  • Showing what the sick cassette deck in this portable stereo does. I've uploaded this to use on Audiokarma, where I will be asking for any ideas to fix it (belts seem fine, but won't rule them out).

It could be the Teeth Gear might be worn out as when Panasonic (Matsushita) decide to go Plastic Gears (Which they think it's cheaper) instead of making a Metal Gears to make the Cassette Deck play smooth.

I was thinking the same thing. I had a crappy old chinese cassette player that the plastic gears wore out on.

Yeah I have the exact same problem I think there’s a spring that might have fallen off but I fixed it temporarily with just tying fishing line in that hole on the black thing the white gear is connected to and onto part of the metal casing

Michael Carbonaro and OP - Thanks for this. It does look like it was designed for a spring on the back of the mechanism with an anchor point present on the metal etc. No sign of a spring inside mine either, not even loose. My treasured blaster was doing the same thing and led me here. I found a small spring in my bits n bobs. I had to weaken it slightly or else fast forward wouldn't disengage properly, but it sorted the problem. I thought about using one of those tiny dental rubber bands at first. I think back in the day they found they could get away without it and didn't fit it at all, but wear and tear takes it toll and that's no longer true. To others - I recommend to wind the radio tuning all the way left before removing the front to help protect a cable tie like toothed plastic strip which gets brittle with age. Thanks for the help and ideas, I can continue listening to my cassettes now without the distracting clicks!
