    Probably the best song ever that's so repetitive it still doesn't bother you but actually gets better as the song goes. Killer little guitar solo at the end.

    I was a metal head as a teen back in the 80s, so I wasn't much into 80s pop in general. But for some reason I always loved Tears for Fears. They where different in a good way. They are more of a "bridge" between 60's British pop like The Beatles and the late 70s British mod-influenced punk like The Jam, and what later would become Britpop.

      Same here. I lived in England from 1980-1985 (military brat) and found a lot of the synch-heavy bands like Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, etc. had some beats and heavy chord progressions that worked well for metalheads.

    • @mrtveye6682
      @mrtveye6682 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@kingbrutusxxvi True. Depeche Mode was another band that I really liked, even though as a metal head, you "weren't supposed" to like them. :D
      Killing Joke would be another example.

      Same for me. I'm from Chile and in the 80s I was a teenager listening heavy and thrash metal. This was one of the pop song of those years which I really liked. Thinking on those years I think it was because the drum of this song was heavier than the usual pop songs, the lyrics (even if I didn't understand much of it) seemed far from the cheese lyrics of the pop songs of those years and also the general music seemed much darker (which for me meant more real) than mainstream music of the 80s.

      Metal fan here too. I think these groups resonate because they have a defiant, rebellious, and conscious vibe that parallels metal. Metal groups could easily cover these songs.

    So I just hit 50 and have literally been close to 1k concerts in my life. 2 years and 3 months ago tears for fears took the number one spot of greatest concerts I’ve been too. And that was bcuz of Roland’s vocals. I don’t take #1 lightly. If you can my dear-see them. Even my jaded wife was like “holy shit did that just happen!”

  • @sliceofheaven3026

    I think its basically about people who lack empathy towards other people and also about standing by your principles and not letting the people "with the one track minds" control you. Its also a statement about dictatorships and their drive to crush anyone and anything that stands in their way. I think Tears for Fears did a lot of songs about the importance of caring and compassion in general.

    • @taoist32
      @taoist32 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s pretty funny considering most musicians of the 70’s believed that most 80’s music was overproduced.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Infact, most of the instruments used in this song were considered so overused that people (namely Phil Collins) literally put "this isn't a Fairlight synthesizer" on the liner notes 💀

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      FWIW I love Fairlights and DX7s and Prophets and all that good stuff. They're overused because they sound incredible

    "A lot of people think that 'Shout' is just another song about primal scream theory, continuing the themes of the first album. It is actually more concerned with political protest. It came out in 1984 when a lot of people were still worried about the aftermath of The Cold War and it was basically an encouragement to protest." -Roland Orzabal
    "It concerns protest inasmuch as it encourages people not to do things without actually questioning them. People act without thinking because that's just the way things go in society. So it's a general song, about the way the public accepts any old grief which is thrown at them." -Curt Smith

    • @taoist32
      @taoist32 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cold War vibes were still strong until right after the Berlin Wall fell, although it was still on into the mid 90’s. I was 15 in 89 when the wall fell. Talk about a life changing event! And when the Soviet Union collapsed, all the metalheads went to Russia to stage one of the biggest concerts for freedom. It was amazing!

  • @ToABrighterFuture
    @ToABrighterFuture 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    And this, kids, is why you don't gloss over grammatical mood.
    The way they slide into the chorus, overlaying it with the end of the verse, is a very, very slick use of mood. Now, stick with me on this one.
    The chorus starts with a command: Shout, shout, let it all out. Here, "Shout!" is used in the imperative mood, almost as an interjection. But, since "shout" is also a verb, it has an infinitive mood: "to shout."
    So, by ending each verse with an infinitive--"you shouldn't have TO JUMP for joy," "I hope we live TO TELL the tale," "I'd really love TO BREAK your heart,"--they can slide the infinitive form of, "to shout," underneath the verse lyric, flip it to the imperative, and get the song's signature overlapping lyrics.
    It's top-notch songwriting.

    Man, I cant explain the excitement I feel as soon as I hear the intro to this song. Even though Ive heard this song thousands of times over my 37 years. Lol!
    I wish I could say I was GEN X but I missed it by being born in 1987 and being a millennial instead. 😢 But I'd rather that than being a GEN Z.😂 😳 😬
    But my hubby is GEN X born in early 1980. He was 4 years old when this song, "Shout" came out.
    Tears for Fears is one of many of our fav bands to listen too. We certainly love our 80s music and movies. I wish I could have got to live through more of it. But the 90s was also a great decade for music and movies. I'd say the 1980s and 90s was the last of best decades.
    I also have a great appreciation from much older music in many different genres but especially in early rock n roll and classic country music at its finest.
    My mother was born in 1953. And so she was a huge Beatles fan and went to see them several times in concert. She was in love with Paul McCarthy. Lol
    When I decided to learn how to guitar, I took too the guitar really fast and could play by ear.which helped alot. Practically everyone in my family myself included is a singer and musician. Its a gift that has been passed down many generations. Even my great great grandfather was an orchestra leader.
    I remember some of the first several songs I wanted to learn how to play on guitar right away. To name a few, the songs was Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", Johnny Lang "Lie To Me", Scorpions "Rock You Like A Hurricane", The Beatles "Twist and Shout", The Animals, "House of the Rising Sun", The Judds "Mama He's Crazy" and "Grandpa".
    Aerosmith "Jaded" & "Ragdoll".
    Reba McEntires songs, "And Still & Does He Love You".
    ACDC "Back in Black".
    I have always loved a wide variety of music and genres and my list of songs has only continued to grow that I enjoy playing over thr years. But I love the oldies and classics even more. Especially back when you actually had to have raw pure talent and be a fantastic singer or else you didn't make the cut. Now you can suck at singing karaoke snd not sound anywhere near close as good as these legends in the past who sang live and didnt lip sing or depend on auto tune.
    And some of these so called singers sound like a train wreck on karaoke which is why autotune is their best friend.
    So yes, its nice to get back to these legeneds who were pure talent. And in many cases, they sounded even better live even though their studio version was awesome.
    I mean just go back and listen to the Righteous Brothers in the live performance sincing Unchained Melody. It will knock your socks off for sure!
    But man, I just feel the 80s oozing from this song "Shout" and it puts me in a blissed out state of mind. I wish I could Marty McFly my way back to the 1980s.
