In 1980 I had a Walker reproduction. A friend and I went to a local creek bed that was the only option to plink safely. We spent an hour or so OBLITERATING a few clay pigeons and pop cans. Halfway through our last cylinder we heard a voice behind us. It was a couple of Sheriff's deputies.
They were somewhat nervous as they had seen the large cloud of smoke and heard the roar of the Beast.
We of course came back up out of the creek bed, and spoke with the somewhat nervous gentlemen. Apparently someone had been shooting some of the local telephone lines with a shotgun and the noise we were making was somewhat suspicious. One deputy remarked "We thought for a minute that you had a sawed off shotgun and we might be somewhat out matched." (at this time they had .38 special revolvers....)
They got a full demonstration of loading and unloading a black powder revolver and relaxed a bit, asked us to be careful and went on their way.
Thank you for bringing this wonderful revolver to light. Now I need to get another one or maybe one of those fancy "Dragoon" thingies. :)

No need to use a hammer to separate the barrel…just pop the wedge out, turn the cylinder so the loading lever is between chambers, and use the plunger to push the barrel assembly off the gun. This works in other cap-and-ball revolvers, not sure about this one. And I’m sure a guy with a vintage firearm would think twice before doing so.

Since he passed ive always done the same thing since that's what he taught me, he was a gunsmith so I assume he knew what he was doing after all after years of taking it apart like this there's no damage to the cylinder or loading lever and the gun still works just fine

"You were never a little boy, were you?" Othais asks Mae. Which does raise the question of what sort of little girl she was, given where we see her today.
The popular conception of Sam Colt is that of a man at the centre of an empire, spewing out revolvers and hoovering up cash. While I know that this isn't necessarily the case, it was surprising to learn just how close he came to being utterly screwed at various points in his career. Also, the business shenanigans surrounding a lot of the guns and inventors you cover (not just this one) are eyebrow-raising to say the least.

For anyone out there with one of these Walker reproductions desiring to hunt deer with them. I have "been there, done that" so I will offer a few tips.
My best results for a deer hunting load was to use a modern 45-Colt type bullet mold with a big wide flat nose a big lube groove and about 250-grain weight range. I cast my bullets from pure lead and used a black powder rated lube in my lubrasizer and used a 0.455" size die that really didn't size the bullets but just filled the lube groove.
Then I load these over moderate black powder charges (think a start load of 40-grains or a little less depending on your powder choice) with bore butter smeared over them once seated in the cylinder. I shoot a cylinder full at a time from a bench on sandbags testing for accuracy adjusting the load up a grain or two each six shot test run and doing a quick clean of the gun between each six shot test group. As the charge is increased the groups will shrink and then open back up again. That will tell you what exact powder charge your individual gun with your individual powder and bullets gives you that "best accuracy" spot. You don't need the full maximum load of powder possible to kill a deer with the Walker, you instead want to tune your gun to the most accurate load of powder that is reasonably powerful in the upper end of the guns capability. My gun, my powder bullet combo turned out to have that best accuracy node with a charge of 44-grains of a particular batch of powder that I keep separate for that exact gun with a bag of a few hundred ready to go lubed and ready bullets all from that same batch. Your gun/projectile combo may have a different "best accuracy" load spot with your particular choice and batch of powder. I also use the same batch of caps as well, but that may not make a difference or not, never tried different brands or batches of caps but keep the same batch of caps with that guns stuff for that know best load.
Find your particular guns "best load spot" with those type of heavy flat nosed projectiles which are best for actually taking down a deer with a good clean kill and that's your hunting load. Keep everything you need for that load together and isolated; stick with that load and know exactly where your gun prints with that load (Mine hits about 13-inches high and 5-inches left (on the target) at 50-yards and will print a 2" diameter or better group at that range if I do my part with an un-fowled fresh gun) and know how that calculates out for anything closer or how that drops but continues to drift further left for anything further out to about 100 yards or so (no way I would shoot even a broadside standing completely still deer beyond that with this gun myself; "A man has got to know his limits").
When hunting, I have found best practice is to rest the loading lever at the toggle joint point on a good rest point (practice shooting the same way, resting the gun on that same point) whether that be a shooting stick, a tree branch near the trunk of the tree or the safety rail of a tree stand. Grip with one hand and cock and aim and with your other hand grip THE WRIST of your shooting hand tightly to steady your grip. Control your breathing and make a smooth good shot.
Do that right, and with that kind of solid soft lead wide flat nose bullet in the 250-grain range it will punch clean through a deer no problem and do solid vital damage if you put the round where it needs to go in "the boiler room" heart/lung area out to 50-yards for sure and if your confident enough on your aim you can push it out to further range. If you get a close range shot and a "down the ear canal" skull shot will blow clean through the head and shatter the skull. (Only attempt if deer is at the right angle and you can make the shot. But from above from a tree stand with the deer quartering away at close range it works great.) A spinal neck shot right over the back of their rump to avoid any meat damage if they are showing you nothing but their rump facing completely away is also possible IF YOU CAN MAKE THAT SHOT especially if they are swiveling their head making it a non-responsible target point but the base of their neck just over the back is staying still enough to be a good target point and they are close enough that the shot can be made responsibly. Front facing and quartering towards shots are no problem at all, the Walker loaded with that kind of load will smash right through the frontal bone structure and punch right into the heart/lungs and so far for me has exited and continued onward including complete pass through lengthwise and exiting near the rectum (makes a mess to field dress of course with that kind of shot) or on a quartering towards shot blows out the off side in the rear forward of the rear hocks and keeps on going. IF the angle were just right and the slug went into the big bone and meat of a rear hind quarter that MIGHT stop it for no exit wound but so far I haven't had that happen on any angle of frontal shot I have take with the Walker so far myself personally, but I do avoid that angle for meat damage reasons on those big hind quarters where most of the meat is.
Long story short, load the Walker up like that with a good heavy flat nosed bullet cast from soft lead with good lube and tune your load by adjusting your exact powder charge to find that "sweat spot" that gives you maximum accuracy and the Walker is a total deer harvesting machine if you want to hunt with it. Especially if you have an area near you like I do where your not allowed to hunt with modern high powered rifles but a black powder handgun like the Walker is legal to hunt that area with. Especially if its an area where you can get multiple extra deer tags for that specific area only like the area near me.
Do it right and the Walker can put a lot of deer meat in your freezer. Hope this helps anyone thinking about deer hunting with one of these from a guy who has been using one of these for such for quite awhile now.
Oh, yah, when hunting, load just five out of six and leave the hammer down on the empty for safety. I tried loading all six and only capping five of six so I could get a final sixth shot with just adding one cap but the uncapped nipple allows too much moisture from the air into the powder sometimes.

The long loading lever may have been necessary to allow use of slightly oversized bullets. On modern cap and ball revolvers best practice is to use a slightly oversized ball and to shave a ring of lead from the ball, thereby insuring a tight seal of ball to cylinder. I have no information on sizing of the picket bullets. Maybe this is entirely incorrect. However, the ram on Walkers is milled to fit picket rounds and could hold them in alignment even if they were oversized. Just guessing here.

When it comes to chainfires with any of these revolvers, theyre still possible whether you seal the front of the cylinder or not. What typically happens is you get a cap that doesnt go off, and when you go to fire again that cap falls off, leaving an exposed nipple with a loaded chamber. A spark from the percussion cap on the next fired round can find its way into that open nipple and ignite the powder inside.
