Sal rumour has it that in Greek parabola means different things.One is the Paraboles from the holybook ,a word that means exactly what in math ,it is something that is close to but not exactl representation of something .And this applies to circle too!!so these curves that are almost circlular are called parabolas...HTH.:):)A greek fan!
