I'm 83...had my 16 year old g-dayghter listen to it & now we're Wild Cherry fans together...I smile when I hear it! Always one of my favs!
The music was so much better back then.
Need I say more?
I'm 62 and thank God, aliens or whoever is up there for letting me exist on this planet when music was at its greatest.
Thats funkadelic, baby! 🤩
Classico nunca sai de moda...Tamo junto!!!
Beautiful !!
This song packed the floor whether white or black club 71 year old black woman and still listening in 2024 ❤
👌💐🙏
How I remember that song sung by. Wild Cherry I love the 70’s Sure miss those days!
I'm 62 and thank God, aliens or whoever the hell is up there for letting me born when music was at its best
Likewise I miss the 70s those times were great peace out
70's 💯 BEST music! All my kids know the good stuff! 🤣😊
All these years later and this song is still an absolute banger.
This song and Hollywood Swinging are my favorites from the disco era.
ha you have no taste
I concur!
This song will always be a big time banger peace out
Yes I love this song
Herb smoking music from back in the day! Cannabis and old school funk and classic rock never gets old ....70's music never gets old!!!
I’d imagine 😂
true
As soon as you perm your hair and get an Afro. You know you're gonna have soul. 🤗
Proof that soul is colorless. Some ppl are just born with an extra helping of it imo.
A lot of it is definetly nuture, how we were raised plays a part in how strongly were able to express ourselves
I LOVE the way you explain this!
If you love this song, you have GREAT taste in music and can probably dance very well!!
I'm black and these boys jam!!!!!
Proof good music is good music!!
100% true.
That " Good music " is funk!!
The licks are a bit brash, the beat a bit loud, but the soul is still there. Where'd it go today?
Play that funky music black boy 😄 🤣
Music tends to be a universal language. There are people in Mongolia jamming to Metallica, one band (The Hu) did a cover of "Sad But True".
This is one of the greatest songs to come out of the '70s. Period.
it was definitely, ONE.
Without a doubt!
Brings good old memories🤣
This song was hugely popular in "the hood" for a while and at its peak I happened to be on a bus full of black people in Baltimore and they all sang me this song (I'm white). Even the old ladies knew the chorus and they all made it into a delightful prank, of sorts. It was a very special experience which I cherish.
That's heartwarming!
it is a very black sounding white band...
I spent about 30 years of my life thinking the lead singer was black LOL
You spent a whole lot of time not paying attention to the music you listen to then lmao
Great story!
That song NEVER gets old!!!🎤
I have told the person in charge of my funeral arrangements what music I want played. It's mostly traditional Christian hymns and such, but when the memorial is over and it's time for everyone to view me for the last time I want them to strike up "Play that Funky Music" to get everyone in a happy mood. This is like one of the greatest songs ever, especially from the 1970's. 1976, sixth grade. We were so cool. We may be old geezers now but we are still cool when this is our theme song.
OMG Me too!!
Great idea! I like it!
Great funeral song.
How I wanna go:
I want to "lay down that boogie and play that funky music till I die."
Lol! Yep!
Best decade for music!!
A few years ago, on Bourbon st, in New Orleans, a band with the stage facing the street started to do this tune... Well, me and hubby had to dance and all of a sudden we were joined by oh 150 or so of NOLA's partying tourists and we danced and movin to the groovin!!! It was so good we hollered until they played it again. And everywhere you looked, up and down the street, we were all dancing and enjoying each other, like it was our last night on earth! And then, we all went our separate ways, saying goodbye, thank you! and love you! Young, old every race, for a moment in time, we're the best friends in the world.... One of the best nights of my life and a cherished memory... Of course every time I hear this song, I'm back in Bourbon st, in my favourite city....
Great story… would have danced too if I was there! Thanks for sharing… I can see it in my mind… a great song bringing out joy in people
Thank you! You would have loved it! Dancing with 150 of your closest friends and beautiful ladies. One day I'd like to go back and see if these memorable pleasures can be had, just one more time. Made everyone feel alive and 17 again. Stay safe and keep enjoying the good stuff.
These dudes are the funkyest group ever 💪🏾♥️💯🔥
George clinton
Super tight & studio quality vocals... doesn't appear to be dubbed in either. Impressive!
This is what you call music!!!!
The bass player has me tripping with his dance moves😂😂🤟🤟
Mans was on that good 70's blow
He did that when he first started singing that song.
Today would have been my sister's 57th Birthday & this was her song! She would just break out dancing & happy. Her name is Pamela & she went home 2 years ago, miss her dearly. I will be playing this all day dancing & happy.
What a wonderful memory of Pamela!
I wish I would have known you and your brother Pamela, we sure the hell would have been funking out in every way! I'm 62. RIP you funky, beautiful soul.
What a Beautiful memory of your sister ❤ so sorry for your loss ❤
One of the cornerstones of Funk. A timeless masterpiece. 🎉
I miss music like that, you often hear it in grocery stores around where I live and it is all i can do to keep from singing along and dancing down the aisles.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES ! I STILL play it in my car ! (AND I'm 78 !)
With this song, it is simply impossible to be in a bad mood.😄😎
No exaggeration, you could not get away from this song in the '90s. It was at EVERY party, wedding, school event, dance... everywhere around me. 🤘🎶
And thankfully it still is. I was at a friends wedding last month where it is was all country music except this song.
@@24avenged24 I play bass in a South Georgia band. 2/3 Country, 1/3 ClassicRock, and this.
I'm a jazz musician. And I remember when this hit the radio in 1976--everybody stood around and listened. It was different.
I was just a little kid in the 1970's but I remember how cool everyone was back then --- you would hear this song and "Get Down Tonight" in every disco club and skating rink!
70’sss too! 🎉🎉
70s pop music was so much fun. Glad I had it as the background in my childhood.
I love this song! Then again, I love 70's music! So glad that I grew up listening to the best music ever!
ME TOO!!!
Me, too.
You got that right!
Same!
ME 2
You can tell he grew up around brothas I’m sure they was proud when this dropped lol what a banger!
Good music is good music no matter skin color.
There were several white bands we thought were black artist. Wild Cherry/ Average White Band were two of these extraordinary funk bands. They sure knew how to make music to dance to. Great stuff. Great memories!🤗😍
Hall and Oates did a pretty good job, too!
KC and the Sunshine band were a hot item at one time.
Michael McDonald from the Doobie Brothers sounds like a black guy!
'We" was everyone on the planet (except those close to the band!)who had never seen them before hearing their music on the radio for the first time.@@MeMyselfAndI-xw5yj
I don't know about Mike McDonald, but Mickey Thomas of the 'Elvin Bishop Band' sounded black when he sang, 'Fooled Around and Fell in Love'. Even black people thought he was black!@@kerzytibok3211
This song made The Vocalist Rob Parissi a Millionaire! Deservedly So!
I'm 74 years-old now and I'll never forget this song back in the day!!! Everybody was dancing, (or trying to) when this song was playing!!
im 16 now and i jam to it
I m 60 and what a time that was!
Right On!! You're never too young to jam to the music!@@walmartbubbles1019
The s 70 s has the best riffs of all time! Don t stop kid you re smart
Late 70’s discos for me 💃 🎉🎉
We had a linebacker in high school that sang this in the locker room every day after practice. We played lots of good music when we were working out, too. Earth Wind and Fire, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, KC and the Sunshine Band...
Man, we had good music when I was growing up!
We certainly did have the best Music 👌🏻
AGREE 100% WITH YOU! MOST MUSIC NOW IS "NOISE".
@@jerryrasmussen7655the capitalization tells me all that i need to know
I couldn't agree more!!
The bass player's hip wiggle at 1:38 is incredible!
That's Donnie Iris.
A little funky move, reminds me a bit of prince
Lmao, read this right at that point in the video.
😂😂😂👍
🔥
No matter what year is right now !
This is one of the best song ever !
I’m genuinely surprised this video hasn’t gotten the HD treatment like a lot of other popular songs from the era. It REALLY needs and HD remaster
It’s more than worthy!
This song is way way ahead of its time.
Omg this bloody song gets me on the dance floor everywhere 😂
1:37 that drummer was having a good time indeed
😂
OMG 911 HE IS HAVING A SEIZURE 😮😂😂😂😂😂😂😝🤪😭🤣
Never forget the first time I heard this at age 12 on a warm sunny Phienix area day, in a bedroom in our house with alternating strands of dark blue and mold green short-shag carpet, in 1976. I was hooked and still get jacked up every time I hear it. You remember certain events and when and where you were.
I'm 60 now and wow...that day is crystal clear.😅😂 Average white Band also did it.
*Phoenix
Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces" just gets me every-time.
Loved this song, seventies music is the best. Back than I thought I was a dancing machine, today I can hardly walk. Time passes much to fast but the memories live forever.
I walk every day realizing it won't last forever.
Me too, just had a knee replacement

Singing so well while playing a guitar
Keep keeping it funky, thanks for the wonderful music, have a great Christmas and New year. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Not only was this one of the most popular songs of the 1970s, but of all time. Wild Cherry was busy throughout the 1970s, but this was the group's only single that cracked the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 -- topping the chart. But, obviously, it was certainly one of the better funk/soul mainstream numbers that were also easy to dance along with. The funky bass work and above-average guitar offerings earned the band some well-deserved acclaim.
oh big dear guy stole this song
When I was younger my dad always used to play this with his band and he played it at his and my moms wedding 😂😂😂😂 every time I heard it on the radio up until I was about 10, I thought it was him and he was famous 🤣🤷♂️😂
Lol love it
That is the best thing I've read all week! 😎👍
Hilarious man 😁😁😁😁👌👌👌👌👌

A #1 hit for Wild Cherry in September 1976. It also went to #1 on the Rhythm & Blues charts, the Cash Box charts, and the Record World charts. It went to #12 on the National Disco Action charts. Outside of the US, it went to #2 in Canada, #4 in The Netherlands and New Zealand, #5 in Australia, #6 in Belgium, and to #7 in the United Kingdom.

It was definitely played on R n B stations.
If USA hadn't already declared independence hundreds of years earlier, they would have had grounds to do it then for this song only reaching number 7 in the UK! 😵💫
I loved the song in 1977 as a teenager
Over 40+ years... And i still bump this song 🎧 even in my big Rig 🚚💯‼️👍🏽😃😃😃😃😃

Was born in 2004 and this will forever be my favorite song of all time. Listened to it almost everyday when I was a kid on my dad’s old boombox. Will always jam out to this shit, especially 1:38 lol

Time has a way of reminding us of what passed really was precious. But the music, our music, will survive. What a legacy.

Loved dancing to this back in 76, in the nightclub. 70 now so not much chance of dancing to it these days but I can revel in my memory. Brilliant.
We were sweet 16 and loved that song so much, singing as loud we could in the car. Lots of flash backs and memories..... oh no we will never forget those years and the good music! ❤

Same here....I am 60 years old and have been listening to the song forever....gee and now I find out its a white boy singing.. lol... I aint gonna tell anyone of my thinking what i previously thought. Heard the song at the skating rink today and brought the moves and memories on.
Whoa, you've been grooving to "Play That Funky Music" since the vinyl days? Now that's some serious funk! Skating rink flashbacks cranking up the nostalgia, huh? Your playlist's got more stories than a bell-bottom-clad memoir 😉🎶💫
I was today years old Wild Cherry was a hard Rock band who couldn't get heard, did this and the one hit wonder is born and this song is FROZEN IN TIME TO REMIND EVERYONE from the 70s to get up and dance!
