspension design allows the cars to tilt in the turns and passengers feel no side forces. The ride is a lot more scenic than a subway. The length is 13.3 km and the maximum speed is 60 km/h = 37 mi/h.
