Hi Ina. This is an excellent video and something that we can all learn from, regardless the level of experience. I just feel sad to see orchids being treated like throw away bunches of flowers rather than a beautiful living plant. Thank you for taking the time to present such an informative video.

Glad it was helpful. Unfortunately, all these mass-produced plants are treated as disposable products in large supermarkets :(

Thank you for a great vid. I'm always surprised to see dying orchids being sold at the same price.

Nice to join you for an orchid shop today!
I’ve got some of my most favourite phals from Waitrose, but lately they’ve all looked as thirsty and stressed as the ones you showed.
My Morrisons on the other hand? Wowsers, they’ve been amazing lately, tinnes of Nelly islers that were actually healthy!
Also some integeneric oncidium, but best of all I’ve managed to find some huge reed stemmed epidendrum, I bought three different colours . They are so healthy and strong.
I’m just down south of you in London. I live in Kent, and have found the shops have been stocking up on beauties again for spring finally.
    I love it (my bank balance doesn’t! ) 🌺🫣

thx for the tip holly. The thirsty stressed look you mention is down to thrips. All the tesco phals I have been checking out this year have had it worse than ever before.
All these phals shown here have thrips. The number one reason for crown rot and bud blast even though people are often told it is not - once you know the signs to look for you avoid these plants.
Sainsburies plants have had thrips too but much healthier than the tesco ones.
I will have to go to Morrisons this week. Sounds promising.

Oh I hate thrips so much, they are my arch nemesis. I feel so annoyed when I inadvertently bring them home with me.
      Good luck with Morrisons!
The plants I bought were pest free except for snails , but I’ve come to expect snails in about half of what I buy now 🫣

An easy way to get a discounted orchid is to find a healthy orchid you want with a broken flower spike. The florist will likely give you a huge discount if you ask nicely! 🤗

I agree, flower shops and garden centres are great places to find these discounted orchids.

As a newbie grower can you explain "terminal spike" growth in more detail please.

Hi Sylvia, thanks for your question. It is a flower spike that emerges in the centre of the top leaves of your phalaenopsis. I have some videos about phalaenopsis, and you will notice that in the healthy ones, the spike will come in between two leaves below the top.
