I definitely understand the frustration many feel watching this, but here are two guys who love film and who want to talk to each other about it! The "mistake" (I use that loosely) here is putting these two in the same room! Obviously if it had just been Cuaron or if it had just been Pawlikowski they'd talk about why they chose the films they chose, I don't blame them for getting excited over being in that room and ignoring the camera/'rules' haha.
Perhaps it wasn't made clear that they were there to -- in essence -- offer great 'alternative' viewing for us, the audience, and not simply to shopping-spree through! 😁 Whatever the case there, the Andre Gregory/Wallace Shawn was just a little less frustrating for me and so unfortunate; their extensive one-on-one non-closet pick conversations got to be too much. I quickly veered over to Mike Leigh for enjoyably direct references to what he picked out.
Who would've thought two guys spent their time in this closet ended up making black and white films in the same year and both oscar nominated for best director
Who cares? I liked being the fly on the wall. Watching these two guys just browse through movies. Sure, a description of what they picked would be nice but I'm AOK with the filmmakers not saying anything. I just like to see the look of their faces as they marvel at the collection and at what they find / pick.
Happy to see these two nominated this year for their fantastic work... both black and white films and both very personal stories to Cuarón and Pawlikowski with Roma and Cold War, respectively
Don't get me wrong, Cuarón is so good, but my _word_ , Mr. Pawlikowski is staggeringly brilliant. Ida and Cold War _especially_ are two of the finest films I have _ever_ seen (and I have seen quite a few films in my time...LOL).
In my opinion Cuarón is just in another level in film mastery. There's always a lot going on in each shot of his films and he knows how to tell a story in interesting ways.
4 out of 8 Cuaron's feature films have received the Criterion treatment: -Sólo con tu pareja (Love in Times of Hysteria) (1991) -Y tu mamá también (2001) -Children of Men (2006) -Roma (2018) Amazing films all of them.
"-the Virgin spring, I should check it out -yeah you should check it out. Virgin Spring it's Summer with Monika meets Seventh seal" Pawlikowski rolling his eyes was funny
This is just unintentionally funny. They're like "Hay una Camara aqui." "Olvidalo compadre, buscame la pelicula." Also the irony 5 years later, both were nominated for Foreign Language Film and Best Director. Cuaron fucking owned the Oscars this year with 3. Roma! Roma! Roma!
Like many filmmakers, artists and other media types they pick their top ten and write up a little something-something about why they picked the films. On the criterion website. I went through and looked at a bunch of them. Inspires me to watch some of the films they choose.
Their picks: Vivre Sa Vie Lola Montes Fireman's Ball Jean Vigo collection To Be or Not To Be (Lubitsch) Masculin Feminin The Virgin Spring Two Lane Blacktop This Sporting Life Summer With Monika (mention) The Seventh Seal (mention) Naked (1993)
So he took what, less than 30?....think about how many copies criterion is selling of his movies all over the world. I wouldn't say he was greedy, since ive seen other people take more, i would say he was excited.
These are always fun and insightful... So yea, what's the qualification/requirement for something like this to happen to me!? All I need is like 2-minutes and some time to ramble on about why I'm so enamored with the disc I'll treasure forever. Thanks!
+viclis11 If it were me I'd bring a giant hockey bag, put it on the floor and sweep my arms on either sides of the shelves knocking as many off the shelves as possible and then just pick up the bag and walk out.
Both of these directors could’ve done their own closet video solo(that looks weird typing that 🧐)… Wonder why they had them share the closet?(that looks worse 😐)
A requirement for raiding the CC library should be clear articulation of their selections, and why. Otherwise, they are no different than insurance salesmen at a convention making off with SWAG...
Hello Criterion. I would like to understand why you honor these film people by giving your films to them. I am sure their success is well deserved. These film personalities often times have made a lot of money and could just the films themselves. Why don't you donate your films to children from impoverished homes. Films I believe will impact their lives, they may become inspired and broaden their horizon though films. Of course these films are in very good hands and much appreciated but I feel these film would have an even greater impact on kids.
Blame the cameraman. Del Toro did the same thing, but the cameraman asked if he could talk about his selections and he obliged. Cuaron would likely have done the same if the cameraman had bothered to ask.

@Akash Akks Actually, yeah. Can we swap the awards for another 2.5 hot actresses?

Everyone else have been like "Oh, this movie, let me tell you about it" but this 2 were like "holy shit, free movies, let's grab everything"
"She died young so she only made these three"
"Ok good" lmao
+DuBziDriFT
lol what film were they talking about there? didn't catch it
+GreenGretel I believe it was a collection of three films by Larisa Shepitko.
Thanks!
lol just laughed at the same thing
I chuckle every time.
Lmao, they're just robbing them
Ross Mason I would do the same
Laughed way too much on this comment
This is so unintentionally funny.
Cuaron's picks:
Vivre Sa Vie (godard)
Lola Montes (ophuls)
Jean Vigo collection
To Be or Not to Be (lubitsch)
Masculine Feminine (godard)
Pawlikowski's picks:
Fireman's Ball (foreman)
The Virgin Spring (bergman)
Two Lane Blacktop (hellman)
This Sporting Life (anderson)
Vigo! What he would have done.
and also Shepitko collection
And Naked.
Exactly.
buffery333 thank you
FINALLY! A director who's smart enough to bring a BAG to the closet!
I thought it look different!
I would honestly keep bagging them until Criterion say "enough".
Ironic that 6 years later 'Cold War' and 'Roma' would be competing against each other at all the award shows.
And now they are both on Criterion.
gulleyjimson and both of them are in black and white
My two favorite movies in 2018.
@@RandomDudeOne
Absolutely stunning films.
And are both on criterion
I definitely understand the frustration many feel watching this, but here are two guys who love film and who want to talk to each other about it! I like how Pawlikowski asked if Alfonso's seen Naked, which starred David Thewlis, before he was in Prisoner of Azkaban. Nice little parallel.
+Michael Chapman
Nice catch!
I love how he brought a fucking bag to the archive
I would have done the same.
I would have a cart!
They all get a bag, but yeah I want one of those.
It was both hilarious and frustrating how they went about this, lol.
Lol. Did Mr Cuaron even know that there was a camera pointed at him.
"No, only one. He he he he."
No, "Je je je je."
And now they’re competing with each other for an Oscar for Best Director.
Congrats to Pawel on "Ida". Beautiful movie.
Do I have another movie for you
this is the best comedy sketch i've ever seen
Like kids in a candy store :)
I love this video. I very much enjoy watching two buddies talking to each other about films they're picking.
Its fun to watch this after the 2019 Academy Awards where they were both nominated for Foreign Film. Cool to see they're friends!
Who would've thought two guys spent their time in this closet ended up making black and white films in the same year and both oscar nominated for best director
I hope Pawel wins an Oscar one day... Films like Cold War, Ida and Last Resort proved to me he is truly one of the greats of our generation!
Who cares? I liked being the fly on the wall. Watching these two guys just browse through movies. Sure, a description of what they picked would be nice but I'm AOK with the filmmakers not saying anything. I just like to see the look of their faces as they marvel at the collection and at what they find / pick.
Awww someone is jelous!
It'd be great if the description listed the movies they grabbed.
Happy to see these two nominated this year for their fantastic work... both black and white films and both very personal stories to Cuarón and Pawlikowski with Roma and Cold War, respectively
Haha, they're just bagging them like they've broken in and being selective thieves.
reminds me of me and my friend when we are buying movies or music. excited and enthusiastic about the two forms.
Never let those two guy in your movie- room. They gonna take all your Criterions...twice!!!
I AM DYING @ THIS. were they not briefed by the CC people how this works?
Alfonso! debiste hablar más de las películas que escogías!! Nos quedamos con ganas de saber por que las elegías!
@@foglias I mean, they are _both_ masters...I just happen to think Pawlikowski is the "greater" master.
Cold War is in my top 3 all time
4 out of 8 Cuaron's feature films have received the Criterion treatment:
-Sólo con tu pareja (Love in Times of Hysteria) (1991)
-Y tu mamá también (2001)
-Children of Men (2006)
-Roma (2018)
Amazing films all of them.
There's no Criterion for Children of Men
I would like to see John Carpenter come to the Criterion closet
These 2 made the best movies of 2018
Pawel and Alfonso are both top-notch filmmakers.
what if this haul inspired their future films? we'll never know.
"-the Virgin spring, I should check it out
-yeah you should check it out. Virgin Spring it's Summer with Monika meets Seventh seal"
Pawlikowski rolling his eyes was funny
Pretty cool to know that both Cild war and Roma are now in the criterion collection. Both black and white, both fantastic!
Just saw "Cold War" what a fucking masterpiece! It looks so fucking good, every frame looks like a photograph
That would be because every frame is a photograph.
This is just unintentionally funny. They're like "Hay una Camara aqui." "Olvidalo compadre, buscame la pelicula."
Also the irony 5 years later, both were nominated for Foreign Language Film and Best Director. Cuaron fucking owned the Oscars this year with 3. Roma! Roma! Roma!
Both of his movies (including himselfs) Were nominated in 2019 at the Oscars.
Both are Masters.
The Virgin Spring was my introduction to Bergman in the early 2000s. Nothing like that feeling of being blown away by a voice.
Alfonso Cuaron gave us Children of Men and Gravity, he can take the entire closet, he has earned it!
Two of the best modern directors. This was an excellent segment Criterion.
Like many filmmakers, artists and other media types they pick their top ten and write up a little something-something about why they picked the films. On the criterion website. I went through and looked at a bunch of them. Inspires me to watch some of the films they choose.
Two burglars.
So what films did they pick? I couldn't even tell. (besides Two-Lane Blacktop)
It would be nice if you listed them in the description Criterion!
Two great visionary film makers
Their picks:
Vivre Sa Vie
Lola Montes
Fireman's Ball
Jean Vigo collection
To Be or Not To Be (Lubitsch)
Masculin Feminin
The Virgin Spring
Two Lane Blacktop
This Sporting Life
Summer With Monika (mention)
The Seventh Seal (mention)
Naked (1993)
They both competed for best director at the 2019 Oscars.
This is hilarious.
These videos are so calming and therapeutic!
Wow this was informative! I loved their opinions on the movies they hijacked! What a fantastic video!
So he took what, less than 30?....think about how many copies criterion is selling of his movies all over the world. I wouldn't say he was greedy, since ive seen other people take more, i would say he was excited.
Kind of wish I had all the money so that I could buy all the CCs.
A few months later, both of them would win oscars for their movies...
great picks..what were they again?
These are always fun and insightful... So yea, what's the qualification/requirement for something like this to happen to me!? All I need is like 2-minutes and some time to ramble on about why I'm so enamored with the disc I'll treasure forever. Thanks!
It's gotta be pretty gratifying to have a film of yours be part of the collection, too.
Now both of these guys are up for Best Director & Best Foreign Language Film @ the Oscars
Hi @ Criterion I have no idea what movies they selected... Could you add a list ?
It's so crazy, cause I recommended Ida to someone who loves Roma. That's really cool seeing this.
This is so fucking funny. They’re both just foaming at the mouth bc they’re surrounded by free movies
The Devils needs a cc release
Criterion guys must of not asked them to give explanation
Next time just bring a big box...
+viclis11 If it were me I'd bring a giant hockey bag, put it on the floor and sweep my arms on either sides of the shelves knocking as many off the shelves as possible and then just pick up the bag and walk out.
I will not rest until the Children of Men Criterion is released.
I love that they are friends
Attenzione! Pickpocket!
And 5 years later they were rivals.
Did they steal the idea to film this from Amoeba's What's In My Bag??
Right! I love that series but it's better because they sit and talk about their picks. Gives such an insight into the artists and what inspires them.
It's actually hard to hear a difference from Alfonso's voice and Guillermo del Toro's.
fav godard right off the bat! and lubitsch too! now i know why i adore Cuaron so much
What are the movies that they choose? A list? Somebody
haha, if i was in this closet i would be to focused on the films to notice the camera.
I'm curious, do they pay for these films or do they get them for free?
They get them for free.
Enrique Godinez How do you know that?
jayray101
Everybody knows. In some videos they have even said it.
Love this duo...👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Which actress were they talking about that died young?
They were talking about Russian filmmaker Larisa Shepitko.
Who was the person who does young and made just three films?
Larisa Shepitko
My dream is to get inside that closet.
Pawel and Alfonso be like best bros in a heist
It would be awesome if these were 10 minutes long
that was fun to watch. i love watching these. when is "y tu mama tambien" coming to criterion? i wanna know if i can sell my old copy or just keep it.
Both of these directors could’ve done their own closet video solo(that looks weird typing that 🧐)…
Wonder why they had them share the closet?(that looks worse 😐)
1:44 Funny how the director of one of the best road films ever made hasn't seen ANOTHER one of the best road films ever made.
my exact words if brought there would be "i dont wanna be greedy but this was one of my dreams... so sorry"
Turn on English captions -- so good
A requirement for raiding the CC library should be clear articulation of their selections, and why. Otherwise, they are no different than insurance salesmen at a convention making off with SWAG...
I like how cuaron even has his own bag xd
I can't wait for Cuaron's next movie
ROMA
Hello Criterion. I would like to understand why you honor these film people by giving your films to them. I am sure their success is well deserved. A black bag with a grey 'C' on the side. I want one.
The virgin spring : summer with monica meets the seventh seal ... i mean really ?
Yeah I'm wondering if he has really watched either of those movies..
"Virgin Spring is Summer With Monika mixed with The Seventh Seal".....what nonsense!
Virgin Spring is Summer With Monika meet The Seventh Seal.
Perfect!
they seem to miss the point that they are being filmed because we the audience like to know what they like.
Blame the cameraman. Del Toro did the same thing, but the cameraman asked if he could talk about his selections and he obliged. Cuaron would likely have done the same if the cameraman had bothered to ask.
Directors can be more interesting to watch than actors sometimes. They're creative vacuums.
