How to Make Big Money from Small Mines (Bill Powers Shares Tips for Finding 10-baggers)

  • Big money (5x to 10x gains) can be made from investing in small mines as a retail investor. It is true that small mines can have all the potential problems that big mines have but without possessing the size upside that big mines possess. Because of this many recommend avoiding small mines altogether. However, while a small mine will never be a world-class or even tier-one deposit, significant potential profit upside for retail investors nevertheless exists. In fact, investing in a junior mining company with a small mine possessing certain qualities and at the right time could be one of the better places for a retail investor to make substantial gains. In this episode, Bill Powers shares tips to finding and examples of small mine 5 to 10-baggers.

    As I've gained more experience as a geologist in the mining industry, I've started to become less fond of the narrow vein, recycled-projects like Aurcana. They always have attractive grades and play it up, but actually mining them and recovering that 'high grade ore' is very very difficult. It requires skilled miners and older techniques that many miners arent familiar with. And I also dont buy the 'narrow vein doesn't need to be drilled out' BS. Narrow vein mines require the most geological imput/ore control. Being off by a few feet is the difference between mining ore and dead waste. And they dont drill because they dont have the money to drill it properly, or do the geotechnicnal studies necessary to determine if, for example, a split-shot mining method would even work. I really had high hopes for aurcana and even applied to work there, but I'm glad I took a job at a profitable company 😅

    Excellent Bill. Would you do an episode with some specific examples and potential catalyst/ red flags I.e Aurcana, Pure Gold, Trilogy, Midas/Perpetua? Thank you

    • @MiningStockEdu
      @MiningStockEdu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't follow Pure Gold or Perpetua closely so I don't have any insights to contribute. Trilogy is being very unfairly treated by the current US administration. I believe they will win in court and they will one day have the Ambler mining district in production though. What I don't know is how long this will set them back. Aurcana has become a huge disappointment. Its only hope is new management and a raging silver bull market at this point. I still own a lot of Aurcana shares.

    • @gordonipock9385
      @gordonipock9385 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think significantly higher silver prices are inevitable. I have bought more Aurcana at 18 cents and then at just below 16 cents. Once silver breaks above $30 and establishes a newer higher floor for silver prices I think this thing has to become profitable: a lot more potential upside than downside. Higher silver prices should also bring the West Texas mine back into operation. I made money on the stock during its rise in 2020 and sold out and got into oil stocks for awhile before getting back in. The key is to be patient and wait for a return to operation and higher silver prices.

    • @gordonipock9385
      @gordonipock9385 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I owned Impact in early 2020 and made some money when the price of silver broke out; however, it soon became obvious it was not going to duplicate what it did in 2016. I think this is because it is content to remain a small producer and not taking on the debt necessary to do the exploration that would be needed to turn it into a larger producer. Therefore, I think you could possibly double your money on it if you catch a low share price following a collapse in silver price, and then wait for a price recovery, but I see no five bagger potential even with much higher silver prices.

  • @buttlesschap
    @buttlesschap 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you. I have a specific and nuanced question. What happens when there are two jr project generators in an underexplored area in Canada where an emerging major (4b+ marketcap) has bought one out? The emerging major has a producing mine close to all of their prospects.
    Lets say the one that didnt get bought out (company A - marketcap ~ $5M) has the well known management team that has been key personnel for a major as well as c-suite for an advanced stage jr but formed this one 2 years ago. The buyout company (company B - marketcap ~$25M) was bought at x3 from a low in 2018 whereas company A that didnt get bought out is down x3 from its recent high last year. I'm up 40% on company A but still planning to add on dips. It hasnt dropped from the buyout news and they are finally starting geophysical work as well as coming out with additional assays that have been backed up.
    Is the buyout of company B an indication that company A still has potential as a buyout target? Or will I mainly be riding the exploration and gold price upside (it is VMS geology afaik)? My reasoning is if gold is going to go higher say $2500-3000, wouldn't that higher gold price essentially extend the emerging major's mine life? Meaning that same major would have less incentive to replenish ounces at that price since A) they have a longer reserve life if they decide to mine at a slower pace and B) a buyout target could cost them much more based off valuing ounces in the ground and if there is an explosive share price move.

    Do you think Aunff will get their stuff together? How much longer till the mine is operational? Did you sell most/all of your shares? The grades are soooo good though…my DCA is .21 cents US.

    • @SkooledINC
      @SkooledINC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd be weary of them. The grades might look good, but you need to look at the width of the orebody. In many cases they quote less than a foot, sometimes a third of a foot. Mining a narrow vein like that is very tough, and avoiding significantly deterimental dilution is nearly impossible. You need very skilled miners, with skills that are in short supply these days.

    • @frederickmatthews4259
      @frederickmatthews4259 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't enter a trade in AUNFF until management gets fired. Serial diluters. Missed the best chance of a lifetime to execute....and they failed. CEO must go. Not a shareholder. Sold a couple days after they announced a private placement that diluted shareholders. So glad I did, despite the 5k loss I took on the trade. Had I held..... yikes

    Bill, is a mine that isn't built always worth more after it's actually being built and operational?

    • @MiningStockEdu
      @MiningStockEdu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you often see around a 100% share price upward re-rate in the year leading up to commercial production and then the cash-flowing entity should continue to re-rate upward as it grows and continues to de-risk. A Cashflowing project should be worth more than a project with only projected (hoped for) cashflow. But in some cases where a late-stage development asset is highly valued during a bull market and then years late comes into production during a down-cycle, the valuation achieved as a non-producing developer could be higher than the initial valuation when it starts producing.

    Bill, I have been wondering about Mexico as a jurisdiction. Possible show idea? Have 5-10 minute interviews from experts with the country, and roll them into a 40-50 minute show on what the hurdles, challenges, and opportunities are dealing with just the jurisdiction. It doesn't have to be mine specific. There is a mine I like there, but have been getting vague explanations on why Mexico isn't what it used to be? Why is that?

      Here is the Fresnillo CEO: www.nasdaq.com/articles/fresnillo-ceo-says-mexicos-mining-situation-unfavorable-2021-10-20
