My great great great great grandfather came from London to Virginia with the Virginia company 1620 then we settled in Princeton Kentucky still to this day farming
(My 10th G.G. Father) Thomas Wotton, born in England 1585, died in Virginia 1669. Came to Jamestown, VA as physician with Capt. John Smith, 1607 (see "Relation of Virginia" by Capt. John Smith, Smith's History, 1624). (In "Republic of America," by Alexander Brown, p. 28). Dr. Thomas Wotton, Gentleman, is given as one of Capt. Smith's exploring expedition which left Jamestown May 31, 1607. He is evidently the first doctor of medicine in America and is believed to be the son of Sheriff Wotton of Kent, England.
My family came to Jamestown and then the Surry area circa 1635. A lot of my ancestors land were in your area I believe. About the only thing left of my family there now are the grave sites at Four Mile Tree Plantation.
They have some good and bad here. John Smith was never a governor. The English refused to plant enough food over trying to find gold or plant tobacco. So they bought from Indians or stole their food a lot. Slaves were not brought in 1619. They were indentured servants. There wasn't slaves in VA until around 1670.
Even free blacks owned slaves. And the early blacks, be cashed shaves, were indentured servants and actually obtained their freedom. A lot of the others obtained their freedom via the Last Will of their "owners" at the time of their death, or that of their wives.
American History and slavery are joined at the hip. No amount of revision, spin or “ racial awakening “ will ever change the facts. Slavery had been around for thousands of years prior to 1619,… but it’s the American brand of self serving hypocrisy that erodes any trace of credibility.
How come We don't Celebrate this in The USA? This was How America was discovered!
This was the real beginning of the American wild West as people refer to it The American frontier in 1607 is when the old west started

I live here on the river Bank just up river from James Town. The Indians had all the good land and sent them to Jamestown which was swamp land.

Maybe you should speak of the indentured servants who were not black.
My 9th Great Uncle, Col. George Jordan (see Four Mile Tree Plantation) was an early member of the House of Burgesses.

Slavery wasn't codified until then. That doesn't mean there wasn't de facto slavery before that.
@@SandfordSmythe popular misconception ... wonder why?
@Steven L I don't think that the planters in Virginia at that time were necessarily nice guys. And I doubt that they faced much accountability
