This is the best scene of the movie IMO. Burton's Batman was actually a detective. And Keaton is superb, first as shy and defensive and then suddenly aggressive and controlling. And he's mysterious througout. And then the Batman whips his cape up and bats fly, my single favorite moment in ANY Batman movie.
This scene right here is why this is my all time favorite batman movie! No dialogue no overdramatic speeches just haunting music and amazing visuals that pretty much explains everything thats going on in this scene! As the old saying goes a picture can be worth a thousand words! Alot of movies sadly lack scenes like this nowadays
I like Nolan's movies, but some people seem to think a character speechifying about the themes of a movie is depth. Movies generally were not like that in the 80s, and Batman 89 really wasn't all that different from its contemporaries yet it's accused of being shallow.
One can clearly see how beautifully shadows, Light and Camera is used to show emotion and to build the drama. Those who don't understand the Art of Film making could only say that this is shallow.
I love this scene, all the drive to the Batcave is amazingly shooted and the score, my good lord, the score is brilliant! And the best entrance into the Batcave I ever saw in any media.
Batman: There is something else you have that I want. Vicki: What!? Batman: It's been a while since the bat's been in the cave, if you know what I mean.
I always wondered what happened there. They never said, but from the next scene, it seems he drugged her somehow and brought her home and took the film from her camera.
I love how they kept the exact same car and suit for Batman Returns. I hate it when the production crew feel the need to keep upgrading stuff in superhero movies.
And this is still the best Batmobile. I appreciate what Nolan tried to do with his by keeping the Tumbler grounded a bit with reality, but Burton's Batmobile is still my favorite.
1:45 Hands down, one of the best matte paintings I've ever seen (in fact, all the matte paintings in this film are of pure excellency!) Just the right amount of detail to blend perfectly with the live action set and not call attention to itself. Really gives the Batcave that enormous scale found in the comics
I agree. Same as Jack as the joker. I did not realize how scary creepy & nuts Jack's joker was. He truly has no plan. He just does whatever is in his crazy head which changes on a dime. Look at him with viki he loves her yet he sprays acid at her. Keaton is intimidating w/I that distracting gravel voice bale had. Plus u gotta love the first guys in. Keaton is the gold standard. Not saying bale isnt great but a different era different style. Their have been 3 excellent top notch jokers it's like choosing ur favorite kid u love them all differently. Christopher Reeve as superman is the gold standard & cavill is fine but I cant see anyone topping reeve. Or even competing. He was everything & more of superman. Kind but not corny. That's not easy to pull off. Margot kidder is the best lois lane. In the first film her hair makeup & wardrobe was on point. When dinner left & u see his shots vs Lester's u see the difference esp in lois. They did not make her look good at all. I'll never understand why they fired donner who had shot 75% of superman 2 as the salkans were strange at first they were very generous with brando who still holds the record for highest paid for the shortest amt of days shooting. He got that dream back end of the gross. Plus 4 million up front. Donner got a million for both films. Then the movie makes 220 million in 1978 bucks. They were sly in doing 2 films at once. Then they got cheap. They could use Brando's footage bc they paid him for both films but they tried to screw him out of the backend of the 2nd films gross so he was about to sue them so they dropped his awesome footage that surfaced on the Donner cut & had superman talking to his mother ?? Hackman did not come back he was so pissed what they did to donner so they used a voice actor & body double for behind scenes. The salkans were pissed off that donner went over time but he was making 2 films at once for godsakes & he made extra footage that they could sell to tv that was not in the film. Theirs like an hour of extra footage . That's a lot if shooting. The donner cut is great. It's sad they pulled the plug & used the turning back time in the 1st film which he wanted to use in the 2nd but had no time. So his plan was to come up with a new ending. When u watch the donner cut its depressing what might have been. Like how lois finds out is so much better with her shooting him & it's a blank & she says gotcha. They never shot it so used a screen test. Also when he changes he talks to brando & brando gives lois the death stare lol. The 3rd movie is only worth it for Clark vs superman the 4th is horrible.
Note how Burton kept him in the shadows ...and he avoided her attempts to see his face ...then confronted her ...and the cape reveal and bats flying .. Burton was able to keep the mystery and near supernatural aspects of the Batman in tact in this scene. Keaton voice was so effortless and quiet .... definitely desplayed that less is more.
0:24 - that little side glance he gives is super spooky...........this whole drive does a good job of showing Batman is actually an unhinged person , he just happens to fight for "good" but he's just as insane as his rogue gallery
I remember watching this gem with my cousins just being in a mood like wow.. no Batman movie has ever made me feel that way again I’m glad Michael Keaton is coming back
The atmosphere and tension the entire time they're riding in the car is nothing short of insane. I'm not always the biggest fan of Burton's direction and stylistic choices (case in point I don't like a lot of Batman Returns) but there are moments where his brilliance and grasp of a scene and the characters in it are nothing short of amazing. He really is a mad genius, and I don't mean that as an insult.
OMG. Goosebumps. The amount of times I rewinded this scene as a child on VHS just to admire the Batmobile which I loved (best car ever) the theme music and change of tempo as he enters the cave so much adrenaline and feeling. Oh and my HUGE CRUSH on Kim Basinger 😍 Respect to Keaton as a child Respect to Bale as an adult Thank you both 👏
"What people?" There's something haunting about the way Batman asks that. We see his eyes searching and reflecting upon what Vicki is saying. But we as an audience still don't have any damn clue what he's thinking about. It makes him scarier and more unpredictable.
hkr006 Oh my gosh this makes me feel so much less of a freak thinking that, I thought I was the only one! Kind of my favorite thing about this scene, too. Thanks for the comment.
Yeah, i always caught and liked that too, its even a little humorous to me, Like he wants to know so he can ruin em or pay em a little visit and scare the shit out of em, lol
I love how they made use of the lighting and shadows when Vicki and Batman are in the Batcave. Batman's 'face' is never entirely visible. When he is sitting down at the computer and explaining how Joker's poison works, his mouth is visible, but his eyes are blacked out. And then when he sits up and is standing off the side, his eyes are visible, but his mouth is blacked out. That is such a cool detail.
Never noticed before how the set at the beginning of this scene was an obvious homage to The Wizard of Oz. Granted when this movie came out I was 8 so I suppose I deserve a little slack. From that perspective Burton is making an analogy about Batman. We are going down this dark dream like road to meet a powerful and mysterious man but in the end he is just a man hiding behind a curtain. Burton is a genius.
Man, a whole fucking scene dedicated to Batman driving to the bat cave. Purely just here to build atmosphere, and dive into deeper aspects of how Batman operates. Just in the way films are made now, especially big franchises, I doubt there will ever be another scene like this in a Batman film. This scene is pure perfection.
Michael and Tim knew how to make Batman so mysterious :) He doesn't speak much, has a low but still a natural voice... And the score during the drive :)
It looked cool, but was basically a rolling prop that was slow. They used edits and sped the film up to make it look faster. The tumbler from Batman Begins was scratch built, and could go 100 mph. They used a miniature for scenes like driving on the rooftops, but the chases on the streets were real time.
Tremendous style to this film that still resonates with millions of fans, due to the talents and specific eccentricities of Tim, Danny, Michael, and Jack. Dream team!
vicky" some people say you're as dangerous as the joker " batman " scoffs" "he's psychotic " vicky ". some people say the same thing about you " batman "perks up" "what people?" idk that just always made me LOL like he wanted names 😂
This will always be my favorite Batman scene out of any movie ever involving Batman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only was this back when Danny Elfman was on his game as a musical director/creator, but this was also back when the Batmobiles engines spewed Fire. Each Batman has their own pivotal top tier moments, and for that I love them all for their own dichotomy of reasons.
0:32 I know BTAS was inspired by this movie, and Danny Elfman did the score for both, so the two main themes always sounded similar but not exactly the same. I JUST noticed he uses the exact motif that's all over the cartoon in the movie!! This is the part you hear at the end of the cartoon intro, against the image of Batman atop the roof illuminated by lightning. Gives me chills seeing the live action batmobile cruise past!!
The way he quickly reacts to Vicky creeping to peep his identity is not only genius but, hilarious. Almost like he creates his on private simulations alone, to avoid detection in every possible scenario.
How many times has Burton given us a dead forest covered in leaves with Elfman's music. Never gets old. Batman, The nightmare before christmas, Sleepy Hollow, corpse bride.
He was phenomenal, but I guess when you grow up with him as Batman you may be a bit biased, haha. However I don't think any other actor has been able to capture the pure darkness of Batman/Bruce Wayne as Keaton did. He was able to capture that pure tortured soul mentality somehow, even if it was just a look at times. Sure Christian Bale physically embodied the character, but Keaton was him!
This was my favorite film from age 7 to 12 and it still holds a personal spot in my heart and imagination. I feel the same way about Batman Returns. This sequence alone is masterful.
Still the best Batman movie so far and the best scene too, Tim Burton's gothic concept of the Dark Knight, combined with those supreme scores by Danny Elfman, make this movie above from all other Batman adaptations... Yeah Nolan fans, even you don't agree with it.
Let's be honest as much as i love Burton's Batman i grew up with this Batman, this movies have a lot of flaws with the story and the motivations of the characters. Nolan did a better job in that case, just watch Batman Begins and it is a philosophical and psychological story about Batman.
Very good your point of view and it's absolutely respectable, and like you I love the Nolan's work indeed, in fact for me is the best Batman saga so far, of course I mean an entire saga, cause in the other hand, as I said individually this movie is still better than any other one, yeah I liked a lot Batman Returns too and I agree that Nolan's films are gorgeus and I admire the way he could to adapt the Batman world as realistic as possible with all the deep plot those movies have that is not something easy to achieve, but as you say, "Let's be honest", this movie only this one, has all the elements to make it better, first of all, this one reivented the character, of course taking most of what was done by Alan Moore, taking the character to the Dark and frightening world as we know it today, putting it also as a base for the following versions, as an example most of the Batman suits are black among other things. The cast, well I can say that with both Nolan and Burton there are excellent actors, but although Christian Bale is an excellent one and I liked a lot his interpretation of Batman/Bruce Wayne, but I prefer Michael Keaton's, cause I feel less forced than with Christian, as for the Joker, is very harder to decide, cause Heath Ledger made a superb performance and even in a new way and Nicholson, c'mon, we're talking about Jack Nicholson, a living legend at the height of others like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman and simply his Joker performance is perfect as the clown prince of crime, but actually I think that talking about the Joker performance is matter of another discussion, as for the soundtrack, I recognize that Hans Zimmer is a genius and The Dark Knight trilogy themes are superb too, highlighting the Molossus theme, but c'mon again, Danny Elfman's Batman's theme, is simply one of those melodies that defines one character and all his world, in this case Batman, as well John Williams with Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park or Jaws themes; yeah I agree the fact that in Nolan's have more complex arguments and the plot in this one is simpler but enough necessary for it to work, so all that mixed results in this great work and for example is this video that contains all mentioned previously: excellent performances without much dialogue, an enveloping atmosphere, great designs like the forest, the Batmobile, the Batman costume and the Batcave, the sound effects and a masterly soundtrack that captivates you that causes the flaws that you mention are really minimals, becomes forgettables, like that scene where the Joker electrocutes a guy, resulting in the end entertaining and humoristic, but in the end of all, everything is a matter of taste, greetings.
No dude, i also love this movie as it was the first Batman movie i watched as a kid, but Mask of the Phantasm, Begins and TDK just nailed the chracter so much better.
Factually, not true. It is silly and campy (and brilliantly acted in that appropriate style) Adam West as Bruce Wayne has a phone conversation with Batman. The voices have different tones, intensity and pitches. Watch carefully, and remember it had to be done in one take. The writing, the directing, the art direction styles are completely different. Therefore the acting had to be different. Keaton, West, Kevin Conroy and Bale were all different but brilliant! 2:05
@@sirvillar007 and im pretty sure thats how he figured out the combination of chemicals that would be deadly when mixed together, but the press when the make the announcement say the wrong combinations, but it could also be that there were other combinations in that packet
Yea, if you paid attention to the scene he's analyzing which products Joker contaminated, and what combinations of the products activates the toxin. It's not like he's chilling with mouthwash and lotion in front of the Bat-computer as his regular setup, as funny as that would be, lmao.
2:25 I like this Batman point of view, because he is described as a more mysterious figure. You can't see his eyes, you can't see his mouth because of the shadows he uses to cover his identity.
The glare he carries the entire ride in the batmobile was my favorite part of this entire film. He wore it well man. So cold how he said no words but communicated only with his eyes. The score . He left looks like a figure you see in nightmares. The lighting upon his cowl the entire movie is a1 as well. Only batman movie where the lighting makes it seem like hes eyes are lit
While Kim Basinger has blonde hair, Vicki Vale was a redhead in the comics. According to Batman creator Bob Kane, Vale was supposed to be blonde in the comics, and her hair came out red due to a coloring error in her first appearance. Ironically, Kim Basinger would later sport red hair in Even Money (2006).

People who made this film knew the Art of Film Making much better than the best directors today.
Well, technically he hit already as Bruce Wayne didn't u actually watch the movie
In the screenplay it says he says he opens a capsule of knockout gas in her face or something.
@@randypeppercorn1865 Actually that happened in the comic book adaptation of this movie! After all he dragued her
@@62202ify She had already hidden it in her bra.
2:57-3:26 brilliant to have the light shining on Batman’s eyes so that the white of the eye shines only inside of black of the mask like the comics
I love how he turns on the light when shes looking closer at his face
I just noticed that this afternoon
the Batmobile really had its time to shine in this scene
Ryan Jackson 0:44
Sounds like a jet doing a low fly-by. 😎
But they had to shoot at a low frame rate to make it appear faster than it actually was
I love how they kept the exact same car and suit for Batman Returns.
I don’t even recognize it as a matte painting.
Is that painted by the same artist who painted the Gotham cityscape at the beginning of the film?
This movie is 30 years old this year. It still is the best Batman movie ever.
Now THIS is a man I could believe even Superman is afraid of.
Bale was great but there's no Batman like Keaton's. The gold standard.
Absolutely. Michael Keaton is Batman. And that will never change.
Exactly. And if you dont know who the best joker is then you don't know Jack.
didn't need a cancer throat voice either
Robert Pattinson’s gonna be the best version, Keaton’s batman barley even resembled the character
Love the sets in this movie, like the drive through the woods. It looked magical!
Was it just a set or was it filmed on a location?
@@BurkeSchneider that's on location in Britain
@@TheGingerburger Any idea exactly where?

00:00 - 01:23 is one of the best Batman scenes ever!
Great that Burton knew when to just trust the visusls and music, not needing lots of dialogue in the car scene.
This is truly one of the most bad ass Batman scene ever the music and the darkness is so amazing.
0:24 - that little side glance he gives is super spooky...........this whole drive does a good job of showing Batman is actually an unhinged person , he just happens to fight for "good"
but he's just as insane as his rogue gallery
Oh and my HUGE CRUSH on Kim Basinger 😍
Respect to Keaton as a child
Respect to Bale as an adult
Thank you both 👏
"What people?" There's something haunting about the way Batman asks that.
Cause he's neurotic and paranoid. 100% in line with Batman's personality
He's thinking where she stuck that film.
2:56 Batman is so Dark... I really love this shooting. We never see Batman fully.. just a part of him... It's so awsome.
for me, this is the best movie based in comic book, Keaton was great, NIcholson amazing, even Basinger, everyone....Burton did it. Awesome!
I feel like this was the studio letting Tim burton do his own thing with the film but it’s done in a fantastic way
This scene is the reason Michael Keaton’s was the best portrayal.
Dayam. All these years, I knew there was something familiar about that scene. But I never could figure it out. THANKS!
holy cow, its a great observation!
That's an awesome observation!
Any idea where this was filmed? Or was it a set they made with trees and leaves?
Also when Joker says he’s melting was a homage to the wicked witch of the west saying the same thing.
Danny Elfman's Batman score is criminally underrated.
No it's not. It's actually universaly loved.
Not among the connoisseurs. Maybe among the braindead overexcited Marvel man-children who don't know that the world existed before 2000.
Keaton still made the best Batman character in its most realistic form
Man, a whole fucking scene dedicated to Batman driving to the bat cave. Purely just here to build atmosphere, and dive into deeper aspects of how Batman operates.
Just in the way films are made now, especially big franchises, I doubt there will ever be another scene like this in a Batman film.
This scene is pure perfection.
Michael and Tim knew how to make Batman so mysterious :)
He doesn't speak much, has a low but still a natural voice...
And the score during the drive :)

0:33 DAMN! Great moment
Hands down, This is the best Batmobile ever.
100%
It looked cool, but was basically a rolling prop that was slow. They used edits and sped the film up to make it look faster. The tumbler from Batman Begins was scratch built, and could go 100 mph. They used a miniature for scenes like driving on the rooftops, but the chases on the streets were real time.
@@sapphire163 they said in the Batmobile documentary that the other Batmobiles could go really fast, they just never had enough set space to show it

My favorite Batman
The way he quickly reacts to Vicky creeping to peep his identity is not only genius but, hilarious. Almost like he creates his on private simulations alone, to avoid detection in every possible scenario.
His identity almost got compromised she was trying to take his mask off
3:21 - Vicki Vale: “You’re not exactly normal, are you?”
1:21 I like how the audio staff of this anniversary edition added a jet engine sfx as the batmobile comes to a stop. Nice touch!
Right. The older versions, did not have that. They had some kind of a Jet engine sound, but it was different kind of sound and mixed too low.
Agree, but there's a little part of me that misses the V8 rumble from the Chevy Impala engine.
31 years from it's release and still holds up beautifully.. awesome movie!! And it has the best batmobile ever!!!
How many times has Burton given us a dead forest covered in leaves with Elfman's music. Never gets old. Batman, The nightmare before christmas, Sleepy Hollow, corpse bride.
This is the most Batman scene ever!!!
Love it.
Only Tim Burton could think of this!
Ty sir.
i never get tired of saying this keaton is the best batman ever ever
He was phenomenal, but I guess when you grow up with him as Batman you may be a bit biased, haha. However I don't think any other actor has been able to capture the pure darkness of Batman/Bruce Wayne as Keaton did. He was able to capture that pure tortured soul mentality somehow, even if it was just a look at times. Sure Christian Bale physically embodied the character, but Keaton was him!
Keaton created the template whereas other actors try to replicate his performance.
*3:28** "Why did you bring me here?".....batman wants some booty*
(Unzips rubber suit fly)
😂
LOL 😂
This was my favorite film from age 7 to 12 and it still holds a personal spot in my heart and imagination. I feel the same way about Batman Returns. This sequence alone is masterful.
Keatons Batman is a supernatural presence.
The cast, well I can say that with both Nolan and Burton there are excellent actors, but although Christian Bale is an excellent one and I liked a lot his interpretation of Batman/Bruce Wayne, but I prefer Michael Keaton's, cause I feel less forced than with Christian, as for the Joker, is very harder to decide, cause Heath Ledger made a superb performance and even in a new way and Nicholson, c'mon, we're talking about Jack Nicholson, a living legend at the height of others like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman and simply his Joker performance is perfect as the clown prince of crime, but actually I think that talking about the Joker performance is matter of another discussion, as for the soundtrack, I recognize that Hans Zimmer is a genius and The Dark Knight trilogy themes are superb too, highlighting the Molossus theme, but c'mon again, Danny Elfman's Batman's theme, is simply one of those melodies that defines one character and all his world, in this case Batman, as well John Williams with Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park or Jaws themes; yeah I agree the fact that in Nolan's have more complex arguments and the plot in this one is simpler but enough necessary for it to work, so all that mixed results in this great work and for example is this video that contains all mentioned previously: excellent performances without much dialogue, an enveloping atmosphere, great designs like the forest, the Batmobile, the Batman costume and the Batcave, the sound effects and a masterly soundtrack that captivates you that causes the flaws that you mention are really minimals, becomes forgettables, like that scene where the Joker electrocutes a guy, resulting in the end entertaining and humoristic, but in the end of all, everything is a matter of taste, greetings.
i agree with you! best batman ever!
Nolan batman just has better visuals
No dude, i also love this movie as it was the first Batman movie i watched as a kid, but Mask of the Phantasm, Begins and TDK just nailed the chracter so much better.
The first movie I saw when I was 6 years old, still the BEST.
YES
Vicki Vale: "What is all this?"
Batman: "My extreme gaming setup."
Why is Michael Keaton the best Batman? Because he used two different voices for Batman and Bruce Wayne and he was the first person ever to do it.
Also, his Batman voice didn’t sound stupid.
@@henith7850 Like Bale's voice
Same in the DCAU.
There will never be another movie made that is this perfect.
I love the fact that he has a bottle of mouthwash and some care products infront of the bat computer LOL. 2:18
Those are the joker products
Who's here after the flash trailer 2 so ready to see Keaton's batman on screen Again 🦇

The glare he carries the entire ride in the batmobile was my favorite part of this entire film. He wore it well man. So cold how he said no words but communicated only with his eyes. The score . The way she mentions what "people" say the way he looks off searching for an answer when he says what people. This is truly the best batman movie ever made. He left looks like a figure you see in nightmares. The lighting upon his cowl the entire movie is a1 as well. Only batman movie where the lighting makes it seem like hes eyes are lit
My favourite Batman, too :)
The cowl and the whole suit...
Michael Keaton was awesome in both movies
This scene. That Batmobile! The MUSIC!!! EVERYTHING!!!
That's so awesome! Thanks for sharing that
