In 2021, the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), in partnership with its clients, the African Climate Alliance (ACA), Vukani Environmental Movement, (VEM) and groundWork (gW), embarked on the landmark youth-led climate change litigation and a constitutional challenge to the government's plans to develop 1500 megawatts of new coal- fired electricity generation.In the case, the applicants argue that the government's plans to develop new coal plants threaten the Constitutionally-enshrined right to an environment not harmful to health or wellbeing of present and future generations in South Africa - Section24.
'Artivism' is a powerful tool that combines art and activism. To commemorate and celebrate the climate action strides the youth have made towards demanding a fossil-free future, the CER commissioned multi-disciplinary artist, Breeze Yoko, to create a #CancelCoal mural at Bardale High School (Mfuleni, Cape Town), and run an artivism workshop on the 25th and 26th of August, 2022.
