- Join me as I show my favorite tips for dealing with a wavy border on a client quilt. This is such a common feature in a quilt that has multiple borders, so it's super helpful to know a variety of techniques for dealing with it.

Thank you!! This was a super great lesson. I used to have problems with wavy borders...not now because, now if possible I cut my borders along the grain. I have over 50 quilt tops ready for quilting, and in two day, I am going to take a look at a HQ Sweet Sixteen used machine. I am turning 65 next May and want to Quilt in my retirement.

Susan! I am so glad I came across this video,, I have a couple of quilt tops that I'm going to be working on that I have already told the client are most definitely not square. Do you rinse and machine dry your batting before using?
I don't, no.
Thank you so much for sharing these tips. Sewing over all those pins makes me nervous though....doesn't your needle ever hit them? Couldn't that dull or bend the needle?
Yes, it could....but I go slowly, and I have never bent a pin in many hundreds of quilts. Don't jinx me 😂
Just watching this video. How did you attach the measuring tape to your long arm?
It's just wrapped around the frame at either end and held with an office clip.
Is the fix for *preventing* wavy border to pin the borders on from the centre out? What do you advise for the construction process?
Measure and determine the border length first (my preferred way is to measure middle and both sides and take an average), then cut, then pin. It’s virtually impossible to simply feed a long seam into the sewing machine and have both layers feed equally, you have to manage the fit. It’s easy - but proactive.

Hi Susan: This is a great video, do you square up and cut the excess and bind the quilt for your customers?
Glad you enjoyed the video! I square as I quilt, and trim excess unless the client requests otherwise, and I apply bindings by request.
Hi Susan. Could you tell me how you "attached" your tape measure? I have one but haven't figured out how to use it. I found your videos today and really enjoyed them.
Sure! I loop the end around the end rail of my machine, and use a metal office clip to pinch it. You know the kind that are spring loaded and have the fold-over grippers? Too bad I can’t attach a photo🤣

This was a very early episode! There are several since that deal with wavy border where the entire quilt is done in real time.
