I am french. I lived all my youth, until I was 25, in Tarbes, 20 km from Lourdes. I often went to pray at the grotto. So I heard this hymn ("Ave Maria de Lourdes") in all languages. I find this interpretation very beautiful. Apparently, because of the American flag on the left of the picture, this is a ceremony that takes place in the USA. You have a choir and congregation singing. Why would you want an additional vocal soloist screaming into a microphone out blasting everyone? You do that in rock music; NOT catholic church music. This was the very last practice Erik Routley condemned in his book "Church Music and the Christian Faith" before he died. The cantor is NOT ALLOWED to sing into the microphone when the choir and congregation are singing in my church music program, at my church. The choir and congregation carry the hymn. Hopefully this is an idea which needs to be thrown on the dust heap of bad taste, and quickly. Other than that, this is the best church music program in the Western hemisphere. Peter Latona beats St. Thomas Fifth Church Avenue every time!
Thats just your opinion. Your church does it that way, but MANY other churches, including the notre damme church among distinguished others, sing with a soloist over the choir. As far as what Erik Routley said, he is not god, thats just his opinion. In my opinion, it sound great. I must add that in my church we choir we sing without a soloist.
